Psalms 94:8

Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?

The psalm is post-Davidic, presumably composed by Asaph during the Babylonian captivity. It reflects the sorrows and desolation of the captives, their longing, and their prayers for deliverance.

Those addressed as brutish and foolish are those who neglect what matters most, whatever their wealth, learning, or standing. To be wise is to choose a worthy end and to pursue it prudently. That means seeking salvation, escaping the wrath of God, setting the heart upon a crown of glory, and making the glory of God the chief purpose of life. The question of when they will be wise presses for a present beginning: to seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness now, to come to Jesus for salvation, to lay up treasure in heaven, and to prepare for death, judgment, and eternity.
