Animals and Children Before the New JerusalemBible World

Revelation 21:1

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

The verse promises a renewed heaven and a renewed earth to take the place of the first heaven and first earth after they have passed away. There will be no more sea because human separation will end, for the sea now divides friends by a broad barrier, but in the new earth the redeemed will dwell together with no more partings. The new heaven and new earth appear at the close of the thousand years after the wicked dead are raised and destroyed, when the same fire that devours the wicked purifies the whole earth and sweeps away every stain of sin and mark of the curse. It will be the setting where God dwells with His people as their God, where tears, death, sorrow, crying and pain end, and where the earth is restored to the purity and beauty of Eden. It is the eternal inheritance of the saved, reserved for the obedient whose characters are transformed and purified in hope, while no commandment-breaker or unrepentant sinner can inherit it.

Meaning of Key Phrases

The promise is of a renewed heaven and a renewed earth that take the place of the first heaven and the first earth after those have passed away. That renewed creation is the eternal home prepared to receive God's people, where they will have an eternity of happiness and enjoy His personal presence throughout eternity. It is the setting for God to dwell with His people, where death, sorrow, crying, pain and tears come to an end. These blessings of the new creation are made available to every soul.

There will be no more sea, and this means human separation will end. The sea now divides friends and stands as a broad, fathomless barrier between loved ones, breaking up associations, but in the new earth God's redeemed family will dwell together with no more partings. That same hope applies to those kept thousands of miles apart by the Pacific Ocean, that the sea that separated them will be no more. Its absence also means there will be no fierce torrents, no engulfing ocean, and no restless, murmuring waves. Obedience to all of God's commandments fits believers for a place in that royal family, and the promise should lead every soul to seek eternal life, search the Scriptures, and purify himself in hope so as to be numbered with the redeemed.

In the new earth there will be no chilling winds and no disagreeable changes, and the atmosphere will always be right and healthy, in contrast to the cold, blustering, changeable weather of the present earth. Every mark of the curse will be removed and the earth will be restored to the purity and beauty of Eden as the home of the redeemed. The verse points to the future glory of this renewed earth without describing its details, which are not essential to salvation.

Timing and Cleansing Fire

The new heaven and the new earth do not appear at the second advent itself but at the close of the thousand years that follow it, after the wicked dead have been raised and destroyed. Through those thousand years the saints rest inside the holy city and reign as kings and priests unto God, and the rest of the earth is not cleansed until the wicked are raised at the end of that time and come up around the city. After that thousand-year reunion in the city of God the city comes down to this earth as the place prepared for it, this earth cleansed by fire from all impurity, where the saints live in glorious homes, build houses and plant vineyards, tend the earth without toil, and continue in praise to God.

The same fire from God that devours the wicked purifies the whole earth and melts it over to make it new. It sweeps away every stain of sin and every mark and trace of the curse, so that the first heaven and the first earth pass away, the universe is clean, and no eternally burning hell remains before the redeemed to keep sin's fearful consequences in mind. In that burning Satan is the root and his children are the branches, burned up root and branch. The wicked never set foot upon and never desecrate the earth made new, where Paradise will rest.

When Christ again stands upon the Mount of Olives it is rent asunder and parts into an immense plain, a mighty plain made ready for the Paradise of God to rest upon. Jesus at the head of the saints descends from the City onto it, and the holy city of God, the New Jerusalem, comes down from God out of heaven and settles upon that prepared plain. Old Jerusalem is not now a sacred place and pilgrimages there do not strengthen faith or advance God's work, because the guilt of rejecting and crucifying Christ rests upon it under God's curse. When this sin-cursed earth is purified by refining fire from heaven from every stain of sin, including the vile blot upon Jerusalem, the land now called the Holy Land will truly become holy.

The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah by fire illustrates the coming destruction of the world by fire, so earthly prosperity is not a safe basis for hope. The end of all things is at hand, when this world and all that is in it will soon be consumed by fire and all earthly things dissolved. A new heavens and a new earth are promised to all who are loyal and true to God's commandments, when the treasures of the wicked are lost to them forever and the righteous take possession of riches that endure, heavenly treasures incorruptible, undefiled, and that fade not away.

Purity and Beauty Restored

After the wicked are consumed the same fire purifies the whole earth and makes it new, sweeping away every trace and mark and stain of the curse and every ruin wrought by Satan until the universe is clean. The renewed earth is beautiful and holy and free from anything impure to mar peace and happiness or disturb the saints who possess the kingdom forever as their eternal inheritance. There will be no eternally burning hell set before the redeemed to keep the fearful consequences of sin in mind. The only lasting reminder of sin will be the wounds of Christ's crucifixion.

