Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.
Light is planted and stored up for those who do right, to spring up later as a harvest to be continually gathered and cherished. That light is spiritual truth and understanding of Scripture and guidance from God, and Jesus himself is that light and teacher, while the gladness is joy and comfort and strength given to those whose hearts are upright. The righteous and upright are those in harmony with God who do right with humbled spirit and changed heart to live out His law, obeying His commands and taking hold of the righteousness of Christ. God himself gives this light and knowledge to those who follow Christ and draw near in humble prayer and diligent searching of Scripture, so they need not grope in uncertainty nor walk in sparks of their own kindling. The sown light must be gathered and used now in living communion with God to go forward and upward and shine on the pathway of others, and the promise therefore calls those who love the Lord and hate evil to rejoice in Him and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness.
Light Sown and Promised
Light is sown for the righteous in the sense of being planted, laid up and stored for them to spring up afterward as a harvest to be continually gathered, cherished and pressed closer to. What is laid up is to be received and kept as guidance amid wrong impressions, false principles and oppressive human rules, and those who follow Christ's instruction and draw near to God in humble prayer may receive strength and blessing from it. Full truth had not yet been gathered but remained sown to spring up for those right with God, so more light is still to come and none are to decide that no more shall come. Gathering the light that shines on the pathway brings going forward and upward, while failing to gather it brings surrounding darkness.
The light is spiritual truth, knowledge, understanding of Scripture and guidance from God, sown in His Word which is full of comfort and hope. Honest souls come to that light when they seek it with prayerful hearts through diligent study of God's Word. Jesus himself is that light and teacher, giving light to the righteous for right decisions and conduct so they need not rely on their own wisdom nor remain in uncertainty or gloom, but may have a joyful, clear experience as He teaches those who look to Him, learn from Him and seek Him.
The gladness is joy, comfort and strength given to the upright in heart, with grace and the light of Christ's countenance encouraging them through the promises of the Word. It is spiritual light and joy that comes not by merely reading the Word but by receiving and practicing it, which makes the Word effective to cleanse the life and to prove the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, condemning profession that remains conformed to the world. Truth itself is planted for the upright in heart, remaining firm and unmoved even when many apostatize and turn from precious light, and given to those who keep sleepless vigilance, hold the principles of faith, heed the warnings and entreaties of the Spirit, and fall on the Rock broken with a contrite and humble spirit.
The righteous and upright in heart are those in harmony with God who do right, whose spirit is humbled and whose heart is changed to live out His law in principle in all service toward God and toward one another. They correctly represent God by right principles instead of departing from His word in action and misrepresenting His character, loving as brethren, doing no injustice, and always showing liberality, tenderness, compassion and true courtesy. Light springs up before the person who obeys God's commands, and a life shaped by pure, heaven-born principles yields a precious harvest and serves as a safeguard to the young. Obedience to God's commandments and exalting His law depend on taking hold of the righteousness of Christ, giving assurance that Christ accepts people as soon as they come to Him, without discarding the claims of God's law.
Psalm Setting and Call
Light is sown for the righteous and gladness for the upright in heart as the portion of those who love the Lord and hate evil. This is because He preserves the souls of His saints and delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.
The promise therefore calls the righteous to rejoice in the Lord and to give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness. That rejoicing is to be expressed in serving Him with gladness and singing, and in entering His presence with thanksgiving and praise, because He made them and they are His people, for the Lord is good and His mercy and truth endure. Those in harmony with God are in this way not to carry sorrow and sadness, repining, complaining, faultfinding, evil surmising, cherishing wrong sentiments, or speaking evil of others, but to continually honor God with praise and thanksgiving, to be cheerful, to speak pleasant words from a heart aglow with love, to hate evil and keep the heart pure, and by beholding the brighter side of life to lead thousands of complaining ones to rejoice.
Serving God is the way to gain higher ground. The call reaches every soul, including teachers, ministers, and physicians, to seek that higher ground in serving the Lord. This requires putting away evil speaking, selfish plans, self-seeking, and all speech that would hurt influence or confuse judgment, speaking words that leave no wrong impression, living so as to lead no soul into false moves, and understanding the times. It is urged by the realization that the end of all things is near and that character building must soon stand the test of the investigative judgment.
