Angel Throws Millstone into the Sea as Babylon BurnsBible World

Revelation 18:2

And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

The mighty announcement declares that Babylon has completely fallen and become a dwelling and prison for demons and every foul and unclean influence. It identifies fallen Babylon as the churches that refuse the warnings of the first, second, and third angels of Revelation 14:6-12, rejecting truth for false doctrine and deepening corruption since 1844. The message is now repeated with great power as the loud cry that swells the third angel's message, lightens the earth with glory, and prepares a people to stand in the final test over God's law and Sabbath. Its fall came through exalting a false sabbath above the seventh-day Sabbath, teaching immortality of the soul and kindred errors, joining with the world and the state, and opening the way to spiritualism and lawlessness. It is joined to the call to come out from her communion so as not to share her sins and plagues, for God still has honest and faithful souls within her who will hear and separate.

Voice and Wording

The mighty cry with a strong voice means the message is to be proclaimed with great power, intensifying the first and second messages and lighting the earth with glory, clear and forceful and not weakened by vagueness or competing interests, with the Sabbath presented as the great test for this time. It is to be presented boldly and powerfully, without being softened or muffled, as part of strengthening and confirming the third angel's message, which is of the highest importance as a life-and-death question to be given in no measured terms. Nothing is to tone it down or muffle it, and Satan's devised binding about of the proclamation and his plans and methods must be guarded against. It is to be sounded now, just now, mightily and openly and not in whispered, indefinite, tame and voiceless manner, showing people where they stand and allowing nothing to rise to dim the light, with expectation of the demonstration of the Spirit to convict and convert. It is a wonderful message and note of warning to go with power in cities, at camp-meetings, and at every opportunity, by messengers equipped for the battle and transformed in character, lifting up the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus as the standard, to be dwelt on, read, explained and enforced as aggressive warfare while tremendous issues are upon us, to separate a people to stand upon the platform of eternal truth, repeating like the first and second angels the call to come out.

The fallen condition is total demonic and unclean corruption, become a dwelling place of demons and a refuge and prison and hold for every foul and evil spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hateful bird. It is not a soft, smooth announcement but words calculated to stir hearts to their very depths, proclaiming the complete fall and its becoming a dwelling for evil and uncleanness, to be sounded by human agencies cooperating with divine instrumentalities under the heavenly endowment of the Holy Spirit unto a Pentecost-like ingathering where thousands are converted in a day. The religious world in this deluded state shares fornication with all nations, with kings joining and merchants growing rich from luxury, bringing heaven's call for God's people to come out to escape sharing sins and receiving plagues, carrying the judgment of double reward, torment and sorrow for pride, and one-day plagues of death and mourning and famine and utter burning by the strong judging Lord, a message Satan wants silenced and not treated as inferior.

The angel giving the cry has great power and lightens the earth with his glory, and his work is to lighten the world with that glory in worldwide illumination. The other angel coming down from heaven represents this giving of the loud cry by those preparing to proclaim with mighty strength the fall and corrupt condition, which will lighten the whole earth with the glory of God. That light brings God's help and glory to all who love Him and obey His law, proclaiming the great salvation He longs to bestow, with the richest truths presented again and again to His people and given to all, in harmony with the first, second, and third angels.

Identity of Fallen Babylon

Fallen Babylon is the churches that will not receive the warnings given in the first, second, and third angels' messages, refusing the messages of truth and accepting a lie, and the message of the chapter is plain and clearly defined so that anyone who reads need not be deceived. It belongs to the second proclamation of the fall, first carried to the churches announcing their downfall and calling people to come out of her, now to be proclaimed again to Babylon the churches.

Babylon includes Rome, which exalted Sunday above the seventh-day Sabbath blessed and sanctified by Jehovah, and the Protestant world that accepted that false and spurious day of worship, with the nations sharing her corruption as drinking her wine. The Waldenses rightly declared the Church of Rome to be the apostate Babylon and resisted its corruptions even at peril of life.

Babylon means confusion, the existing confusion of conflicting creeds and sects seen in the world-loving churches of the last days. That confusion comes from turning from plain Bible teaching to build up creed from human speculations and pleasing fables, exalting human wisdom above God's word, teaching that the transgressor shall not die and that salvation may be secured without obedience to the law, which prevents the unity that accepting God's standard would bring and produces divisions and dissension. Lack of organization does not protect from being Babylon, for disorganized and disordered churches without plan, system, and order to act, enforce, and carry out discipline scatter into fragments and are Babylon, while organizing to maintain order and unite believers does not make a church Babylon. This Babylonian confusion is nourished by uncertain teachers who foster disunion and by those who indirectly tear down through indifference, doubts, suspicions, fears, and demanding greater evidence instead of zealously building up, retarding advance and reform, until by gradual departure and assimilation to the world heaven's light is withdrawn and they are left blind, wretched, and naked.

