Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
The one sheltered under God's care will tread the lion and adder, the young lion and the dragon underfoot and triumph under His protection and power. Those four living forms picture dangers and evil to be overcome, and this assurance stands together with promises of refuge, angelic care, and deliverance. The promise is for those who have chosen the Lord as Redeemer, for His commandment-keeping people standing under His shield, sharing in the salvation Christ has secured for them.
It holds for the time when the Lord comes to end the wickedness of the wicked and bring judgment, when the righteous may face peril with holy gladness in trust in God's everlasting covenant of love. It is to be read and believed and taken at face value and applied to personal experience. So applied, it assures that God will be strength and front guard and rearward, with all heaven pledged to help and strengthen and with power waiting to be bestowed. It therefore forbids losing hold on God and distrusting Him, and forbids trusting in man or the arm of flesh. It forbids becoming discouraged by perplexities, clouds, and trials, and calls for increasing faith, prayer, praise, and good courage, and for speaking faith against Satan's work to discourage.
