Psalms 91:7

A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

Those who make God their refuge and trust in Him are kept under His protection when calamity strikes, so that though thousands fall at their side and at their right hand, destruction does not come near them. This safety belongs to His commandment-keeping people who walk humbly and purely before Him in trust, secured to them under His covenant love through the merits of Christ. While His judgments fall and the wicked perish around them, the sheltered ones live to behold their reward without being struck by it themselves. In the time of trouble the saints are still in their mortal state with famine, pestilence, earthquake and widespread destruction all around them, yet God protects them through the plagues and supplies their needs, which is preservation amid suffering and privation rather than freedom from it. When deadly attacks and armed multitudes threaten their lives, angels stand guard around every faithful person so enemies cannot take them before the appointed time, and this promise is to be read, believed and taken at face value with good courage and unwavering trust in God rather than in the arm of flesh.

Promise of Divine Protection

Those who make God their refuge and put their trust in Him as their refuge are kept under His protection when calamity strikes many around them, so that though a thousand fall at the side and ten thousand at the right hand, it does not come near them. This keeping is a sheltering under His care in the midst of widespread falling and destruction on every side.

This safety belongs to His commandment-keeping people who choose the Lord as their Redeemer and who walk humbly, sincerely, and purely before Him in trust, kept safe under His covenant love. Their safety and salvation are secured through Christ's merits while they abide in His shelter. When He comes to end the wickedness of the wicked and His judgments fall, they remain under His protecting care.

While God's judgments fall and the wicked perish around them, the sheltered ones behold and see the wicked receive their reward without being struck by it themselves. They witness the fate of the wicked from a place of safety. Once probation has ended and mercy is no longer offered to the impenitent, those who abide in God's shelter have an enviable position.

The promise is to be read, believed, taken at face value, and appropriated to individual experience. It means God will be strength and front guard and rearward, with all heaven pledged to help and strengthen and with power waiting to bestow. Therefore the believer must not lose hold, distrust the Lord, become discouraged by perplexities and trials, or trust in man or the arm of flesh. Instead the believer must look on the bright side, be of good courage, talk faith, thank the Lord, and hold the Word as a stronghold, knowing that while destruction falls on every side it will not come near the one who trusts.

Safety in Time of Trouble

The promise means that many of the wicked will be struck down while the saints are still on earth in their mortal state, with destruction falling all around them. That no plague will come near their dwellings means God will protect them through the plagues, so they need not fear. Such protection would not be needed if they had already been made immortal before the plagues began. Amid the widespread destruction of the day of the Lord, and the famine, pestilence, and judgments of the time of trouble, many wicked people perish while God's people are protected from the plagues that strike around them and their needs are supplied.

Even when many around them die from famine and pestilence, they are shielded and the calamity does not reach them, as they witness the wicked's fate without being struck themselves. They pass unharmed through the final tempest, earthquake, pestilence, and natural disasters that devastate others. This protection does not mean freedom from suffering or privation, but preservation amid destruction. God is a safe pavilion to His people, while He is a devouring fire to those who break and transgress His law.

When destruction threatens through deadly attacks, and armed multitudes prepare to kill them, the faithful plead for divine protection. They may appear abandoned and endure anguish while continuing to pray. Yet angels stand guard around every faithful person, so enemies cannot take their lives before the appointed time. Weapons raised against some fail, and others are defended by angels.