The pollution denounced does not belong to buildings or halls of worship but to sinful human beings who corrupt their souls by conforming to wicked practices. Converted and unconverted united together in the nominal churches produces the confusion and corruption, filling them with every foul spirit and unclean influence.

The verse applies to churches whose principles are corrupted, fallen and become the hold of every foul spirit and the cage of every unclean and hateful bird. In a place of great wickedness such as Maitland the churches of all denominations are left without a true shepherd and without a fair chance, because their ministers feed themselves instead of feeding the flock and destroy those that are fed instead of reforming them, while false shepherds turn people from God's law to human theories bringing widespread impiety whose work will react upon them. The same fallen refuge where those departing from the faith gather was seen at Battle Creek with false statements and a corrupted sanitarium, where every actual transgression brings condemnation and one whose conscience has become truth-hardened after great light becomes less susceptible to the strivings of the Spirit, bringing divine displeasure in a critical time when all need to unify and speak the same things.

The verse does not identify the Seventh-day Adventist Church or God's commandment-keeping, Sabbath-keeping people as Babylon. To turn its language of habitation of devils, hold of every foul spirit, and cage of every unclean and hateful bird against them, or to call them a harlot, a den of thieves, Babylon, or the habitation of devils, with its added charges of making nations drunk with wine of fornication, confederacy with kings and great men, growing rich through delicacies, and sins reaching heaven, is an erroneous application, the work of the accuser, attended by false power and unbalanced minds, for God has given no man any such message to bear. It is not a denunciation to be applied during a time when the church is receiving the Spirit, nor does it make the loud cry a call to leave her fellowship, since the Laodicean reproof is given to restore and heal, and a message making the loud cry a call for God's people as a body to leave Babylon is not truth. Even a powerful-sounding proclamation claiming Adventists themselves are Babylon is not the divine loud cry that lightens the earth with glory but may be delusion.

No divine credentials belong to a so-called loud cry that merely condemns the church or appears zealous and inspired, for its authority must be tested rather than accepted for sounding powerful. Accusing the church, predicting its leaders will fall through self-exaltation to be replaced by humble men who come to the front and do wonderful things, misusing testimonies to give force and appearance of truth, stealing membership lists such as the Review and Herald list to spread the message, or setting a time for probation to close that fails, are not its credentials, and even when urged with intelligence, acceptable address, self-denial, zeal, earnestness, and appearance of consecration, devotion, and inspiration, its origin is deceptive and of Satan, for God has not sent its bearers. It is not given to one man while passing by the leading workers.

A lukewarm church that has had opportunity to hear and receive truth and has united with the commandment-keeping people, yet has no more vitality and consecration than the nominal churches, stands in the same disfavor with God as those fallen churches become the dwelling of devils and every foul, unclean, and hateful influence. Such will receive of the plagues just as surely as the churches that oppose the law, and only those sanctified through the truth will compose the royal family in the heavenly mansions prepared for those that love Him and keep His commandments.

Satan secretly summons evil men and evil angels together in a corrupt union, binding men in bundles and claiming the world on his side, to make void God's law, trample the standard of righteousness, and gratify a world at enmity with God. The contest will be decided over the Sabbath question agitating the whole world, even in the land of boasted freedom where religious liberty will come to an end, while he lulls those who know the truth into fatal security with peace and safety. Those who love God keep the commandments and the faith of Jesus, and watchmen and people must give the trumpet a certain sound and warn before sudden destruction falls.

Causes and Corrupt Condition

Babylon fell through errors, sins, and rejection of heaven-sent truth, and continued rejection darkens minds, hardens hearts, and gives rejecters over to delusion. Contempt for Christ's Word and people and defiance of warnings leads to trampling a precept of the Decalogue and persecuting those who honor it. The coming exposure names her sins as union of church and state to enforce observances by civil authority, the inroads of Spiritualism, and the rapid growth of papal power, and when guilt is full destruction is near.

Her wine is false doctrine, exalting a false and spurious Sabbath above the Sabbath blessed and sanctified by Jehovah in the fourth commandment, teaching the natural immortality of the soul first lied by Satan to Eve in Eden, and many kindred errors teaching human commandments as doctrine, with kings, merchants, rulers, and religious teachers in corrupt harmony. Tearing down the seventh-day Sabbath, God's memorial of creation identifying the true God, and denying the Sabbath instituted by God to reverence a man-made idol Sunday sabbath in opposition to the third angel's message marks the fallen Babylon denounced. Proclaiming God's law abolished proves the fall, since sin is transgression of law and to deny law is to deny sin. The carnal mind in enmity against God throws off obedience, slips into lawlessness and crime, shelters revolting sins under Christianity, whitewashes iniquity while steeped in gross vice, and cooperates with the adversary while talking of pure religious liberty.

