Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.
The verse describes the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh bringing grace and truth. In that coming mercy and truth meet together in Him and righteousness and peace kiss each other and are united in Him. Truth springs out of the earth and righteousness looks down from heaven, and the Lord gives that which is good so that the land yields her increase. Righteousness goes before Him as His forerunner. That forerunning righteousness sets people in the way of His steps so that they walk where He walks.
Righteousness goes before those who serve God and guides their way. Truth also goes before them with righteousness, while the glory of the Lord follows behind them. Those who are thus led and guarded receive the righteousness of Christ for themselves.
