Psalms 82:7

But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.

Those given the title gods in the preceding line are mortal and will die like all other human beings. Their end is the common death of humanity, with no exemption granted by the exalted name laid upon them. They fall from their standing even as rulers fall, like one of the princes brought down. Since the name God can thus be applied to dying men, being called God does not by itself prove essential divine nature.

The same mortality rebukes proud persons who claim high status for themselves while denying God. Neither worldly wealth nor self-regarded wisdom can save such boasters from dying as ordinary human beings.