Acceptance of Spiritualism removes restraint on sinful desire, makes religious profession a cover for grave wrongdoing, and opens the way to seducing spirits, doctrines of devils, and the influence and control of evil angels within the churches. Joining the church to the world in a bond of unity corrupts it into a holder of uncleanness and hatefulness, like a cage of every unclean and hateful bird, through gradual departure, assimilation to the world, and withdrawal of heaven's light. A counterfeit revival before the final judgments will appear as God's blessing poured out but comes from another spirit, extending Satan's deceptive influence across the Christian world.

After Jesus leaves the holy place and enters beyond the second veil, the churches become filled with evil angels and vile conduct beneath profession, with selfishness, fraud, deceit, pride, and other sins concealed by religion, making worship unacceptable and bringing threatened wrath. Mystic Babylon fallen from high estate becomes a persecuting power wholly given over to evil in earth's closing scenes. The foul spirits and unclean birds portray the wicked character and seductive influence of worldly powers distinguished for persecution, whose wrath targets those keeping God's commandments and the faith of Jesus, and it warns truth-receivers how dangerous it is to link with secret societies or join in any way with commandment-breakers.

In nominal churches the verse depicts moral corruption including sexual immorality as evidence of degradation and exposure to wrath. Where licentiousness, unlawful intimacy, unholy practices, coveting neighbors' wives, and breaking the seventh commandment, especially by ministers, are tolerated, the people become a sister to fallen Babylon and must be aroused, cleansed, and cured by repentance or they will not be clear.

Repetition and Prophetic Timing

The cry repeats the second angel's 1844 announcement that Babylon is fallen, now given again with added emphasis on the corruptions that have entered the religious organizations represented by Babylon since 1844. Its repetition is joined to the repetition of the first message proclaiming the second advent of Christ to the world. It is proclaimed with power from the angel having great power, who lightens the whole earth with divine glory, and that power is given to those who follow the Lamb whithersoever He goes. Continued rejection of truth darkens minds and hardens hearts and gives over rejecters to delusion, while contempt for Christ's Word and people and defiance of warnings leads to trampling a precept of the Decalogue and persecuting those who honor it. As churches accept Spiritualism, restraint on sinful desire is removed, religious profession becomes a cover for grave wrongdoing, and belief in manifestations opens the way to seducing spirits, doctrines of devils, and the influence and control of evil angels within the churches.

The full and final fall comes when the church, by rejecting the threefold warning of Revelation 14:6-12, fully reaches the condition foretold by the second angel. As Babylon departs further from truth and allies more closely with the world its spiritual darkness deepens, while God's true followers still within it become increasingly distinct. The final call to separate from its communion comes when rejecters are given over to delusion, and then light reaches open hearts and all who are open to truth heed it. The proclamation is the loud cry that lightens the earth, the last message of mercy and last call to the churches now to be given, swelling the third angel's message. The other angel coming down represents this giving of the loud cry by those preparing to proclaim with a mighty strong voice the fall of Babylon and its corrupt condition, bringing help to all who love God and obey His law. Its glory helps prepare God's people to endure the coming hour of temptation and strengthens them to proclaim the warning fearlessly.

It will be fulfilled after the truth has been proclaimed as a witness to all nations, at a time when every power of evil is at work. Then minds are confused by many voices claiming Christ and truth and great light from God, landmarks are removed and pillars of faith are attacked, and a more decided effort is made to exalt the false sabbath to supplant the day God blessed and sanctified and to cast contempt upon God Himself. That false sabbath is enforced by an oppressive law, while Satan and his angels work wide-awake and intensely through human agencies with lying wonders to obliterate the knowledge of God. Then the mighty angel that lightens the earth with his glory proclaims the fall of Babylon and calls upon God's people to forsake her. It belongs with Revelation 12 to 18 now being fulfilled, standing just before Revelation 19. Then the beast and the false prophet are taken and cast into a lake of fire, the dragon who instigated the great rebellion is bound and cast into the bottomless pit for a thousand years, the wicked are resurrected and Satan and all the wicked are finally destroyed, and Christ triumphs and reigns on this earth.

