Revelation 19:5
And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great.
A voice comes out of the throne calling all God's servants and all who fear Him, both small and great, to praise God with reverent fear because He is worthy of the praise. The call sounds amid heaven's worship after His judgments are declared true and righteous in judging Babylon and avenging the blood of His servants, and it leads into praise that the Lord God omnipotent reigns. It belongs to the celebration that His reign is come and the marriage of the Lamb is come, with His wife made ready in fine linen which is the righteousness of the saints. The truths of Revelation 18 and 19 are testing truths and the last call of mercy and warning to be given more fully and understood by all, and the messages of the nineteenth chapter are for the closing scenes of this earth's history that every minister must discern and give now. Those who answer the call stand on Christ's side as co-laborers honoring Him, giving true harmony in proclaiming the last message of warning while keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.
Setting in Revelation
A voice sounds out from the throne summoning every servant of God and everyone who fears Him, small and great alike, to praise God and honor Him with reverent fear, for He alone is worthy of that praise. This summons belongs to heaven's worship and is answered by a great multitude whose voice is as many waters and mighty thunderings, joining in true harmony rather than the false harmony that exalts human agencies against God's work and repudiates His law. The servants thus called are those proclaiming the last message of warning and keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, and their praise swells at the time when the blessed hope is fulfilled and the redeemed are united with Christ at His coming.
The call sounds after God's judgments have been declared true and righteous in judging the corrupting power and Babylon, the great whore who corrupted the earth, and in avenging the blood of His servants at her hand. The heavenly multitude and the twenty-four elders have already cried Alleluia over that just judgment and vindication, ascribing salvation and glory and honor and power to the Lord our God. From that vindication the call leads directly into the answering praise that the Lord God omnipotent reigns.
It belongs to the celebration that God's reign is come and that the marriage of the Lamb is come, with His wife made ready and granted fine linen clean and white. That linen is the righteousness of the saints, the kept garments of Christ's character, given to her who has made herself ready by being complete in Christ and changed from character to character into His image. Those called to the marriage supper of the Lamb are blessed, and these are the true sayings of God.
The same chapter pictures the beast and the false prophet cast into the lake of fire, followed by the binding of the dragon for a thousand years, then the resurrection of the wicked and the final destruction of Satan and the wicked, issuing in Christ's triumph and reign on earth. The call comes after the final judgment when the dead small and great stand before God and are judged out of the books according to their works. Then the sea gives up the dead in it, and death and hell give up their dead, and death and hell are cast into the lake of fire which is the second death, and whoever is not found written in the book of life is cast into the lake of fire, as time with its burden of record passes into eternity.
It belongs also to heaven's triumph in which angels and redeemed saints rejoice because the devil can no longer tempt or trouble them, and the inhabitants of other worlds are delivered from his presence and temptations. As the redeemed travel toward the New Jerusalem they shout alleluia and raise grateful praise, joining universal worship.
Last-Day Warning Message
The truths of Revelation 18 and 19 are testing truths for this time, the last call of mercy and message of warning to be sounded to all. They are to be given more fully to the world and to be read and understood by all, as a warning for the time when God's judgments are near. God in mercy shows long forbearance and holds back His judgments until all have heard. The passage is a living reality whose fulfillment will come soon, linked with the last-day calamities pictured in Revelation 18. The chapter is certain to be fulfilled.
The messages of the nineteenth chapter are for the closing scenes of this earth's history, and every minister must discern them and give them now. Those who occupy the position of watchmen must give the trumpet a certain sound instead of quieting souls to sleep. To pass along without discerning and giving them results in eternal loss. The voice from the throne calling all God's servants and all who fear Him, small and great, to praise Him gives reason to regard the events of the last days without gloom or sadness. It calls to be in harmony with heaven as God prepares a people to stand on the day of the Lord.
Servants Who Praise God
Answering the call to praise God puts those who answer on Christ's side as fellow workers whose aim is to honor and glorify the Savior. The praise they give is true harmony, in contrast to a false harmony that lifts up human agencies against God's work and rejects His law. Those servants are the ones proclaiming the last message of warning while keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, and their praise joins the great multitude rejoicing that the Lord God omnipotent reigns and that the marriage of the Lamb is come with His wife made ready in fine linen clean and white.
That praise swells when the blessed hope is fulfilled and the redeemed are united with Christ at His coming. His wife has made herself ready by being complete in Christ and changed from character to character into His image, and she is granted fine linen clean and white which is the righteousness of the saints, the kept garments of Christ's character. Those called to the marriage supper of the Lamb are blessed, and these are the true sayings of God. The call is thus linked with the satisfied outcome of Christ's work and the completion of prophetic history.
This praise belongs to heaven's song of thanksgiving and honor to the Father and the Son. The unsanctified have never learned it and cannot enjoy it because it is out of harmony with their tastes and desires. Since the wicked are raised with the tastes, habits, and characters formed during their probation, the song remains alien to their desires and unbearable to them, so they cannot enjoy heaven's companionship and worship. All who insult God by forcing the worship of the beast upon others have reason to fear, for seeking to compel people to do evil is a most heinous sin in His sight, and none of the persecutions Christians have suffered at the hands of those under the apostate's control will be overlooked or forgotten by God.