The cleansed earth is restored to its original loveliness as when God saw that it was very good, to the purity and beauty of Eden. It will be more beautiful than the promised land, and the land of Canaan will then appear as the eternal home where the nations of the saved dwell forever, where sin and death can never enter and nothing impure mars their joy as they reflect their Redeemer. There the earthly wanderings of God's people are over and they enter the goodly land in a greater deliverance than they had hoped, redeemed and made immortal to possess it forever. The vision of that Eden beauty is the final and complete fulfillment of the promise, without describing future details that are not essential to salvation.

Eden itself will be restored upon the earth more gloriously adorned than at the beginning. The restored garden will remain as a sample and preserved example of God's perfect creation, untouched by sin's curse, showing what the whole earth would have become if humanity had fulfilled the Creator's plan by obedience. God planted Eden and especially blessed it, and withdrew it from the earth before the flood destroyed the earth in order to preserve a specimen of His perfect work free from the curse sin brought upon the earth. The garden had remained on earth after Adam and Eve were driven from it until the flood, and He will bring it back again in the restoration at the end of the world shown to Enoch in connection with the second coming of Christ.

The earth made new is of matchless charm and perfect loveliness, with nothing to mar or taint or destroy it and nothing to cause disease or death. Its fruit and flowers will be far more abundant and beautiful than in nature now, which remains marred by the curse. Even now the leaves of the tree of life are for the healing of God's believing, repentant children, who may receive blessings from trees and shrubs and flowers, giving hope of health and gladness and joy in the restored earth. The beauty of present nature in flowers and fields and fruit trees and forest shade and hills and valleys lifts the mind from what is seen to what is unseen and teaches this hope. Blighted though it is with the curse of sin, that beauty only faintly represents the pure and holy and incorruptible and everlasting kingdom to come and the joys prepared for those who love Him.

God and Redeemed Together

The new heaven and new earth are the setting where God Himself will dwell with His people, where the tabernacle of God will be with men and He will be ever present among them as their God. There the former order has passed away with no more sea, and tears, death, sorrow, crying and pain will end in a beautiful city free from the suffering and heartache of this present earth. It is the future home of the redeemed for eternity in God's personal presence.

Upon that renewed creation the holy city, New Jerusalem, comes down from God out of heaven prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. It is the great City with twelve foundations and twelve gates, three on each side with an angel at each gate, settling upon a great plain prepared for the city of God. This earth so prepared is the saints' own earth, made ready for them with Jesus at their head descending from the City.

The renewed earth is the glorious home Christ prepares to receive His people into, the place of His glorious reign and of the established kingdom of Christ and of God. It is where Jesus lives in glory with redeemed humanity whom He bought back by giving His life on the cross at Calvary, bearing forever in His hands the prints of the cruel nails as witness to the sufferings by which penitent sinners gain eternal life. After the wicked are finally destroyed and the former order has passed away, Christ triumphs and reigns there in the consummation that closes the controversy after His coming, the resurrection, and the destruction of sin.

Those redeemed by Jesus' death will be with Him and ever dwell with Him there, for by His death He ransoms many and destroys him who has the power of death. The Father gives Jesus the kingdom and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven to possess forever and ever. Satan and sinners having been destroyed will never more disturb heaven or the purified new earth.

Outside the City the saints inhabit beautiful silver houses supported by pillars and heavenly mansions, and after Christ has prepared the place and the city of God has come to earth they take possession of their home. There they build houses and plant vineyards, work the fields without toil, and tend the earth while light shines about them in continual praise to God. This appears after the thousand years, when the wicked dead have been raised and destroyed and the first heaven and earth have passed away, and this imperishable inheritance is called Abraham's farm.

Humanity there regains its lost kingship in restored harmony with creation, where animals that were fierce become gentle and live without harming or destroying. The redeemed resume the garden and field occupations of Eden, building homes and enjoying the work of their hands, singing and making music in lasting joy. Life there brings unending growth in ability, discovery, and understanding.

The redeemed will range side by side with loved ones, with heavenly angels, and with the redeemed host who came up through great tribulation and washed their robes white in the blood of the Lamb. Received into beautiful heavenly mansions prepared for them, they with resurrected family will cry Worthy, worthy is the Lamb that was slain and lives again, bow together in adoration at the Saviour's feet, and cast their glittering crowns before Him because He won them by His own blood. Thus they stand as heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ in His everlasting kingdom under the whole heaven that will know no end.

