But the LORD shall endure for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment.
The Lord abides without end and has established his throne for the purpose of judgment, from which he judges the world in righteousness and the peoples with uprightness. The word translated forever is the Hebrew goh-lahm, and in this place it signifies duration without end, or eternity. In other places the same word is confined to the span of a person's lifetime or to only a few days, yet here it bears an endless sense because it describes the immortal God. The length conveyed by forever is therefore determined by the nature and circumstances of that to which it is applied.
That throne prepared for judgment was made ready from the beginning, before creation, and it is the place of the sanctuary. The sanctuary itself continues forever, and after humanity sinned its services were taken up for human redemption. Thus the eternal throne and sanctuary are bound together with the work of Christ for salvation. By contrast the wicked do not endure forever, for their names and memorials are destroyed. Their end is a complete destruction, which is the second death.
