Revelation 16:15

Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

Christ Himself speaks plainly without symbols in the midst of the final gathering to Armageddon, announcing His coming and blessing those who stay watchful. His coming will be sudden and unexpected, catching the unwatchful by surprise like a thief upon a world asleep in carnal security and absorbed in pleasure and gain. Safety lies only in eternal vigilance, staying wide-awake as faithful sentinels who anticipate His coming and hasten the day of God. The garments to be kept are the robe of His righteousness, the clean white raiment woven in heaven and received by faith, kept only by faith and obedience in a cleansed life that keeps God's commandments and walks in the light. This life is the only opportunity to receive that righteousness and be ready, for probation is fast closing and after His intercession ends mercy no longer invites, so readiness is personal and urgent now before the plagues fall.

Words and Final Setting

The warning is Christ Himself speaking plainly, without symbols, announcing His own coming and blessing the watchful in the very midst of the final gathering. He declares Himself coming suddenly and unexpectedly while demonic miracle-working spirits are gathering the kings of the earth for the battle of the great day of God Almighty, and He pronounces blessed those who stay alert and keep their spiritual clothing so they are not left exposed in shame.

It stands after unclean miracle-working spirits of devils, like frogs out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and false prophet, go forth to the kings of the earth and of the whole world to gather them to that battle. That gathering is Armageddon, the last great conflict where all the world takes one side or the other and only two classes remain, those who keep God's law and bear His signet and those who violate it under the prince of darkness. At the same time Satan is mustering his forces of evil under his banner and training them for mastery, while angels are already girded awaiting the mandate to pour out vials of wrath because the Spirit is withdrawing and destroying angels take up vengeance.

The destructive conflict is held back while four mighty angels hold the four winds and hold in check the nations eager for conflict until the servants of God are sealed in their foreheads. Angels belt the world with linked hands about it, refusing Satan his claim to supremacy and with sleepless vigilance keeping his armies at bay till the sealing is accomplished. When this restraining power is removed there will come a time of trouble and anguish, with deadly instruments of warfare invented, vessels with living cargo entombed in the deep, and all who lack the spirit of truth uniting under satanic leadership kept under control only till Armageddon comes.

John's vision of this setting shows terrible scenes as signs of Christ's coming, with armies mustering for battle and men's hearts failing them for fear. He saw the earth moved out of its place, the mountains carried into the midst of the sea with roaring and troubled waves, and the vials of wrath opened with pestilence, famine and death coming upon the inhabitants of the earth. Tracing God's dealings with the nations thus marshaled for the conflict shows prophecy fulfilled in the progress of events in history.

Coming as a Thief

Behold, I come as a thief means the coming will be sudden and unexpected, catching the unwatchful by surprise as a thief surprises, while blessing falls on those who stay alert and ready amid the final conflict and fulfilled prophecy. The warning bears especially on those lulled into careless security by false teachers who expect earthly prosperity, dismiss the signs of the times, or put off the return, while people scorn the promise of the coming and carry on as though life will continue unchanged. The day of God then comes suddenly as a snare to those who make this world their home, and the blessing rests on the one who watches and keeps the garments so as not to walk naked in shame. That setting is the last-day crisis in which deceptive powers gather people against God, after the miracle-working power gathers the world to battle.

Because He comes suddenly in this way, no one can fix the time of the coming or say He delays His coming five years, ten years, or twenty years. He comes as a thief upon a world asleep in carnal security and careless ease, full of rioting and godless pleasure, putting His coming afar off, laughing at warnings and calling those who warn fanatics. The world has been rocked to sleep by the peace and safety cry of professed watchmen, with scoffers uttering the challenge about the promise of His coming, while everything is absorbed in busy activity and selfish ambition for gain. False, unfaithful shepherds soothe consciences by crying peace and safety, and sudden destruction comes upon those at ease, with none escaping except those who watch and keep their garments white.

The unprepared are lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God, boasting that all things remain as from the beginning and that tomorrow shall be more abundant, going deeper into pleasure-loving, carrying on money-making without principle, and seeking knowledge of everything but the Bible. They forget admonitions as the inhabitants of Noah's world did before the Flood and as the dwellers in Sodom did until sudden destruction came, and so it will be in the day when the Son of man is revealed. Watching and keeping garments in contrast means preparation of character hour by hour, lest losing the garments leave one naked and exposed in shame.