Given from God in solemn warning and made known by Christ Himself to John on Patmos on the Isle of Patmos, the chapter with Revelation 3, Revelation 16:13-21, Revelation 21, and Revelation 22 concerns the last events of earth's history and the perils of the last days now upon us. It stands between two parties in the world, the loyal and those under the prince of darkness, with satanic and fallen evil angels constantly at work in all deceivableness of unrighteousness to deceive if possible the very elect and to keep minds confused, so that confusion can be death unto death. The solemn events belong to a chain whose first link is connected with Eden, the world having been taken captive through centuries of satanic working in extravagance, selfishness, and heresy that will not yield without struggle. The crisis right upon the world pits the far-reaching influence of deception against truth, with Satan coming down with power and signs and lying wonders to deceive those who dwell on earth if possible the very elect, requiring knowledge of truth not paralyzed but energized. At that appointed testing time God's servants repeat with force to all churches and to bewildered people the messages of 1840 to 1844 seen in 1843 and 1844, declaring from fulfilled prophecy and eternal principles what is to take place and showing the end of all things is at hand. God confirms the testimony of those who give it, Daniel will stand in his lot to give his testimony, and only building upon the Rock withstands the storm of test and trial.

The mighty angel's work culminates when Christ comes with power and great glory, with His own glory and the Father's glory and with all the holy angels, proving that Heaven rules. While all the world is plunged in darkness there will be light in every dwelling of the saints catching the first light of His second appearing, and the pure in heart shall see God. The message triumphs while preparing every mind to decide for or against truth, and those not walking in its light will not triumph with it. At the same time Satan and evil angels unite with evil men to make void God's unchangeable law in the face of convincing evidence that it is eternal, and the words are to be fulfilled soon when earth's inhabitants face their final test. The loud cry comes when some rulers acting as God's agents receive truth and endure with the saints through the time of trouble. While Christ's restraining Spirit remains God limits rulers and uses some to resist Satan, but when He leaves the most holy place restraint is withdrawn, evil angels gain control, and Satan directs laws so oppressive that none would be saved unless the time is shortened.

The final proclamation is given when every form of evil springs into intense activity, when evil angels unite with evil men of centuries of experience in deception, when all the world is on one side or the other, and when the battle of Armageddon is to be fought. It requires being sustained by God's power, being wide awake, being as wise virgins having oil in vessels with lamps supplied by grace and the Holy Ghost, and being directed by the Captain of the Lord's host at the head of heaven's angels. The chapter records scenes about to take place near earth's close, the next great event after the final warning to all nations given with utmost decisiveness, followed by judgment making Babylon a dwelling for evil, and each verse should be read carefully for its light. Its words will be fulfilled when the Lord arises to shake terribly the earth, when terrible scenes take place beyond imagination and massive story-upon-story buildings are thrown down by God's turning and overturning power, so that one word or touch brings destruction. The whole chapter warns of what is coming, including retribution where costly fireproof buildings become ashes like Sodom, wealth and vessels with human freight sink, pride and fraudulent treasure are buried, widows and orphans are avenged, sorrow no human balm can heal comes, and monuments crumble even before the last destruction, causing readers to fear and tremble.

The verse is not a specific prediction that New York will be destroyed by a tidal wave and gives no particular forecast for that city. Its scenes of city destruction display God's power because of sin, rebuke abused privilege and wrongs to fellow men, call to amends and obedience, and warn against indifferent rebuilding of greater structures. The fall is already being fulfilled in the churches and the world as the moral fall of Babylon become the habitation of devils and hold of every foul spirit and cage of every unclean and hateful bird. Its fulfillment is now on the eve of accomplishment in the greatest work ever witnessed, borne by heaven's angels for commandment-keepers unto judgment, and its scenes will take place in the near future in the great cities. The warning must be proclaimed clearly and urgently now because Scripture is to be fulfilled and the last test soon comes. It is testing truth and the last call of mercy to be sounded fully to all and read and understood by all, while God in long forbearance holds back judgments until those unreached hear. It foretells the coming day of God's wrath as awful destruction, concerning the wickedness existing in the world today and the importance of obeying God's law.

Union with Angels Messages

Revelation 18:2 is the loud cry of the third angel's message, given by God to be sounded with great power as the final warning against the beast and his image. It gathers up the proclamations of the first and second angels and intensifies them, repeating the first, second, and third angels' messages together in the message of the other angel, and it carries the call to come out so as not to partake of sins or receive plagues. The other angel coming down from heaven represents the giving of this loud cry by those who are preparing to proclaim with a mighty strong voice the fall of Babylon and its corrupt condition. That proclamation will lighten the whole earth with the glory of God and will bring help to all who love God and obey His law.

The verse is the second angel's message to be repeated, announcing the fall and the dwelling of devils and every foul and unclean spirit. Its repetition joins the repetition of the first message proclaiming the second advent of Christ to the world. Power from the angel having great power is given to those who follow the Lamb whithersoever He goes, the whole earth is lightened with the glory of the Lord, the pure in heart shall see God, and the prophecy will be fulfilled when Christ comes with power and great glory, with His own glory and the Father's glory and all the holy angels, while light is in every dwelling of the saints amid world darkness. The substance of the second angel given again in earth's closing days by the other angel who lightens the earth with his glory blends into one with the third angel's message, under which God's people keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. It joins the faith of Jesus to the commandments, lives to exert power upon religious experience while time lasts, deepens and widens through schools, publishing houses, and health institutions as God's instrumentalities to warn that Christ is coming the second time with power and great glory, and exposes the wine as false doctrines giving a false Sabbath instead of the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, repeating Satan's lie to Eve in Eden about natural immortality of the soul, with many kindred errors teaching the commandments of men as doctrines.

