Psalms 88:7

Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah.

The verse speaks of God's wrath lying hard and heavy upon the sufferer, pressing him down with a felt weight he cannot lift. The affliction that accompanies it overwhelms him like waves, pictured as breakers sent by God Himself rolling over him until he is submerged in trouble. In its fullest depth this reveals what Christ entered when He took the sins of the whole world upon Himself, for the wrath of God against sin then overwhelmed Him like mighty waves. In His case it was the Father's displeasure resting upon Him as sin-bearer, with the withdrawal of the expressed love and approval He had ever known while He stood in the sinner's place.
