Jagged Mountain Peak Under Storm Clouds and Sunbeamsby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 90:2

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

Before the mountains rose and the earth and world were shaped, God already was, and His life is not measured or bounded by creation or by time. From everlasting to everlasting means He has no beginning and no end, always existing in the past, present, and forever, in greatness too vast to fully describe. He is eternal, self-existent and unchanging, the infinite One without variableness or shadow of turning. That unending life stands in contrast to brief, frail human life, calling people to number their days and seek His wisdom, mercy and help. As the source of all being and fountain of all law whose throne and kingdom have no end, He is made known in Christ who was one with the Father before creation, and He is an unerring Guide whose revealed Word endures forever and is worthy of full trust.

Eternal God Before Creation

Before the mountains were brought forth, and before the earth and the world were formed, God already existed as God, and His existence is not bounded by creation or by time. He lived forever before those things came to be, even before He purposed to create the world. From everlasting to everlasting He remains God.

From everlasting to everlasting means He is God without beginning or end. He always has been, He exists now, and He will exist forever as the Eternal One. His eternal greatness cannot be fully described.

He is eternal and self-existent, the infinite One. His existence and perfection have no beginning and no change. He does not change, with no variableness or shadow of turning, remaining unchanging from everlasting to everlasting.

His unending existence stands in contrast to human life, which is brief and frail. In that setting people are called to number their days. They are called to seek His wisdom, mercy, and help.

Divine Nature and Reign

Before the earth and the world were formed He already was God from everlasting to everlasting, the source of all being and the fountain of all law who presides over the judgment. His throne is everlasting, for as the Maker and Arbiter of all destinies His glory is eternal and His kingdom will have no end.

He is the High and Holy One who inhabits eternity, whose nature is love made known in His holy law and whose ways run from everlasting to everlasting. The same eternity belongs to Christ before the mountains were brought forth and the earth and the world were formed, for from everlasting to everlasting He was one with the Father in divine, original glory, and His coming into the world was purposed as light from God.

Knowing and Trusting Eternity

God is God, and His ways and works lie beyond human understanding, so He cannot be discovered by speculation, and human beings can know only what He has revealed in His Word and in the life of His Son. His person and presence cannot be fully comprehended and His ways cannot be found out by finite minds. What He has revealed in Scripture may be discussed, but speculation about His person and presence goes beyond what people can know.

He existed before the mountains were brought forth and before the earth and the world were formed, and He remains God from everlasting to everlasting. He is eternal and unchanging, the infinite One whom finite people are to seek to know and whose character they are to follow. That seeking does not mean prying into what is unrevealed, for while revelation invites study, His person and presence remain beyond full comprehension.

As the Almighty existing from everlasting to everlasting, He is an unerring Guide worthy of trust in times of difficulty. His wisdom and His revealed Word are therefore the sure counsel to follow when difficulties arise, rather than human wisdom or deceptive teachings. To trust Him is to rest on One who was God before the earth and world were formed and is God from everlasting.

His from everlasting to everlasting character belongs also to His Word, which is enduring and unchangeable. Unlike differing human opinions, which shift and conflict, His Word stands firm because it shares His eternal nature.

He is love, and His nature is made known in His holy law, as the High and Holy One who inhabits eternity and whose ways run from everlasting to everlasting. He does not change, with no variableness or shadow of turning, and this unchanging eternal nature is reason to rejoice. Christ is from everlasting to everlasting, a present help to all who seek Him diligently, with the promise that those who seek Him diligently will find Him.