The power of the first and second proclamations is concentrated in the third, bound up with Revelation 18:2 as a life-and-death message to be presented in all its telling force as the great power of God. The commandments of God and the faith of Jesus are lifted up as the standard, not in an indefinite, tame and voiceless manner but with expectation of the demonstration of the Spirit to convict and convert, to be dwelt on, read, explained and enforced as aggressive warfare while tremendous issues are right upon them, separating from the churches a people who will stand upon the platform of eternal truth. The third angel's message swelling into the loud cry is attended by great power and glory under the latter rain, the refreshing from the presence of the Lord. God's people shine with heaven's light, their faces shining with its glory, revived and strengthened to pass through trouble, while honest hearers previously hindered eagerly accept despite family opposition and even above life.

The loud cry brings division and shaking, leaving some behind while others take their place among truth-holders. Some receive the mighty angel's light sent to warn inhabitants of earth to prepare for Jesus' second coming, glorify God, withdraw from the world and unite together, while others resist it. The Laodicean message exposes backsliding and leads to zealous repentance to prepare God's people to receive Jesus' presence and be fitted for the loud cry, a work not completed in only a few months. The message carries the Sabbath as the great test for this time, testing all the world so those in darkness of error about the fourth-commandment Sabbath understand. It shows the seventh day to be the seal of the living God, exposes what to expect from the papal power that voided the law as Protestant churches grasp its hand, contains the great test to be given with solemn sense of its importance for conversion of souls, and must go with power and not tamely through every voice raised in cities, camp-meetings, and every opportunity by battle-equipped, character-transformed messengers.

The loud cry with its special message will be heard when the Sabbath question presses to the front and demands attention, where people are unfamiliar with the Scriptures and ministers advance inconsistent doctrines having appearance of sound doctrine to get rid of the Sabbath, and when souls are broken up and foundationless every jot of precious truth is needed for decision. The angel's announcement is part of the movement swelling the third message into the loud cry before Babylon's impending destruction, arresting leading men so some join God's people through trouble. It belongs to the borders of the greatest event in history when the papacy appears in power and trouble is near, warning against sleep, and is to be proclaimed with a loud voice meaning increased power as the great final test approaches, presented clearly and understandably in all it includes. The fall proclaimed a second time by the other angel following the third belongs to the third message in clear definite terms as the prominent warning for this time, holding fast past truth development, to be carried to the churches with best plans, made intelligible to reasoning minds, and presented to command attention.

The verse is the louder, more explicit third message following the first angel's hour of judgment and the second angel's fall of mystic Babylon, warning all co-workers in anti-Christian apostasy. The whole chapter is full of importance to every human agent and will bear close searching, denouncing those who deny the Sabbath instituted by God, trample the commandments, and reverence a man-made idol Sunday sabbath in opposition to the third message. The last call to fallen churches at the closing of mercy's last message is fulfilled when great power comes to the church, uniting the third message with the second and proclaimed with great power in large and small cities because time is short to prepare a people for the King. Health reform is as closely joined to the loud cry as hand to arm and must advance with ministers and people in concert through individual work none can do for another. Presentation of evils of flesh meats, tea, coffee, and rich unhealthful foods, with cleansing of appetite, self-denial, and temperance, is to bring conversion and sanctification with increasing importance till the close, united to the commandments and testimony of Jesus without standing apart or taking its place, requiring a perfected converted people feeling the Spirit's power.

Call to Come Out

The fall announced is joined to the call in verse 4 to come out of her, that God's people may not share in her sins nor receive of her plagues. The warning is to be proclaimed clearly, distinctly, urgently and fully as part of the final threefold warning to the world and the preparation to meet God, and its words are to be fulfilled in view of coming judgment, for God remembers her sins. It applies to the fallen churches because many there are God-fearing and honest in heart, and they will recognize the gospel when it is presented simply from God's Word in its beauty and simplicity. It is given because God has faithful people in those churches who must be called out, not because all there are lawless and sinful.

God still has many thousands in Babylon who have not yielded to apostasy, honest, God-fearing men and women gasping for a breath of heavenly life. The giving of this message proves that not all in the world are lawless and sinful. God will add men of ability and influence to the ranks of His people to act their part in warning them. Though her guilt is full and destruction is near, the faithful within must be called out before judgments fall, and this announcement joins the third angel's message in warning the world.