The thief image is also applied to spurious scientific theories that enter secretly, steal the landmarks, and undermine the pillars of faith. The most subtle temptations come in elevated form, spiritualizing present truth until the distinction between substance and shadow is lost.

Watching and Keeping Garments

Blessed watching means eternal vigilance is the only safety, for even those who know the truth are in danger of growing careless and losing the spirit of watchfulness. To watch is to stay wide-awake and not sleep, standing as faithful sentinels on the watchtower anticipating the Lord's coming. Watching looks for His coming and also hastens the day of God, and that coming is the blessed hope.

Those who watch and keep their garments become more active in doing and working in the Lord's vineyard, strictly temperate in eating and dressing, with humility and simplicity in all acts. They are ready, sober and watching unto prayer, working with greatest vigilance to arouse souls to their danger and proclaiming by word and action that the end of all things is at hand. In the Armageddon conflict, when all the world is on one side or the other and none must be found sleeping, they are to be as wise virgins having oil in vessels with their lamps. That oil is grace, the power of the Holy Ghost upon believers to sustain faith and courage in the final desperate struggle when evil angels unite with evil men, while the Captain of the Lord's host stands at the head of the angels of heaven to direct the battle.

The garments to be kept are the robe of Christ's righteousness, the clean white robe and white raiment woven in heaven. It is the wedding garment, the righteousness of the saints, which is the righteousness of Christ and of His character. It is received by faith and kept only by faith and obedience in doing works of righteousness, dealing honestly with self and looking to Jesus to be changed into His image by beholding. Without it a person remains in citizen's dress, trusting the filthy rags of human righteousness and despising God's provision. To be without it is to be spiritually naked and exposed to shame, unready to stand before God in the last-day crisis and in the judgment.

Walking naked recalls Adam and Eve left naked when the garment of light and security departed after transgression. So losing these garments leaves one naked and exposed in shame, with character unprepared hour by hour.

Keeping the garments means being in Christ as a new creature where old things are passed away and all things are become new. It means not retaining old sinful habits and practices, not walking in darkness with garments defiled by sin, but being cleansed and sanctified as vessels unto honor. It means abiding in Him and not sinning, doing righteousness even as He is righteous, keeping God's commandments in love to God and overcoming the world by faith. It means walking in the light, reading the Word and practicing it, revealing the power of His grace in daily life, and remaining undefiled and unspotted from the world to walk with Christ in white. All this is preparation to appear before the judgment seat of Christ to receive according to what was done in the body whether good or bad.

Keeping the garments requires surrendering to God, seeking refuge in Christ, and receiving Him. It requires having sins washed away, guilt taken away by Christ the Burden-bearer, and receiving a clean heart and new heart purified by His righteousness. It means cherishing the hope of uniting with the redeemed at His coming and having only one aim in life, to be laborers together with God and thus complete in Christ.

Keeping the garments requires an intense desire for Christ's robe, letting truth enter the practical life. It means not remaining with only the ABC of Christian experience but advancing to a higher standard in handling sacred things. It means appropriating and digesting Christ's Word, which is eating His flesh and drinking His blood, knowing God and Jesus Christ whom He sent. It means walking with Jesus and communing with Him, proving friendship with Christ in words, in spirit, in love to Jesus and in love for the souls for whom He died. It means studying, digesting and living the Word with earnest self-examination in the little remaining probation, standing on the Rock and hiding in the only Refuge, one with Christ as He is one with the Father, and being transformed by the renewing of the heart into Christ's character, which is the only safety that nothing can separate from God.

Warning to the Unready

Those who fail to watch and keep their garments will be found unready, spiritually unprepared and no longer undefiled, walking naked with shame exposed and facing the shameful results of their choices in the judgment when motives, words, deeds and use of time are measured. The garments are Christ's righteousness and the righteousness of His character, which must be received in this life, for this life is the only opportunity to prepare for eternity and form a character fit for His kingdom, and keeping them means remaining undefiled and walking with Christ in white, cherishing the hope of uniting with the redeemed at His coming with the one aim to be laborers together with God and thus complete in Christ. Those who profess Christ are not ready if they neglect the souls around them, and the urgency is to be ready before mercy ends, for the wicked will face the plagues without shelter.

