Psalms 89:34

My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

God will not break His covenant nor change what He has spoken, for His counsel and character are unchanging. Applied to His law, this means the law stands forever without alteration or revision, as the expression of His character and eternal truth and the test by which character is judged. It cannot be softened to accommodate human weakness and sin; instead God gave His Son to come in human nature, overcome sin and live the law, so that those who share His divine nature may live it. For this reason the seventh-day Sabbath He blessed, made holy and gave to humanity cannot be changed by man, and He has not authorized Sunday in its place. His promises are therefore utterly reliable and are made sure in Jesus, whose life, death and heavenly mediation as Advocate and High Priest secure adoption, presence, supply of every need and everlasting life to those who trust and obey Him.

God's Word Never Changes

God will not break His covenant nor alter what has gone out of His lips, and His counsel is unchanging. His requirements from beginning to end set forth eternal truth, His law is the test of character, and He is truth who will not alter what has gone out of His mouth. Because He faithfully keeps His covenant and does not change what He has promised and spoken, His word can always be relied upon.

His purposes cannot be thwarted. His infinite understanding cannot err nor be perplexed about how, by whom, or through what means to carry them out. His goodness and truth are eternal, and He honors those who walk humbly with Him. His declarations are immutable, eternal truths reflecting His unchanging character. Any alteration would imply that His word was faulty, and in the future Satan will have to confess that his charges against God were unjust and that God cannot alter His word.

His spoken will is absolute and cannot rightly be altered or questioned. It gives safe guidance for life and is to be obeyed, not questioned. Though He is merciful, compassionate, and loving, He does not change what He has spoken to accommodate human perversity. His human agents are to serve as channels of light, walking in pure light and leading others to Him.

Law Stands Forever

Applied to God's law, Psalm 89:34 means the law cannot be changed or altered, for it expresses God's character and eternal truth and stands as the test of character. To revise it as if imperfect would imply God is changeable and imperfect and would require His ceasing to be supreme. Human beings cannot bend it to fit their ideas, and when they refuse to bring their lives into harmony with it they break its commands. God's people are therefore called to declare that it has not been changed and remains binding.

Neither Satan's failure to alter it nor efforts by the world and church to make it void change it, and it is not an imperfect rule needing revision. To change it would imply that God is changeable and imperfect. The law cannot be altered to accommodate human weakness and sin, though sin has weakened humanity's ability to obey. Instead God gave His Son rather than leaving people to bear sin's penalty, and Christ came in human nature with power to overcome sin and live God's law, so that those who share His divine nature may live in obedience to it.

The law therefore remains in force, for Christ said He came not to destroy the law or the prophets and that not even the smallest mark would pass from the law before all was fulfilled. This stands in contrast to the Roman power's attempt to change God's times and laws. Errors and teachings contrary to Scripture gain no authority merely by lasting through the centuries, even when old and handed down, if they lack the support of God's word. God's word remains unchanged and authoritative, and His later message in the last days reveals His law and truth and makes truth known.

God placed His holiness and sanctity on the seventh day and gave it to humanity to keep holy, having rested on it, made it holy, and appointed it to be kept through a thousand generations. His promise and declaration to make the seventh day holy remains firm as an unaltered obligation, so people cannot change the institution God established. God has not authorized Sunday as the Sabbath, and His commandment remains as given, including the fourth commandment. His word that the seventh day is holy remains unchanged, and obedience to His commandments upholds His honor on earth. His covenant promise assures His commandment-keeping people that He will be with them and that they will have everlasting life.

His word stands forever, as unalterable as His throne, and His word and law remain unchangeable. The covenant, plainly written by His own finger, will be brought forward and presented in heaven's courts and at the judgment as the standard by which the world is judged and sentenced and every case is decided. Human judgment is not the standard; God's word, not human judgment, will judge them. Obedience brings and receives life, while transgression brings and receives death. Opposing God means leaving the only path to holiness, happiness, and heaven.

Promises Surely Kept

God does not break or change His covenant, and His promises to those who love Him stand firm forever. That includes His promises to His people and to the church, which remain sure and unalterable. They are sure because His power is absolute, so He can remove every obstacle to His work.

His promises are made certain in Jesus Christ and never fail. Jesus represents humanity and lives in heaven as its Advocate and High Priest, and His mediation secures what God has promised for those who trust Him. By faith in that mediation believers receive all that the promise secures, for in giving Jesus to the world God gave all heaven and secured adoption into His family. His covenant promise also assures His commandment-keeping people of His presence and everlasting life, for His commandment remains as given, including the fourth commandment, and He has not authorized Sunday as the Sabbath.

His word pledges to supply every need of His children, and He keeps His covenant without changing what He has promised. That pledge rests on His faithfulness, power, wisdom, and perfect understanding. His honor is bound to fulfill it, and His power and wisdom ensure that no obstacle can prevent Him from doing so.