Before the plagues are poured out, ministers and people will be called out of the fallen churches. Before the loud cry, Satan will stir religious excitement in those fallen bodies, so that those who rejected truth think God is working among them and the honest may be deceived. When the light shines, the honest will leave the fallen churches and join the remnant. The final call comes when those rejecting truth are given over to delusion and Babylon departs further from truth and allies more closely with the world, deepening in darkness while true followers within become more distinct. Then light reaches open hearts, and God's people still in Babylon separate from its communion.

The declaration sharply distinguishes God's commandment-keeping people from worshipers of false gods, calling them to leave Babylon and not share her sins or plagues. In the setting of a coming test over God's commands versus human commands, it warns against yielding to worldly religious demands, including observance of a false sabbath. The cry is made by the other angel following the third, whose message unites with the third angel's message as the last call and warning to mystic Babylon, the churches become corrupt, declaring the outcome for all refusing loyalty to God and His commandments. The warning is to be sounded inside these religious bodies and joins the call for God's people in them to come out. In the closing gospel work God's glory illuminates the earth through a powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit, portraying Babylon as profoundly corrupt and under evil power as a dwelling of demons and refuge for foul spirits and unclean hateful birds. In connection with coming out, God's people leave association with worldlings and evildoers and stand against the powers of darkness.

Those who believe the warning show they have come out by partaking not of her sins so they receive not her plagues, with the work of preparation beginning in every family. They walk in the light as Christ is in the light, cherish no idols, and allow nothing to engross mind or affections to shut out the bright rays of the Sun of Righteousness going before them, with the glory of the Lord as rereward. The time has now come for all God's people to be gathered into one company as His special people keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. The prophecies of Daniel and Revelation contain the message for this time and must be dwelt upon, the world must be warned with this call to the churches, and there must be decided reformation among the churches. Leaving old mystic Babylon sounds the jubilee and goes together with telling people the Lord is coming with power and great glory.

Because all nations shared her fornication and drank the wine of it, kings joined her, merchants grew rich through her luxury and delicacies, sins reached unto heaven and God remembered iniquities, the people must separate to escape sharing sins and receiving plagues. The message of the other angel repeats the first, second, and third angels' messages with great power lighting the earth, and each verse of the chapter is to be read carefully for its light on this fall. It is no inferior matter Satan wants silenced, for it carries doubled retribution for her works, torment and sorrow for her pride, and sudden destruction by fire with one-day plagues of death, mourning, and famine and utter burning by the strong Lord God who judges her. Those faithful and true are called out at the time following the vision of those slain for the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus, and the testing message for this time must be carried to imperiled souls without turning aside for commercial inducement. The condition described is the danger of poor souls under deceptive combined human and satanic agencies who rejected the Lord's Word and fell into Satan's snare, and fallen mystic Babylon become a persecuting power wholly given over to evil makes commandment-keepers with the faith of Jesus the object of her wrath. The verse therefore warns those who received truth how dangerous it is to link with secret societies or join in any way with those who do not keep God's commandments.

Proclaiming and Applying Message

The cry is a decided message for an age of apostasy calling for reformatory action, attended by the light and glory of God that lightens the earth with continuing shine rather than a lightning flash that leaves only darkness. Its very earnestness and power credentials it as a voice from the throne of God, given with distinctness proportioned to its importance. It carries forward the light that shone through past messengers whose protest distinguished Protestants, who remain Protestants in the first, second, and third angels' messages by bearing decided testimony without daubing with untempered mortar to secure reformation in the religious churches. It is to uplift the standard of Christianity left to trail in the dust, to witness for the downtrodden law in every town and city, and to share Christ's work of reform with His spirit and His special care for the suffering and oppressed.

It is present truth for this time, joined to the third angel's message as the last great testing truth that sanctifies through the truth. It is to be patiently unfolded and proclaimed with all power and efficiency, with a loud voice by the human agencies God has chosen, and minds are not to be diverted into hindering lines, for the world is not to be left in darkness. It is the last work to be done for the world, to prepare a people to stand in the great day of God which is fast coming with stealthy, awful dread. It is a wonderful message and note of warning that must go with power and not in a tame and unimpressive way, carrying the Sabbath truth which is the great testing truth for this time and belongs with the third angel's message to be given with power. Every voice should now be raised in giving it in the cities, at camp meetings, and at every opportunity, by those equipped for the battle and transformed in character that they may stand the test.

It is the message of the mighty angel who lightens the earth with his glory, announcing Babylon's fall into a dwelling for devils and foul spirits, and it is no soft, smooth message but words calculated to stir hearts to their very depths. It is to be sounded by human agencies cooperating with divine instrumentalities, and under the heavenly endowment of the Holy Spirit it will bring an ingathering like Pentecost, when thousands were converted in a day. It shows the second call to the churches that will soon be made in coming stormy times, reviving the first, second, and third angels' messages to be proclaimed with great power under the unction of the Holy Spirit. As God's representatives believers must take hold of this work, keep these truths before the people, do the work intelligently, and wake up so the day of the Lord does not come upon them as a thief in the night.

