Psalms 94:13

That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.

Psalm 94 belongs among the post-Davidic psalms connected with the Babylonian captivity, giving voice to sorrow and desolation with longing and prayers for deliverance. In verse 13 the word rendered pit is the Hebrew shokhath, meaning destruction. The verse shows that God's chastening discipline instructs His people from and in His law, teaching them to study and obey it and to learn to follow His righteousness.

To the one so taught God gives rest from the days of adversity, bringing peace of mind through trouble. He sustains and preserves him through suffering, even long suffering, until his troubles are removed. That rest is given during adversity itself, sustaining the afflicted person while trouble continues. Those who do not despise this discipline will not be cast off. Though the wicked may persecute and oppress God's people, the persecuted are blessed.

Meanwhile destruction is being prepared for the wicked, pictured as a pit being dug for them. It will overtake them in their appointed judgment in the day of vengeance. The verse is thus encouragement for those seeking to keep God's commandments and the faith of Jesus.
