Angel at the Pearl Gate of the Holy Cityby CBPepper
21:13Revelation 21:13
On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
The verse describes the New Jerusalem, the holy city of God, as having twelve gates in all, with three on the east, three on the north, three on the south, and three on the west. An angel stands at each gate, and the city comes down from God out of heaven to settle on the earth after Christ's second coming and after the thousand years and the judgment of the wicked dead are finished. Its gates open toward every direction as a provision for the eternal blessings and glories awaiting the redeemed and a reason to seek eternal life. Right to enter in through the gates belongs to those who are changed and sanctified in character in this life, who do His commandments and keep the truth. Jesus Himself opens the pearly gate to welcome those who have washed their robes in His blood and stood firmly for His truth, for the gates lead to scenes and services that are spiritual, pure and holy, which only those who have learned on earth to delight in God and heaven can enjoy.
City and Its Gates
The verse describes the New Jerusalem, the holy city of God, as having twelve gates in all, with three gates on each of its four sides — on the east, on the north, on the south, and on the west. An angel stands at each gate. The city also has twelve foundations made of the same kinds of precious stones used in the priests' breastplate where the names of Israel's twelve tribes were engraved, and streets of transparent gold clear as crystal, while the arrangement of the gates is not explained. Its gates open toward every direction.
The city comes down from God out of heaven and settles on earth on the place where the saints stand, after Christ's second coming and after the thousand years and the judgment of the wicked dead are finished. Before it settles, Jesus leaves the city with the saints and the angelic host and descends upon a great mountain that parts asunder under His feet and becomes a mighty plain He has prepared for the city. Then the city descends in splendor and dazzling glory and settles on that plain while the saints cry out at its coming.
Entering Through the Gates
The city and its gates are a provision made for the eternal blessings promised to God's people. They are part of the glories awaiting the redeemed and a reason to seek eternal life. Their beauty opens toward every direction and gives a glimpse of inner glory that encourages hope in the heavenly home and in the rest awaiting the faithful.
Everyone who will go into that city must be changed and sanctified in character here in this life. Those who conform their lives to Christ will enter through these gates into the city. Right to the tree of life and to enter in through the gates belongs to those who do His commandments. The nations that have kept the truth enter into the city of God.
Jesus opens its pearly gate and welcomes those who have washed their robes in His blood and stood firmly for His truth. They enter with a sense of having a rightful place in the city. The gates lead into scenes and services of heaven that are spiritual, pure and holy, breathed in an atmosphere of purity itself. Those unacquainted with heavenly things, who have not trained their minds on earth to delight in devotion and meditation upon God and heaven, will never be brought to those gates, because they cannot engage in and delight in heaven what was not their special delight on earth.