The unprepared are lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God, absorbed in pleasure and in worldly plans and pursuits that neglect the Bible, letting earthly concerns consume attention until it is too late to prepare for heaven. They boast that all things remain as from the beginning and that tomorrow shall be more abundant, going deeper into pleasure-loving, carrying on money-making without principle, and seeking knowledge of everything but the Bible, forgetting God's admonitions. He comes as a thief upon a world asleep in carnal security, full of rioting and godless pleasure, putting His coming afar off, laughing at warnings and calling those who warn fanatics, while life is carried on as though unchanged. To lose the garments is to be left naked and exposed in shame as Adam and Eve were left naked when the garment of light and security departed after transgression, so watching and keeping garments means preparation of character hour by hour, since every passing hour leaves less time to prepare.

As it was with the inhabitants of Noah's world before the Flood and with the dwellers in Sodom until sudden destruction came, so it will be in the day when the Son of man is revealed. Many are lulled into careless security by false teachers who promise earthly prosperity, dismiss the signs of the times, or put off the Lord's return, while they scorn the promise of His coming. False, unfaithful shepherds soothe consciences by crying peace and safety, and sudden destruction comes upon those at ease as a snare to those who make this world their home, and none will escape except those who watch and keep their garments white. False shepherds will face the plagues, while the saints who hold fast to the truth and keep God's commandments will be vindicated, and the unrighteous will ultimately be destroyed.

The warning belongs to a time of spiritual deception and impending judgment, before honest ones in fallen churches are called out to join the remnant and before the loud cry, when deceptive religious excitement will make some think God is still working through those churches. In that setting the warning and blessing distinguish those who remain watchful and ready from those overtaken unprepared, identifying some as facing the plagues and others as being translated to heaven at His second coming without dying. When the seven last plagues fall, the wicked who have no shelter suffer in anguish and regret for rejecting the truth and warnings that could have prepared them. In that agony they reproach those who stood in the way of warning them, blaming family members and ministers for keeping them from accepting the truth and warning them of that hour, and those reproaches make hearts faint.

Place Among the Plagues

The verse belongs to the account of the seven last plagues, the seven vials of God's wrath poured out on land and sea and air upon a godless world. It stands within the prophecy of their outpouring presented as coming judgment with the end near and prophecy fulfilled. The written word explains how to escape those plagues, and those who neglect that word will be judged by it forever.

The plagues are poured out only after Jesus finishes His interceding work for Israel in the most holy place and every case is decided for salvation or destruction. Until then wrath cannot come, but when the work is done He lays off priestly attire with bell and pomegranate, steps from between the Father and man, and clothes Himself with garments of vengeance, and God keeps silent no longer. The anger of nations, the wrath of God in the plagues, and the time to judge the dead follow in order as separate events. By then warnings have been given and mercy no longer invites, so desire to escape or plead for cleansing blood comes too late. The four angels hold the four winds until the sanctuary work is done, then the plagues fall and enrage the wicked against the righteous whom they blame for bringing them.

They fall on those without shelter who worship the beast and its image and receive its mark. That mark is bound to transgressing God's law and trampling His Sabbath, breaking His covenant to accept a spurious rest-day and man-made institution in its place. It concerns Satan's work to destroy the Sabbath memorial of creation given in Eden and institute a spurious sabbath, leading men and women to disregard the fourth commandment and give its glory and honor to an idol, placing them on his side in worldwide apostasy against God's law. Unrighteousness has swollen to a fearful pass, men have exceeded the bounds of grace, made void His law and made human laws supreme, trampling it in rebellion with evil angels with hearts fully set to do evil. God keeps a reckoning of guilt and restrains His own attributes in wonderful forbearance while compassion flows, but He will intervene to vindicate His honor and punish iniquity without mixture of mercy.

