Psalms 86:3

Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.

The prayer is a servant's cry to his Lord for mercy, repeated and continued day by day. It is joined to lifting the soul to God. He to whom it is lifted is good and ready to forgive, and rich in mercy toward all who call upon him.

It is the sinner's plea for pardon, for transgressors stand in need of pardon and God alone can grant it. It therefore belongs to the humble and needy as a prayer they may offer with confidence. They may do so because God invites them to seek mercy, because he listens to them, and because he is merciful.