Seeking and Receiving Light
Honest souls come to the light when they diligently search Scripture with prayer and with hearts softened and subdued by grace and conscience quickened by habitual prayer, until the whole soul becomes familiar with heavenly truth as with hidden treasure sought with painstaking effort. Truth is provided as light for the righteous and upright in heart, and every honest, prayerful student of the word comes to that light. This searching makes people stand firmly for what is right because it is right, expressing pure and undefiled religion interwoven with life-practice.
Light and knowledge and ability to understand the Word are given in the measure of humble, prayerful, diligent searching in faith for knowledge of revealed truth. God does not work by miracles to open its mysteries and solve its problems for the lazy, careless and inattentive student. Where few hunger and thirst for divine knowledge revealed in the Bible the result is inefficiency and weakness in spirituality, while the one who searches with a humble, prayerful heart becomes strong in understanding. Limited searching and limited prayer bring only limited light, whereas earnest hunger and thirst would raise up many more able men in the Scriptures.
The blessing comes not by merely reading the Word but by receiving and practicing it, searching to understand and obey. Receiving and practicing makes the Word effective to cleanse the life and to prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, condemning all profession that remains conformed to the world. Light springs up before the person who obeys God's commands, and a life shaped by pure, heaven-born principles yields a precious harvest and serves as a safeguard to the young. Christ came to spread truth through the world so people could know God and Jesus Christ.
God Himself gives the light and knowledge and promises to be Teacher to those who follow Christ's instruction and draw near in humble prayer. Jesus is that light and teacher, looked to and learned from for guidance for right decisions and conduct rather than relying on one's own wisdom. Therefore His people are not left to grope in uncertainty about eternal interests nor to be their own teachers walking in sparks of their own kindling, nor need they remain in uncertainty or gloom. He revives, heals and comforts the humble and contrite, and gives strength and blessing and grace and the light of His countenance for a joyful, clear experience.
The sown light must be gathered and used now, continually gathered and cherished and pressed closer to in living communication with God. Gathering brings going forward and upward and shining on the pathway of others and on the churches as the light of the world, while failing to gather brings surrounding darkness. Each person is responsible for letting that light shine, a need for living connection and for gathering every divine ray more essential at the present time than ever before. It is guidance to receive and keep amid wrong impressions, wrong principles and oppressive human rules, for greatness without goodness is valueless.
Increasing Light and Truth
Light is sown with the promise that more is still to come, so what has already been received is never to be treated as final, those who accept further light are not to be condemned, and no one is to decide that no more light shall be given. In the dispute over the law in Galatians neither side possessed all the light and neither position was perfect, for the full truth on the law had not yet been gathered but remained sown to spring up for those who are right with God. Hundreds do not yet know why they believe the doctrines they do.
Because full understanding has not yet been gathered, God's people must cling close to the Bible alone for a correct knowledge of His will, and every person must search the Scriptures diligently for himself rather than letting leaders search for him. Otherwise the church will fall into Pharisaism and into the condition of the Jews in Christ's time, with plenty of machinery, forms and customs but little fruit. In coming trial their work must correspond with Christ's work of undoing heavy burdens, letting the oppressed go free, and breaking every yoke.
Those who seek what God has revealed can come to truth, but they should be content with what He has made known rather than pursue mysteries He has not revealed. The sown light comes as increased light shining through old and precious truths presented in new forms, and as lessons learned daily in the school of Christ where God guides the events of human life. Even in a year marked by struggles, defeat, trials and discouragements, light and gladness are sown for the righteous and upright in heart, giving also peace, joy, victory and strength amid weakness.
Fully appreciated and trusted in hard places, this light better qualifies laborers to work together with God, guards against discouragement and hasty conclusions, and prepares to enter the new year aright. This light and truth remain firm and unmoved even when many apostatize and turn from precious light. It is given to those who keep sleepless vigilance, hold the principles of faith, heed the warnings and entreaties of the Spirit, and fall on the Rock broken with a contrite and humble spirit.
Righteous Living and Witness
Light is provided for the righteous and truth for the upright in heart to make the soul familiar with heavenly truth through diligent searching of Scripture joined with prayer and hearts softened by grace. Those who receive it stand firmly for what is right because it is right. This truth is expressed in pure and undefiled religion interwoven with life-practice, and those who honor God are honored by Him.