Drops and sprinklings from the vials are already falling on land and sea and air as faint premonitions of the full outpouring to come in fuller measure in the near future. They come in awful calamities by sea with vessels hurled into eternity without warning, and in accidents by land with fire consuming hoarded riches and the most costly structures as by fire from heaven. They include unusually destructive fires, earthquakes burying cities and villages, terrible railway accidents, tornadoes and floods destroying immense property and more than two thousand lives, vitiated air with deadly miasma, pestilence, cholera and unexplainable diseases, diphtheria harvesting little ones, great mortality and crimes greater than on record. The causes of these unusual conditions are searched for in vain, for God has not restrained the powers of darkness from vitiating the air, and the disturbances so far are very limited and premonitory of rending of the earth's crust, ruin of lordly palaces built by oppression and wealth secured at starvation prices, and terrible shaking of the religious world. The Lord will not protect the property of transgressors but permits these judgments that the world take heed, professing Christians come to their senses, and sinners tremble, for the end of all things is at hand. These judgments now sent show how fast the last great crisis approaches and call for less strife and more thought on the nearness of the end, and those who claim they have no special meaning will soon be forced to understand.

The plagues on Egypt before and during Israel's deliverance foreshadow these plagues and the saints' deliverance, for they fall on the wicked just before and at deliverance. They are future full wrath on the living wicked after priestly work and before resurrection and second advent, not the final execution at the second death after which God makes all new and the wicked burn root and branch. Shelter is drawn over God's people during the sealing before the plagues fall, while Satan tries to hold people in deception until sealing is past and those without shelter are left exposed. In that crisis the wicked turn against the righteous with a decree to kill them, while saints pass through Jacob's trouble before God delivers by His voice and the 144,000 triumph.

Escaping requires recognizing the signs of the times, for failure to recognize them in a wicked and adulterous generation leaves one in danger of perishing under the vials. The symbols and figures of the chapter require close prayerful study rather than human ideas, to shape conduct and guide action so as to avoid the plagues. Before the angel of mercy leaves the world God still offers exchange of darkness for light, error for truth, and sin for righteousness, though patience will not always wait and when punishment begins there is no respite until the end. Only those sanctified through truth in love of God will stand hid with Christ until desolation is past, and no refuge of lies will hide from wrath. Those who neglect the Word will have motives, words, deeds and use of time measured by it, and will prove unworthy stewards on probation unless consecrated, cleansed and disciplined to holy practice in soul-saving with time, wisdom, Word and Spirit.

Call to Present Readiness

The verse stands among the prophecies of Revelation 12 to 18 that are being fulfilled. Those judgments of Revelation 16:1-21 show how fast the last great crisis is approaching. The judgments now being sent upon the earth have special meaning and call for less time in strife and contention and more thought about the nearness of the end. Those who claim these judgments have no special meaning will soon be forced to understand what they now choose not to understand.

Christ's coming is near, much nearer than when first believed, with evidence on all sides in changes and turmoil, violence and crime. Watching means waking up and not sleeping now, staying wide-awake. Keeping garments means preparing white garments in which to stand in the great day of the Lord. Those who have this light need not be deceived if they study the Word of God, and if humble and obedient they will walk in a plain path. They must feel deep need of God and be converted daily to His service with Christ as Pattern, for the Lord will not be trifled with. The warning calls for definite work and faithful shepherds who meet the spiritual needs of the people and give the trumpet a certain sound.

This life is the only opportunity to receive Christ's righteousness, to prepare for eternity and to form a character fit for Christ's kingdom and for the home He has made ready for those who obey His commandments. Keeping the garments means putting on the robe of Christ's righteousness in this life and having on the wedding garment at the King's feast. There is no second probation in which to prepare for eternity, for the days of probation are fast closing and the end is near. The verse warns that Christ's coming will be unexpected and will find some unready, pronouncing blessed those who watch and keep their garments so they are not found spiritually unready and exposed to shame. It belongs to the time when the plagues fall after Jesus has ended His work of intercession, when warnings have been given and mercy has ceased to invite sinners. Then those who did not choose salvation can no longer obtain cleansing through atoning blood or plead for more time, and their desire to escape judgment comes too late. To watch and keep garments is to avoid a heart overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness and cares of life, to be ready for the Son of Man coming in an hour not thought of, and to watch and pray always to be counted worthy to escape the things coming to pass and to stand before the Son of Man.