It gives what God's workers must meet people where they are to give, crying mightily with a strong voice that Babylon the great is fallen into the habitation of devils and every foul and unclean spirit. It belongs with the everlasting gospel to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people and is to arouse God's people from listlessness to missionary work that shows truth uplifts and saves, developing every God-given capability to win souls to Christ. Together with Revelation 18:1 it forms a message containing the great test for the people, to be given with a solemn sense of its importance so it can do its special work in the conversion of souls. It is part of the last warning to be given in the simplicity of Christ's precious words as waters of salvation to thirsting souls, while showing that the signs predicting Christ's second coming are rapidly fulfilling and calling God's people to come out of Babylon so they will not share her sins or receive her plagues, a duty requiring full wakefulness. It belongs to a definite message proclaimed with a loud cry to bring souls to conversion and sanctification and to go forth with increasing importance until the close of time.

Carrying the last warning to the cities requires personal house-to-house work opening the Scriptures and praying, establishing missions, training workers, and holding decided efforts without delay for those nearby who have not heard, since Babylon means the fallen churches where many honest-hearted people still are but ready to respond and leave. The loud cry must soon be heard everywhere, with the Lord raising up men as His ambassadors to stand on higher ground and proclaim the warning with a loud voice, working in many places with nothing needless in the plans, no false moves, and messengers fully sanctified whose speech contains no oddity that would detract from interest. The message of truth must go forth with a loud cry to all the world, and more laborers are needed in the harvest field to carry it. Ordinary workers called from the plow, from the carpenter's bench, and from other lines of common work will give the warning throughout the churches to the world while the Lord cuts His great work short in righteousness, prepared by keeping Christ's words, learning of Christ the great Teacher, and obeying His statutes and commandments to become laborers together with God.

The church is to arise and shine because the Lord's glory has risen upon her, taking part in this final work through God's power as the mighty angel proclaims Babylon's fall while the earth is lightened with glory. The mighty angel's announcement stands within the final work of preparing a people for the last days, as his glory lights the earth and the church is called to awaken and shine with the Lord's glory. When the earth is lighted with that glory the religious elements good and evil awake from slumber and the armies of the living God take the field, while the powers of evil do not yield without struggle and Providence acts its part in the battle of Armageddon connected with the pouring out of the seventh vial.

At the close of earth's history, just before the Lord comes, every church passes through a refining winnowing because wicked men who do not love the truth are among God's people. The church must arise and put on beautiful garments, the righteousness of Christ, and be transformed in character. Then it is seen who are vessels unto honor, who receive the latter rain and reflect Christ, while every soul who keeps sinning against the light now shining will be blinded and accept delusions, requiring faithful watchmen who do not slumber to declare the time of night. It is the last loud cry of warning truth to be given now to arouse the many slumbering souls standing on the very verge of great and awful events soon to take place. Those giving it work in companionship of holy angels and with attestation by the power of the eternal heavenly King, and its proclamation makes known to all who has taken stand with the Prince of heaven and proved faithful.

During the loud cry those who have held the beginning of their confidence firm unto the end will be wide-awake, and the church, aided by the providential interpositions of her exalted Lord, will diffuse the knowledge of salvation so abundantly that light is communicated to every city and town, the earth is filled with the knowledge of salvation, and present truth flashes everywhere through intensely active agencies crowned with success by the renewing Spirit. God directs this final work in ways beyond human planning, and efforts to restrict or control it can oppose its progress. The message will advance under God's direction in ways contrary to human plans, and those who try to control or restrict it may fail to recognize God's work. Those who can help must be roused to duty now or they will not recognize God's work then, but will want to narrow and bind His work to meet narrow ideas, whereas the Lord will work in this last work out of the common order and contrary to human planning. God Himself takes the reins and carries the work forward out of the common order and contrary to human planning, surprising workers by simple means to bring about and perfect righteousness, while those wanting to control movements and workers counted good need to draw nigh to God, receive the divine touch, drink more deeply and continuously at living water to discern His work, and erring workers should be given chance to correct errors and learn caution.

Its message must be proclaimed boldly, for Satan can mix deception with truth and promote side issues that distract from the final test, and making work among the lowest class the all-absorbing focus can consume strength needed to prepare a people for last-day dangers. Truth for this time must be presented in no measured terms but with boldness and power, with no toning down and no muffling, strengthening and confirming the third angel's message which is a life-and-death question with everything at stake. Satan has devised a state of things to bind about its proclamation, mingling deceptions with truth to create side issues turning attention from the great issue, the test to be brought upon God's people in these last days. False interpretations and a spurious loud cry will try to divert people from the true prophecy of the loud cry of the third angel's message soon to be heard lightening the earth with God's glory. Health principles must be carried openly united to the worldwide proclamation without replacing it, and the message is to be carried openly to people, not kept apart from them.

