Revelation 10:6
And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer: And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:
The mighty Angel standing with one foot on the sea and one on the land is Jesus Christ, swearing with a most solemn oath by Him who lives forever, the Creator of heaven and earth and sea and all that is in them. That there should be time no longer means the end of prophetic time before the coming of the Lord, not the end of the world's history nor the close of probation. This was fulfilled when the longest prophetic period reaching from 1842 to the autumn of 1844 ended in bitter disappointment, after which there can be no definite tracing of prophetic time and time will never again be a test of faith. His stance shows the wide extent of the proclamation, the last message of warning to cross the broad waters to distant lands and islands of the sea and be carried to all the world. The oath warns that time is short and almost finished, calling all to get ready quickly and to spend the little remaining time in self-denial, service, and reflecting the image of Jesus until the faithful receive their reward.
The Oath and Its Meaning
The mighty Angel of the oath is Jesus Christ Himself. He stands with one foot upon the sea and one upon the land, cries with a loud voice, and proclaims with a most solemn oath by Him that liveth for ever and ever, the Creator of heaven and the things therein, and the earth and the things therein, and the sea and the things therein. That stance with one foot on the sea and the other on the land signifies the wide extent of the proclamation. The message is to cross the broad waters to distant lands, to be proclaimed in other countries, even to all the world.
The time sworn, that there should be time no longer, is the end of prophetic time which should precede the advent of the Lord. It is not the end of this world's history, nor the end of probationary time.
The proclamation is made when the sealed book is opened at the time of the end. The sealed book is not Revelation but that portion of Daniel relating to the last days. Its opening means Daniel is now unsealed, and the revelation made by Christ to John is to go to all the inhabitants of the earth. By the increase of knowledge a people is to be prepared to stand in the latter days.
Fulfillment in 1844
The oath that there should be time no longer announces the end of the prophetic periods. That end was fulfilled after the period reaching from 1842 to 1844, the longest reckoning reaching to the autumn of 1844, after which there can be no definite tracing of prophetic time. Its fulfillment belongs to the time of the end together with the proclamation that the hour of God's judgment is come. It was met when those who ardently expected to see the Lord in 1844 encountered bitter disappointment. That disappointment came in God's order so that hearts should be revealed.
The oath follows the specific work of the first and second angels' messages, with no further light beyond those messages to be revealed before they had done that work. The special light expressed in the seven thunders was a delineation of events under the first and second angels' messages. It was withheld because faith must be tested, and in God's order most wonderful and advanced truths would then be proclaimed. Therefore the people will have no other message upon definite time and no further message based on definite time. Time has not been a test of faith since 1844 and will never again be a test, and figures used to predict prophetic dates are time theories that leave no room under the Angel's declaration.
God prepared the church for every cloud and foresaw every opposing force raised to counterwork His work. He caused all to take place as He predicted through His prophets, and did not leave His church in darkness and forsaken but traced in prophetic declarations what would occur. Through His providence acting in its appointed place in history He brought about what His Spirit inspired the prophets to foretell, and all His purposes will be fulfilled and established.
Worldwide Warning and Readiness
The one foot upon the sea and the other upon the land shows that the proclamation is to be carried to distant lands. The ocean is to be crossed and the islands of the sea are to hear it. It is the last message of warning to the world.
The eating of the little book represents the comprehension of truth and the glad reception of the message. The truth concerning the time of the advent of the Lord was precious to souls. Time is short and almost finished and will come to an end. All are called to get ready, and what is done must be done quickly. The call is to cry for the arm of the Lord to be revealed before time ends.
The little remaining time is to be used by believers for self-denial and well-doing and service. Those who have recently accepted the third angel's message have only a short time to prepare and to do the great work needed. That work includes dying more fully to the world and reflecting the image of Jesus. Those who continue faithful in well-doing will receive their reward when time is no longer.
