Psalms 91:8

Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

Only with the eyes will those under divine protection behold the just reward and punishment of the wicked, witnessing it without sharing their fate or being overcome by it. The judgments thus witnessed are those by which wickedness is brought to an end at the coming of the Lord. The psalm is assurance to all who choose Christ as Redeemer of His love and care, so that the righteous will triumph in the salvation He has secured, while the impenitent who rejected Him will at last recognize what they have lost when mercy has ended.

The verse places the saints still on earth in their mortal state with thousands falling around them, told not to fear the plagues because God charges His angels to protect them and keeps the plagues from their dwellings, a protection that would be needless if they were already immortal. During the day of the Lord's destruction the protected saints will see the wicked receive their reward while the calamity does not come near them. In the time of trouble God shelters and preserves those who make Him their refuge amid judgments and suffering, though they endure persecution and deprivation. The faithful will be preserved through danger and live to witness the fate of the wicked, and though in the time of trouble they may appear near death and fear abandonment, heavenly angels guard them and attacks against them cannot succeed until God permits it.

God's people may endure persecution, hardship, and want but will not be left to perish, for He will shield them and provide for them amid famine and pestilence while they witness the wicked receiving their reward. They will pass unharmed through calamities and witness the punishment of the wicked, for God is a devouring fire to those who break His law but a safe shelter to His people. They will pass unharmed through pestilence, tempest, and earthquake to witness the punishment of the wicked, for those who break God's law face Him as a devouring fire while He is a safe pavilion to His people. The verse is to be read, believed, and taken at face value as God's own word and promise for individual experience, giving assurance that God will be strength and front guard and rearward and that all heaven is pledged to help and strengthen, so the believer must not lose hold on God nor trust in man nor in the arm of flesh nor become discouraged by perplexities but must distrust nothing, take God at His word, and think of the power He is waiting to bestow.
