Psalms 82:8

Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.

The name God in this psalm is bestowed on mortal men, so it is no unreasonable thing for the Son to be called by the name of the Father. The call for God to arise to judge the earth and inherit all nations points to a judgment still to come, bound up with the future victory of Jesus over His enemies.

Though the world is already His by right of creation, it becomes Christ's inheritance by right of redemption. Sin had made the earth forfeited and worthy of destruction, and Christ died to restore God's authority over it in a way that brought no dishonor upon His government. The very earth on which Christ suffered is included in His purchased possession secured under the everlasting covenant, and His throne is to be set up there forever, because it is consecrated to enduring existence and is not appointed to be blotted out. Having waited until His enemies are made His footstool, He will then exercise dominion upon earth and sit upon the throne of David.
