For the LORD will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.
The Lord has pledged that he will not reject his people and will not abandon those who belong to him as his own possession. That pledge held firm even when Israel fell into sin after being seduced by Midian and came under divine judgment for that unfaithfulness. At the same time, God brought judgment upon the Midianites themselves because they had schemed against his people. In this way those who band together against the righteous are made to confront their own evil and are cut off, so that judgment is turned back toward righteousness.
