This promise comes as part of the message Christ came from heaven to give John on the Isle of Patmos about the condition of the church, recorded in Revelation 1, 2, and 3. It was presented by the angel that talked with John concerning that condition. It is to be heeded.
It is spoken to those in Thyatira who have not accepted the false doctrine and have not known the depths of Satan. On them no other burden is laid except to hold fast what they already have till Christ comes. Thyatira itself was full of zeal and activity, but its charities and zeal were endangered by false teachers.
As part of the messages to the churches in Asia, it portrays the state of things existing in the churches of the religious world today. The names of the churches are symbolic of the Christian church in different periods of the Christian era, and the number seven indicates completeness, showing that the messages extend to the end of time and are in force today. Their figures are symbolic of God's professed people as wheat developing among tares, with truth standing on its own eternal basis in contrast with error. In these messages Christ searches the reins and the hearts, weighs the characters of those who have taken His name, and will give to every one according to works. Every individual is under His supervision, for He is acquainted with the thoughts and intents of the heart as well as every word and act, and He knows all about religious experience and whom each loves and serves.
The morning star is promised to the one who overcomes and keeps Christ's works to the end and remains faithful. Together with the morning star, the overcomer is given power over the nations to rule them with a rod of iron as Christ received of His Father, as the vessels of a potter broken to shivers. The morning star is given to the heart that recognizes Christ, with the call for him that has an ear to hear what the Spirit says to the churches. Recognizing His light brings victory, and faith is increased by using the voice to speak forth the praises of God.
This gift belongs to the faithful overcomer and is part of what Christ showed about these last days, to be closely and critically studied now and used as Christ designed. There is need of close self-examination, with prayer for wisdom not to have a name to live while dead and with wakefulness to see and speak intelligently about what is to be in this last remnant of time. That same danger from false teaching and worldly absorption exists today, so workers must not let worldly schemes and interests absorb them and let the work of the third angel's message languish. They are to come into line under Christ the true Watchman to comprehend and carry forward His progressive work to be established in many places, with aroused labor marked by far greater earnestness, faith and self-sacrifice under His constant care.
