Psalms 83:4

They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.

The confederate boast to cut off God's people from nationhood points to the invasion of Judah in Jehoshaphat's time by the children of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir. Those same peoples had been spared by Israel when Israel came out of Egypt, yet they repaid that mercy by marching to cast Judah out of the possession God had given Israel to inherit. Their purpose was to destroy the nation utterly and to erase the name of Israel from remembrance.

The extremity of that danger drove God's people to prayer that He would confuse their enemies, so that Jehovah's own name would be glorified in their deliverance.