Readiness for Christ's coming is a personal and urgent concern now before the falling of the plagues and while servants are being sealed in the brief time before the final battle. Watching and keeping garments means seeking forgiveness, having guilt removed by Christ, and receiving a clean heart purified by His righteousness, for without refuge in Christ a person is exposed to shame. Preparation means examining the heart, studying and living by God's Word, and being transformed into Christ's character, and this spiritual readiness is the believer's safety. Anything that distracts people from this vigilant preparation is a danger. Christ is shown coming suddenly as a thief while the plagues fall, and readiness means receiving the Holy Ghost and keeping watch now. Soon the plagues will fall and many professed people are unready, coming up to the falling of the plagues without a shelter, and when the plagues begin to fall the unready will wring their hands and the hour will be too late.

The verse is part of a solemn warning about the last events of earth's history, warning that Christ's coming will be unexpected and blessing those who remain watchful and keep their garments. It calls for readiness and faithfulness in the last days rather than spiritual sleep or reliance on human theories, holding to God's Word and receiving grace, truth, and power through Christ. It connects unexpected return to constant watchfulness and readiness as part of living in expectation of soon appearing. This is a solemn, fearful present time when angels are already girded awaiting the mandate to pour vials of wrath upon the world and destroying angels are taking up the work of vengeance because the Spirit is gradually withdrawing from the world. At the same time Satan is mustering forces of evil, going forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world to gather them under his banner and train them for the battle of that great day of God Almighty, making his most powerful efforts for mastery in the last great conflict. Fundamental principles will be brought out and decisions made in regard to them, skepticism prevails everywhere, ungodliness abounds, and the faith of individual members will be tested as though there were not another person in the world. Satan incites nations to war to distract from preparation, so the warning calls for readiness amid deceptions and conflicts of the last days. God's people cannot afford to be off guard for one moment, for the church is still militant and must fight against seen and unseen foes. Satanic agencies in human form are on the ground in every city, busily organizing into parties those opposed to God's law, with professed saints and avowed unbelievers taking stand with these parties, and these confederacies will continue until Christ shall leave His place of intercession before the mercy seat and shall put on the garments of vengeance. Therefore believers must be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, putting on the whole armor of God to stand against the wiles of the devil. The warfare is not against flesh and blood but against principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places, requiring loins girt with truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with preparation of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith to quench fiery darts, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God, to withstand in the evil day.

To watch and keep garments means each person carries the burden of knowing sins forgiven, guilt taken away by Christ the Burden-bearer, a clean heart, and the righteousness of Jesus Christ by faith. It means seeking refuge in Christ, conforming character to Christ's character, standing on the Rock, hiding in the only Refuge, being one with Christ as He is one with the Father, and working as heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ in partnership with Him. It calls for earnest self-examination in the little remaining probation, cherishing faith, studying, digesting and living the Word which is eating Christ's flesh and drinking His blood, and being transformed by renewing of the heart into Christ's character, which is the only safety that nothing can separate from God. Keeping the garments means being clothed in white raiment, the righteousness of saints, so nakedness and shame do not appear, holding fast the present truth that is lightening the earth with its glory and contending earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints amid divisions where wheat and tares grow together. Those who heed this will be prepared to stand without fault before God, arrayed in fine linen clean and white at the marriage of the Lamb. Blessing belongs to watching and keeping garments by living above the world, regarding earthly things, worldly honor and distinction as emptiness and nothingness, advancing heavenward as pilgrim and stranger with citizenship above. It means gathering the righteousness of Christ into the soul to be a burning and shining light in moral darkness, with vigorous faith, lively hope, fervent love and holy consecrated zeal that makes a decided distinction from the world, and being ready to escape the things coming to pass and to stand before the Son of man. The mind must not be diverted with long discussions and new theories about prophecies already made plain nor any soul made less vigilant, because the storm of the last great battle is coming when kingdom rises against kingdom after the four winds held until God's servants are sealed. The heart must not be exercised unto covetousness while the world sports itself in its own wickedness.