It presents a powerful message from heaven lighting the earth and declaring Babylon fallen into a dwelling of evil spirits and unclean things, a clear trumpet call from God whose reception requires recognizing heaven's light even when it conflicts with one's own ideas, since rejecting it for that reason repeats refusal to receive Christ. The whole earth is to be lighted with the mighty angel's glory assisting the third angel, proclaimed by a people crying its very words aloud in a future work shown on Patmos that no man can stop. Receiving it requires abandoning unbelief, encouraging faith by hearing God's Word, searching Scriptures apart from human opinion, being governed by the Bible, and seeking God in prayer not to be deceived, because taking hold of truth is of great consequence for salvation and spiritual prosperity. In prevailing iniquity those taking stand to stem the current and carry the message with a loud cry will have reproach and persecution, for those not loving truth do not want to hear it, truth is aggressive and its carriers meet opposition. They cannot submit to laws and powers when these oppose God but must obey God rather than man, continuing to proclaim and let light shine wherever they are even when forbidden and thrust into prison, and obedience in the face of the world brings them into strait places because the whole world will not be in harmony with the law.

Faithful sentinels must recognize their position as truth proclaimed separates people, avoiding joining the world in a way that confuses spiritual discernment. It is to be given plainly, distinctly, and decidedly that churches claiming to be Christian have fallen and need thorough reformation, having become the habitation of devils, the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. It requires God's chosen to be separate from the world and popular churches, to represent Christ daily, refuse worldly popularity and customs, and show in obedient lives the superiority God gives to those loyal to His commandments. It belongs to a last-day message calling God's people to a work awakening the world, giving people in the churches opportunity to recognize they are not walking in truth, with truth not mingled with error and each case decided by obedience or disobedience. Those accusing others of being Babylon while fostering suspicion, division, and opposition without cause become Babylon themselves.

The picture of habitation of devils and cage of unclean birds applies to the misused human body that should be God's temple, made unfit through abuse, so people should learn how their bodies work and practice self-denial and temperance. God as Master Architect superintends every bodily function day by day to make a glorious temple for Himself, and man must become intelligent about the machinery of his body, for staying ignorant of the house he lives in, failing to know God and His miracle-working power, abusing God's building, and failing in self-denial and temperance makes God's temple the habitation of devils, the hold of every foul spirit, and the cage of every unclean and hateful bird. Sensual indulgence does this to the soul, for licentiousness opens to idolatry and those dishonoring God's image and defiling His temple in their persons stop at no dishonor to gratify depraved desire. Gratifying animal propensities weakens mind and debases soul, benumbing moral and intellectual powers so the slave of passion cannot realize sacred obligation of law, appreciate atonement, or value the soul, while goodness, purity, truth, reverence, love for sacred things, and holy affections linking men with heaven are consumed in lust, leaving a blackened desolate waste where evil spirits dwell and foul impurity lodges, dragging image-bearers to brutish level.

Becoming a cage of every unclean and hateful bird describes a religious publishing office established by sacrifice fast becoming corrupt through unjust plans, dishonest selfish dealing, overbearing control, departure from veracity, and misrepresentation of God's character. The condition is decided by God weighing every motive and action, involving clouded discernment and lost spiritual eyesight from deliberate choice of darkness rather than light, so increase of light cannot cure it and God does not acknowledge the wrongdoers as workers together with Him. Division weakening faith and courage with rooted unbelief brings a Babylon-like condition among God's people filled with evil and unclean things. A widespread interest in taking hold of the Sabbath like that of 1842-1844 shows the loud cry is to be given now, requiring immediate provision of a church to gather accepters. The loud cry of Revelation 18:1-4 is to be heard in Greater New York, for God designs that wicked city shall be stirred, has a message for it, will arouse it and provide means, for He knows what is best.

Christ's true followers understanding the angel's world-lightening call remain kind, tender, and pitiful, denying self and taking up the cross to follow Him rather than eating and drinking with the drunken and practicing principles of Satan's agents who spared not saints' blood, and many will heed that call and realize the meaning of the angel's work. The angel's work lightens the whole earth with glory as he gives the loud announcement many will heed, which Christ's true followers are to understand while remaining kind, tender, and pitiful. God's people must be aroused to proclaim present truth everywhere with unprecedented power and loud voice in the closing work of the third angel's message, accepting the great responsibility it lays on every recipient instead of holding theory alone, showing faith by works. The world must be prepared for this loud cry, which God declares shall be cut short in righteousness.
