Revelation 21:5
And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
The One seated on the throne who speaks is God, speaking as the Lord Jesus Christ, whose words were ordered to be written down because they are true and faithful and will surely be fulfilled. To make all things new is to bring a new heaven and a new earth of surpassing beauty where Eden blooms again, God dwells with His people in the holy city, and death, sorrow, pain, tears and impurity pass away forever. Before that renewal the sin-cursed earth is cleansed by refining fire from heaven, after Christ's second coming and the resurrection of the just, at the close of the thousand years when the wicked are burned up and the holy city descends. That eternal inheritance of the water of life belongs to those who thirst for the heavenly, overcome, keep all God's commandments, and are pure in heart, for only saints fitted by obedience can endure His glory. Making all things new also means present renewal of the person in Christ as a new creature with a new heart and new purposes, as believers are sanctified through belief of the truth and comforted amid grief by hope of the resurrection and everlasting life.
Voice and Written Record
The One seated on the throne who speaks is God Himself, speaking as the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the true witness, and His utterance carries the authority of the true and faithful witness. The command to write was given because the words are true and faithful, and therefore the written record of the promise that all things will be made new is possessed now for present assurance. What cannot be understood in the Bible now will be made clear in the higher school, where Christ Himself will read and explain it so that it is known as truth.
The words are true and faithful, true and trustworthy, declaring that God will make all things new in the future world and the coming new heaven and new earth. That promised renewal will surely be fulfilled, bringing the blessed hereafter when the former things have passed away and pain, death, suffering and sorrow no longer afflict His people. It belongs to the eternal blessings made available to every soul, including the new creation and the holy city described in the surrounding verses, where after the sin-cursed earth is purified God dwells with His people. The declaration is followed at once by the announcement of its completion and the gift of the water of life and inheritance for those who overcome. Believing and practicing these words is the only hope of the world against Satan's deception, and what is not understood now will be made clear in the higher school where Christ leads and explains His Word until its truth is seen.
New World Foretold
To make all things new is to bring a new heaven and a new earth of surpassing beauty, glorified and restored as the home of the redeemed. Every trace of the curse is removed and the earth is made new with Edenic purity and beauty, unmarred by anything that taints or destroys. Eden blooms on earth again in that renewal of all things.
In that renewal God dwells with His people and wipes away suffering and death, giving the water of life and an inheritance to those who overcome. The new creation and the holy city belong to the eternal blessings made available to every soul. After the sin-cursed earth is purified and freed from every trace of sin and the curse, God renews all things and gives the new earth to the saints as their everlasting home, cleansed of sin and every mark of the curse for their joy and glory.
There the former things have passed away, and pain and death no longer afflict His people. Death, sorrow, and pain are gone where God dwells with His people, and suffering and death are gone from the new heaven and new earth. There will be no more partings in the city of God, and no impurity or want to disturb the peace and happiness of the saints in their everlasting home.
The making new takes place on this very earth where the Son of God lived in humanity and where the King of glory lived and suffered and died. This is the field Satan claims as his, the one dark blot in creation under the curse of sin, yet it is not only ransomed but exalted and honored above all other worlds in the universe, because where sin abounded grace much more abounds. At that making new the tabernacle of God will be with men and God Himself will dwell with them as their God, and through endless ages the redeemed will walk in the light of the Lord praising Him for Immanuel, God with us.
The Lord Jesus confirms that He will renew all things, so that the dominion over the earth lost by the first Adam through sin will be restored by the second Adam. Under Him humanity regains subjection of all things and the earth is brought into its blessed restored state.
Purification and Time Fulfilled
Before the renewal the sin-cursed earth is purified by refining fire from heaven that cleanses away every stain of sin and every trace and mark of the curse. After the wicked are judged the earth is purified by fire and then made new as the saints' everlasting home and inheritance. When purified and freed from all impurity the renewed earth has Edenic purity and beauty with nothing impure or harmful to disturb the peace and happiness of the redeemed. The declaration is true and faithful and will surely be fulfilled.
