Revelation 12:1
And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
The woman clothed with the sun is the people of God pictured as a holy woman and her children. The verse opens a line of prophecy centered on the dragon who sought to destroy Christ at His birth. That dragon is primarily Satan, who moved Herod to attempt to kill the Savior, and secondarily pagan Rome as Satan's chief agent in making war on Christ and His people during the first centuries of the Christian era.
The verse begins the portrayal of the last great conflict between the obedient and the disobedient, the only two parties on earth, with one side standing under the bloodstained banner of Jesus Christ and the other standing under the black banner of rebellion. It points to a war carried on by earthly governments that trample God's law and persecute His people until the close of time, in which God's people stand greatly in the minority. In the last days only a remnant still exists, those who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
The verse belongs to the prophecies of chapters 12 to 18 that are being fulfilled now, as the last message of warning to be heard by all people. That fulfillment leads to the very last call to the churches in the eighteenth chapter, then to the destruction of the beast and false prophet, the binding of the dragon for a thousand years, the resurrection and final destruction of the wicked, and the final triumph and reign of Christ on this earth.
