Psalms 91:10

There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

There shall no evil befall those who make the Most High their dwelling and the Lord their refuge and trust in Him, and no plague shall come near their home. It is a prophecy concerning Christ and all who believe in Him, that angels guard them in all their ways and shelter them under His wings against the assaults of Satan. In the greatest peril of the church and during the last plagues, while the saints are still mortal on earth and exposed to danger, God protects them through His angels so that no plague comes near their dwellings while the wicked perish around them. This guarding does not mean freedom from suffering, for the faithful may endure anguish, persecution, hunger and want, yet angels stand watch over every soul, supply their needs, and no enemy can take a life beyond what God permits. As Noah was preserved in the ark, those who make the Lord their refuge pass unharmed through pestilence, tempest, earthquake and the convulsions that destroy the wicked before Christ's return.

Promise and Its Conditions

No harm will overtake those who make the Most High their dwelling place and take God as their refuge and trust, and no plague will approach their home. This keeping from evil and from plague coming near the dwelling belongs to those who make the Lord their refuge and the Most High their home. It is a shield thrown around His commandment-keeping people.

The assurance is a prophecy concerning Christ, the Author of salvation, and concerning all who believe in Him. Believers are thereby assured of God's protection and of the watchful care and ministry of angels on their behalf. Heavenly angels give protection and guidance, shielding people from evil and working against the assaults of Satan and his angels. In the day of trouble and distress that comes upon the wicked, the righteous trust God as their refuge, find shelter under His wings, and are guarded by His angels in all their ways.

The same making of the Most High his habitation is seen in David, who trusted in God even though he departed from righteousness and was rebuked and punished. When he became penitent and humble, God forgave him and brought him into covenant relation with Himself. Those who rest in Jesus are in this way sheltered and protected from evil. Under God's wings they find refuge and comfort in sorrow, and their souls abide safely forever.

Protection in Time of Trouble

The verse assures God's church of deliverance in its greatest peril, when enemies gather against it and seek its ruin, so that evil will not ultimately overcome those who make the Lord their refuge and dwelling and calamity will not destroy their home. During the last plagues, while the saints are still mortal on earth and exposed to danger, God protects them through the care of His angels so that no plague comes near their dwellings, while many perish and the wicked are cut off around them. In the time of trouble God preserves His people from perishing amid famine, pestilence, and danger; they may suffer persecution, distress, privation, want of food, and hunger, but angels shield them, supply their needs, and satisfy them while the wicked die from hunger and pestilence. This guarding from destruction does not mean freedom from suffering or from appearing about to die: in the time of trouble the faithful endure anguish while enemies threaten them, yet angels stand watch over every soul, no enemy can take a life beyond what God permits, and swords raised against some are made powerless.

As Noah was preserved in the ark, those who make the Lord their refuge and defense will be kept safe amid the destruction, calamities, terrible convulsions, eruptions, and upheavals preceding Christ's return that destroy the wicked. God's people pass unharmed through pestilence, tempest, storms, and earthquakes that overtake the world; God is a safe pavilion and shelter to His people, though He is a devouring fire to those who break His law. When God comes to end wickedness, those who choose the Lord as Redeemer, abide in His presence, and walk humbly before Him as sincere, upright, pure, and trusting people remain secure under His protecting care and everlasting covenant of love, witness the reward of the wicked and the judgments on transgressors, and triumph with holy gladness.

The words are to be read, believed, and personally applied as a basis for trusting the Lord through perplexity and discouragement. They include preservation from sickness coming near one's home, so that when measles and mumps broke out nearby, no plague coming near the dwelling was reason to thank God.
