Psalms 95:3

For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

The LORD, Jehovah, is a great God and a great and supreme King above all other supposed gods. His greatness and kingship rest on His work and ownership as Creator and Maker, for in His hand are the deep places of the earth and the strength of the hills, and the heavens, the sea, and the dry land are His because He made them and His hands formed them. His rule over the earth and its depths, the hills, the mountains, and the sea He made shows His greatness and makes Him worthy of joyful praise and worship as Creator.

By contrast with the LORD, the gods of the nations are idols, while honor, majesty, strength, and beauty belong to Him who made the heavens. Because He is the great God and King and the rock of salvation, He is to be met in His presence with joyful sung praise, with singing and joyful noise with psalms and thanksgiving. His greatness as God and King is the reason for that joyful sung worship to the Rock of salvation, joined to His power as Maker and owner of all things.

Because He is Maker and Creator, He is to be worshiped with humility and awe by bowing down and kneeling before Him. The declaration of His supreme greatness as King above all gods leads into the call to worship and bow down and kneel before the Lord our Maker. It is suited to morning worship that joins singing, reading the Word, bowing before the Lord in prayer, and a short address.

Its message of the Lord's greatness and rightful worship as Maker, grounded in His creation of the earth and sea, is for God's people today and is among the messages the Sabbath brings. Psalm 95 belongs with Psalms 91, 92, and 96 for reading alongside Isaiah's woe against those who call evil good and good evil and cast away the law of the Lord of hosts and despise the word of the Holy One of Israel, honoring the Lord as great God and King in contrast to that contempt.
