Christ on a White Horse Strikes Sin with a Swordby davidwooten

Revelation 19:14

And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

The armies in heaven are the holy angels, a vast unnumbered host clothed in fine linen white and clean who follow Christ upon white horses as He leaves heaven in royal glory. He comes as Faithful and True, the Word of God, KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS, in His own glory and the glory of the Father as conqueror and Judge of the living and the dead. He comes to judge and make war in righteousness, smiting the nations with the sharp sword of His mouth and ruling them with a rod of iron while treading the winepress of the fierceness of the wrath of Almighty God. This is the soon-coming battle of Armageddon, when the beast and the false prophet with the kings of the earth and their armies gathered against Him are defeated and cast into the lake of fire, bringing deliverance to the faithful and terror to the wicked. Revelation 18 and 19 are testing truths and the last warning of mercy for this time, calling all to close relation with God, pardon and cleansing of sin, and readiness before He comes crowned with glory to judge.

Heaven's Armies with Christ

The armies in heaven are the holy angels, a vast, unnumbered throng that follow Jesus and escort Him at His return. They attend Him with celestial songs and music, with songs of majesty and might and triumph. He comes in royal glory and majesty and power as a mighty conqueror, as conqueror of heaven and earth, and as judge of the living and the dead. His coming in glory to conquer brings deliverance for the faithful and terror to the wicked.

He comes as Faithful and True, the Word of God, KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS, to judge and make war in righteousness. He comes in His own glory and the glory of the Father, with the armies of heaven following Him upon white horses. With Him is a sharp sword proceeding from His mouth to smite the nations and rule them with a rod of iron, while He treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

The fine linen, white and clean, worn by heaven's armies is the imperishable inward beauty of a meek and quiet spirit. It is the outward sign of holiness and inner peace, and in its heavenly fulfillment it is the badge of admission to the King's palace.

At His coming He is crowned with glory, with a crown within a crown upon His sacred head. He is clothed in a robe whiter than snow, in a garment of the whitest white such as no fuller on earth can whiten, with feet like fine brass and girded about the breast with a golden girdle. His searching eye is as a flame of fire, burning into the souls of His enemies and searching all creation.

The scene takes place as He leaves heaven in kingly glory. It is after mercy's work and His intercession for sinners have ended, while the plagues are falling.

Armageddon and Final Judgment

The verse shows the soon-to-be-fought battle of Armageddon, when He on whose vesture is written King of kings and Lord of lords leads forth the armies of heaven following Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen clean and white. The armies of the living God take the field in that battle, awakening to action when the earth is lighted with the glory of the angel of Revelation 18, as the powers of good and evil emerge from slumber during the events connected with the seventh vial. He comes as Faithful and True to judge and make war in righteousness, with the armies in heaven following Him on white horses and dressed in clean white linen.

He comes with His heavenly host to execute the fierceness of the wrath of Almighty God against the nations, with a sharp sword proceeding from His mouth to smite the nations and rule them with a rod of iron while treading the winepress of wrath. The beast, the false prophet, and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered to fight Him face defeat, with the beast and false prophet taken and cast into the lake of fire. That destruction stands before the dragon's thousand-year confinement and the later resurrection and final destruction of the wicked, leading to Christ's final triumph and reign.

His coming is God's vengeance for His persecuted children who were falsely accused, fettered and burned. Those who carried out the spirit and purposes of Satan by causing pain to human beings and compelling men to transgress the law God commanded all to obey will suffer in proportion as they caused suffering and will perish, slain by the sword from Christ's mouth. The Lord comes from heaven before long to vindicate His authority and the laws of His kingdom, coming in His own glory and the glory of the Father escorted by the armies of heaven.

Then the men who mocked, arrayed, struck and degraded Him will see Him as He is and understand what is comprehended in the wrath of the Lamb, with the very scene they enacted standing before them in living, speaking symbols showing the value of the soul and the Christlike character they might have obtained and did not. His majestic coming in glory to conquer, escorted by a holy company of angels, brings deliverance for the faithful and terror to the wicked.

Warning and Readiness Call

Revelation 18 and 19 hold testing truths for this time that must be read and understood by all. They contain the last call of mercy to be given more fully to the world as a message of warning to all. God shows mercy by long forbearance in holding back His judgments until that warning has been sounded to those who have not yet heard.

The chapter warns those who enforce worship of the beast and compel others to do evil. God remembers the persecution Christians endure at their hands. Against them Christ's heavenly army follows Him, while the beast, the false prophet, and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered against Him face defeat.

The chapter will soon be fulfilled as a last-day event. Its setting as a passage about future events calls for readiness through close relation with God, growing in grace, and looking to Jesus for help. Readiness means having sins pardoned and cleansed, because He searches all creation as He comes crowned with glory to judge. He comes crowned with glory, clothed in a robe whiter than snow, with feet like fine brass, and bearing the title King of kings and Lord of lords.