Light and gladness attend the righteous and upright in heart as blessings accompanying a right course of life. That course is expressed through gratitude shown by wise and noble use of God's gifts, good influence upon others, and reforming wrong customs rather than following them. Choosing peace and love brings a harvest of peace and love, while choosing contention brings reaping what one has sown.
God sows light by giving rays of light and understanding of Scripture to different fellow workers, with gladness for upright hearts who receive it. No laborer He is using is to stand apart from a fellow laborer, criticize him for not laboring in exactly the same way, set himself off in a corner of the vineyard as a special plot, or think his own way of handling an interest is the only perfect way. While keeping personal individuality and working in personal armor, each worker is to have heart bound to heart, be willing to improve habits and methods of labor, welcome counsel given through another worker, learn from one another, and gather up every ray of light imparted to fellow workers.
The light is precious truth and instruction from God, wonderful exalted truths spoken through messengers whose lips are cleansed and kindled by heaven as with a live coal from the altar. In them the highest wisdom and the duties of faith harmonize, richly feeding the soul as a feast and forming solid material and timber for building character. Those who receive this light are to give it due attention, speak of it and much of Jesus, praise God, and show it by faithfully doing His commands. Instead they are to spend as little time as possible dwelling and talking on perplexing faults, trials, disappointments, mistakes, and lack of love in others, which discourages and kills the precious plant of love in the heart.
Light for the righteous is light and life to win souls to Jesus Christ. It is given for taking a stand in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth and laboring for the saving of souls, for talking with neighbors, praying with them, and opening the Scriptures to them, which strengthens religious life and gives confidence in the One who hears prayer. It is given for bearing the message of mercy to the world as long as God spares life.
Light is truth treasured in the soul through constant learning under Christ's yoke as the Great Teacher and Master. The more learned from Christ, the more wisdom gained for blessing and the more there is to communicate, giving greater influence for good over other minds. This increase is to be used humbly, with no display or boasting of knowledge, no lifting up of the soul in vanity or self-sufficiency, and no display of entrusted talents.
Those accepting present truth should become intelligent about the dwelling and habitation God has given them and walk in the light as it shines on their pathway. That walking means learning and practicing health principles concerning diet, drink, habits, and care of the body. This sown light and truth remain even while hindrances continue and the wheels of true reform are blocked. Each soul must place himself individually in right relation to life and health and become a fruit-bearing branch of the true Vine.
Joy and Strength Assured
God's Word is full of comfort and hope because precious light is sown in it for the righteous and truth for the upright in heart. Light and gladness are promised to the righteous and upright in heart, and God's promises in the Word encourage them. Jesus gives them grace and strength and the light of His countenance.
Those in harmony with God are not to carry sorrow and sadness, repining, complaining, faultfinding, evil surmising, cherishing wrong sentiments, or speaking evil of others. They are to continually honor God with praise and thanksgiving, to be cheerful, to speak pleasant words from a heart aglow with love, to hate evil and keep the heart pure. By beholding the brighter side of life they lead thousands of complaining ones to rejoice. Instead of dwelling on and talking about perplexing faults and lack of love in others, which discourages and kills love in the heart, those who receive this light give it due attention, speak of it and of Jesus, and show it by faithfully doing God's commands. They spend as little time as possible on trials, disappointments, and mistakes, lest by looking and talking of perplexing things the precious plant of love is killed in the soul.
They need not stumble along in midnight darkness nor remain in uncertainty or gloom. Illumination with truth and joy has been planted for them amid moral darkness to shine into minds and hearts and roll back darkness until receivers reflect that light to others. That planted light places feet on the true foundation where storm and tempest cannot move them, even when surrounded by souls with no tangible faith.
Walking with Jesus and talking with Jesus brings light and comfort and love and power from Him as the best Friend. His bright beams as the Sun of Righteousness disperse every dark cloud. This removes discouragement and confusion and gives victory and courage to speak truth without doubts. While the third angel's message pierces moral darkness black as velvet, it brings encouragement to discouraged and confused believers.
God provides this light for people who live rightly even in cares, perplexities and trials. They should tell everything to Jesus, trusting His open ear to prayer and His promise never to leave or forsake them, and should not let sorrow shadow their path. They look past what is seen to what is unseen and to the reward waiting at the end of the journey. They are strong in the Lord who knows every perplexity and sorrow, depending not on their own strength but clinging to Him as a present help in every need and as the higher Rock.
