Revelation 2:15

So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.

Revelation 2:15 stands in the last testimony given to John to write, coming as message after message to the churches and specifically within the message to Pergamos in Revelation 2 alongside the messages to Ephesus, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea. As part of those messages to the churches in Asia, the church names are symbolic of the Christian church in different periods of the Christian era, and the number seven indicates completeness. The messages therefore extend to the end of time and remain in force today, portraying conditions existing in the churches of the religious world now.

Their figures portray the state of God's professed people as wheat developing among tares, with truth standing on its own eternal basis in contrast with error. In these messages Christ weighs the character of all who take His name, keeping every individual under His supervision. He is acquainted with the thoughts and intents of the heart as well as every word and act, knowing all about the full religious experience and whom each person loves and serves, which calls for close self-examination.

This Revelation 2 message must be heeded in order to understand losing first love. Heeding it means seeking the Lord with the whole heart, respecting those who have borne the burden in the heat of the day, loving God supremely and neighbor as self, and humbling the heart before God. Then truth prospers and goes forth brightly as a burning lamp, and God can safely work with and for His people.
