Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.
When His people forsake His law and disobey and break His commandments, He disciplines them, yet He does not utterly or completely withdraw His lovingkindness from them nor suffer His faithfulness to fail. Even when they are given into captivity and their glory is given into the hands of enemies, that loving-kindness is not taken away completely and that faithfulness does not fail.
The same holds for erring and unfaithful ones even while they suffer and bear the consequences of their sin, as was seen when mercy continued with David while he bore the consequences of his sin. Affliction and judgment under such discipline are meant to correct and purify, not to destroy. Trials are meant to refine and purify, to lead to repentance and renewed obedience and to teach His love, and not to drive to despair. For even when disobedient and undeserving and in need of correction, He remains gracious, giving grace and comfort in their need.
