Psalms 89:49

Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth?

The verse is a sorrowful cry asking where God's former mercies have gone, recalling what He swore to David in faithfulness. The David named is Christ, the Son of David whose kingdom endures forever, and the swearing shows God's steadfast fidelity in keeping covenant with His children. The psalm is a prophecy of Christ and His glorious reign, whose covenant with David stands fast in Him and whose deliverance is joined to His triumph in the resurrection. It voices the strain of waiting for the promised Son of David amid seeming long delay, while servants bear reproach and outsiders taunt that the promise has failed though it has not yet been declared fulfilled. That promise of the kingdom sworn to David is fulfilled when Christ sits as King on the throne of God's kingdom on earth, and it stands as comfort and assurance of deliverance from persecutors.

Setting and Wording

The psalm belongs among the songs of affliction and distress sung by the Hebrew captives during the Babylonian captivity, especially its latter period. It is mingled with encouragement and assurance of divine help and eventual deliverance from persecutors. Within that setting the verse is a sorrowful appeal asking where the former lovingkindnesses once shown are. It recalls the sworn promise made to David.

It expresses the strain of waiting for the son of David whose kingdom was promised to endure forever. The coming of the promised Messiah appeared long delayed, and outsiders taunted that the promise had failed. Even while God's servants bore reproach from enemies, the promise had not been declared fulfilled. The appeal asks God to remember the loving-kindnesses promised to David in faithfulness amid that apparent delay.

The phrase about swearing to David in truth means in steadfastness and fidelity. It shows God's steadfastness and faithfulness in keeping covenant with His children. The David named is David II, Christ, the Son of David who is to reign on David's throne and whose kingdom endures forever.

Prophecy of Christ's Kingdom

The psalm is emphatically a prophecy of Christ and his glorious reign, foretelling David and his greater Son Jesus Christ. It is David's prophetic song of deliverance, linked to Christ's triumph in the resurrection. It shows God's covenant with David standing fast with Christ. The appeal for the former lovingkindnesses sworn to David belongs to the sworn promise of the kingdom, to be fulfilled when Christ sits as King on the throne of the kingdom of God on earth, the fifth universal kingdom.

The psalm states the promise of a kingdom to Jacob's descendants as conditional, forfeited under the old covenant and regained only through an interest in Jesus, who is now Prince and will soon be crowned King. Those who hold a future return of the literal Jews with a connected earthly view of Christ's reign and the saints' inheritance appeal to this psalm, against the teaching that the saints are taken to heaven at the second coming when the earth is desolated. It belongs to the Bible's treasure of comfort and consolation for God's children.