There the great Shepherd leads His flock to fountains of living waters, the tree of life yields fruit every month with leaves for the service of the nations, and ever-flowing streams clear as crystal run beside shadowing trees. Wide plains swelling into hills of beauty and lofty mountains give God's long pilgrim and wandering people a home, a literal home and country where the first dominion forfeited by sin is regained to be possessed forever with Christ. Its glory surpasses human language, for eye has not seen nor ear heard nor heart conceived what God has prepared, and it is not to be spiritualized away as too material.

In that life there will be no racial distinctions or barriers between white and colored believers, for God will put up no walls of partition between them. After the thousand years the earth is so purified that God's city will not be corrupted and none of its inhabitants will know corruption. There Jesus gathers the faithful to live forever, never again to face temptation or trial from the enemy.

Prophecy and Doctrine Confirmed

The chapter was shown to John as a living reality by Christ Himself on the Isle of Patmos, given from God as a solemn warning and a lesson of things which will be in the last day, showing what will surely take place and will ere long be fulfilled and proclaimed with great power. Verses 1-4 and verses 5-7 are to be read and understood now in order to know where the world stands in earth's history. The last four chapters of Revelation must be read carefully, for Satan gains a great victory if he can keep minds confused about them when the perils of the last days are upon the world. The verse calls for a work that should have been done long ago and now needs to be done, requiring thorough humbling of the soul before God, earnest seeking of the Lord with heart and mind and soul, cleansing and refining and transformation of the heart and soul temple, diligent cultivation of the individual heart, and the appearing of fruit in the life in proportion to the light given.

Study of this prophetic vision of the new heaven and new earth helped bring the second coming of Christ into view as near. Believing and practicing the Word of God is the only hope of the world, so magazines and other fictitious reading must be put away and Satan's sophistry refused in favor of believing the Word. The verse belongs to the closing end of the whole Bible history running from creation to the new earth, and teaching it to children directs their minds to God as the Giver of all blessings and away from their own selfish interests. It completes the restitution of all things since sin entered, ends the controversy between Christ and Satan and between the Son of God and the powers of darkness, and brings the final triumph of God's people with the eternal removal of evil, the destruction of Satan and all his followers and everything pertaining to his work. After the wicked are destroyed the earth is purified, the curse is gone, the universe is clean, and the earth is beautiful and holy as the saints' eternal inheritance and everlasting possession, revealing the coming glory at the final redemption of the church as the most momentous event of the dispensation, unparalleled by all that precede it.

The renewal fulfills God's purpose for the earth through Christ's humiliation, sacrifice, suffering, and cruel torturous death on the cross, redeeming humanity and restoring the dominion lost through the first Adam and the Eden home lost by humanity. Renewed by God's power and freed from sin and sorrow, the earth will be the eternal home of the redeemed, and the promised inheritance is the recovery of that first dominion. What is to be is the new heaven and new earth prepared as the higher school for which believers are now being educated, where much in the Bible that cannot be understood in this life will be explained by Christ Himself so its truth is known, and reaching that future requires correcting defects of character and living a life of continual addition and overcoming. The new heaven and new earth are the literal home and country of the saved, the first dominion forfeited by sin regained by Christ to be possessed forever with Him by the redeemed who inherit the land, not to be spiritualized away as too material. Christ went to prepare mansions there, and those who accept God's word will not be wholly ignorant of that abode, yet its glory surpasses human language and eye has not seen nor ear heard nor heart conceived what God has prepared.

Abraham saw the earth restored to its Eden beauty in vision as his everlasting possession and as the final, complete fulfillment of God's promise. Abraham and his descendants will receive that promised inheritance there after this earth is purified, and the purified earth as the future home of God's heirs, where after Christ prepares a place and the city of God comes to earth the redeemed take possession of their home, build houses, and plant vineyards, is called Abraham's farm, an imperishable inheritance worth keeping God's law and repenting of sin to receive. The choice to resist Satan's control and develop characters without spot or wrinkle determines whether a person has a place and title there. As the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah by fire illustrates the coming destruction of the world by fire, so earthly prosperity is not a safe basis for hope. The restoration of Israel belongs in the earth made new, associated with a great multitude from every nation worshiping God and the Lamb while the Lord reigns in glory.

Prophecies about this future glory of the earth made new occupied by the redeemed were mistakenly applied to Christ's first appearing, leading the Jews to expect a mighty king who would free them from oppression and exalt them to rule the world, while instead Christ came humbly among the poor and needy. The renewed earth is linked with Christ's second coming and the resurrection of the righteous, when Eden will bloom on earth again. After Christ appears the commandment-keepers are glorified, translated to heaven without seeing death, rise with songs of triumph, and enter the city in the land of Eden, and this is connected with the meeting of Adam and Christ, the second Adam. The glory of the new earth was first seen in vision, first shown after prayer brought release from distress.

Seeking the Promised Inheritance

The new earth is the eternal, heavenly and immortal inheritance with God and Christ, a better place than even this beautiful present world, secure where eternal riches are safe and the plan of salvation reaches its reward. It is the saints' eternal inheritance and everlasting possession to be possessed forever, where the nations of the saved make their home, earthly wanderings are over, and they enter the goodly land in a greater deliverance than they had hoped. Contemplating that holy city and eternal home brings heaven near, turns the heart from earthly things and amusements, and makes heavenly things the chief joy, consolation and longing of those who love God.

The promise is glad news to all who love God and love to think and talk of Him, who will be in their element breathing heaven's atmosphere, but those taken up with commonplace things, worldly excitement and pleasure will not enjoy that life. The chapter is a solemn test asking on which side one will be in the great day, for only the pure in heart shall see God and endure His presence, and those who in selfishness refuse warning and self-denial could not enjoy heaven nor endure its purity. Obedience to all God's commandments and law fits believers for a place in that royal family and prepares them to have part in it, and its promise should lead every soul to seek eternal life, search the Scriptures, and purify himself in hope.

A clear title to that home should be sought during brief probation by faithful continuance in well-doing, overcoming sinful nature, conforming to Christ's image, and preparing daily for eternity, for debate over whether the world is round or flat is irrelevant to that hope. The earth made new is reserved for the obedient and the truly penitent whose sins are confessed and pardoned, who will have a place in the city of God, while no commandment-breaker, rebellious, disobedient, or ungrateful person can inherit it. Children who dishonor and disobey parents and disregard their counsel can have no part in it unless they repent and reform through Christ's grace, for obedience must be learned now or the peace of the ransomed would be marred, and reverence for God shown in care for parents connects with hope of a place there.

God's kingdom there will be formed by saints, not sinners, so uncleanness and sexual impurity must be repented and forsaken or those who refuse will fall with the wicked when judgment is executed. Permission to live with the Saviour there requires earnestness, self-denial, and labor for souls as those who must give an account, searching out the honest in heart with the Bible, feeling a burden for perishing souls and unwarned cities, and not speaking discouraging words or carrying too light a burden. Preparing for that home requires transformation of character through grace and the Holy Spirit, giving moral power to live in God's presence, commune with Him, join the angels, walk with Jesus, and show kindness rather than harshness, with faults overcome and characters made Christlike and without spot.

That preparation calls for thorough humbling before God, earnest seeking with heart, mind, and soul, cleansing and refining of the heart temple, diligent cultivation of the heart, and fruit in proportion to light, including sharing in Christ's sufferings, resisting Satan's control by relying on Christ, and standing faithful in the struggle. The verse is an inducement to live holy lives in the fear of God, endure, remain in harmony with His will, and lay up treasure in the world to come rather than on earthly treasures, for to refuse after such inducements brings the terrible disappointment of losing heaven and losing the soul. The new earth is the higher school for which believers are now educated, where Christ Himself will explain what cannot be understood in this life, and reaching it requires correcting defects of character and a life of continual addition and overcoming.

Parents are to hope to take their children there to enjoy immortal life and sing God's praises, an inheritance worth more than earthly pleasures, requiring determined work for one another, right training of youth to gain the crown of life, and teaching children to direct minds to God as Giver rather than selfish interests, with angels and the Holy Spirit assisting teachers and parents. To enjoy that heavenly society where people seek one another's happiness from pure love, people must live by heavenly principles now, using influence to do good, and those who suffer or die for truth will rise to everlasting life in the city where Jesus' light shines while their persecutors remain outside and realize too late they chose wrongly. The city is worth striving for, preparing for it is preparation for eternity, and the hope of seeing the earth made new and being saved eternally calls for beholding the King in His beauty. The beauty of nature in this world would satisfy if not blighted by sin's curse, but the verse promises a pure, holy, incorruptible, everlasting kingdom to come, a blessed hope for the children of the heavenly King waiting for the Son of man in the clouds.