Old Jerusalem is not sacred now but rests under guilt and a curse for refusing the light of Christ and crucifying Him, so pilgrimages there do nothing to advance God's cause. God will cleanse away that vile blot, and then the land now called the Holy Land will indeed become holy. The Mount of Olives will be torn apart to become an immense plain and the holy city of God will descend upon it.
The making new follows Christ's second coming and the resurrection of the just, when Eden will bloom on earth again. It takes place at the close of the thousand years after the second advent, when the holy city descends and the saints inhabit the renewed earth. It comes after the final execution of judgment at the second death, when the devil, his angels, and all the wicked are burned up. At Christ's coming God by His own power changes the earth into an everlasting home for His children, making all things eternally new.
The scenes of Christ's return and this renewal are of surpassing glory, and those scenes helped recognize the second coming as near. Together with Revelation 18 and Revelation 19 the promise is a living reality shown to John that will be proclaimed with great power and will surely come in the last day. It is part of God's solemn warning about the things that will be in these last days, made known by Christ Himself to John on the Isle of Patmos, describing the last events of this earth's history to show where this earth's history stands. The last chapters of Revelation, including the last four chapters, are to be read carefully and understood now so that Satan cannot keep minds confused and gain the victory. That reading calls for work long neglected to be done now through thorough humbling of the soul before God, with cleansing, refining and transformation of the heart, and bringing forth fruit in the life in proportion to the light given.
Heirs and Their Fitness
The inheritance of all things made new belongs to those who thirst for the heavenly rather than the earthly, because they have made Christ their friend and given their life to follow Him. It is given to those who overcome, who receive the water of life as their inheritance and the crown of life as overcomers. Angels assist and the Holy Spirit works with every human effort to save souls, with fathers and mothers taking hold of the work and with schools educating boys and girls, so that youth may be brought up rightly to share in that reward. Working for one another and preparing places to present the truth belong to getting ready and being fitted for that renewal through sanctification by belief of the truth.
Fitness for a place in the city of God among the commandment-keeping redeemed and the royal family requires obedience to all of God's commandments and earnest seeking for eternal life, where there will be no more partings. Only the pure in heart can see God and endure His purity and glory, for those who belong there are saints and not sinners, and uncleanness will not remain. Those who persist in selfishness, reject Christ's path of self-denial, and refuse to repent could not endure that glory and will fall with the wicked at the judgment.
The promised everlasting home of true happiness, without tears or want, is offered on stated conditions rather than imposed by force. It belongs to the plan of salvation and the eternal riches made available to every person, where faithful service and cooperation with God lead to everlasting life secure beyond human measure. It is a prize worth striving for, and preparing for it is preparation for eternity that includes helping others seek it. Prophecies of Christ's second coming and the earth made new were mistakenly applied to His first coming by those who expected a glorious king to free and exalt them, so that His humble life among the poor and oppressed did not match their expectations and they rejected Him.
Present Renewal and Readiness
Making all things new means a present and complete remaking of the person in Christ, who becomes a new creature with a new heart, new purposes, and new springs of action patterned after His unselfish life. The old sinful character is wholly replaced and not merely patched, for leaving self in control with only a little of Christ added is an unstable and worthless union. Selected good traits cannot be patched onto the character while its sinful parts remain, but Christ gives an entirely new character with His righteousness in the new birth. Greater evidence alone cannot produce this change, for the new birth is needed to discern the kingdom of God.
Believers are now getting ready and being fitted for the future renewal by being sanctified through belief of the truth. They are called to take a solemn view of life in light of eternity, remembering that only the pure in heart can see God and that those who persist in selfishness and reject self-denial could not endure His purity and glory. Readiness comes through thorough humbling of the soul before God, with cleansing, refining, and transformation of the heart, and with fruit brought forth in the life in proportion to the light given. In this way they will be prepared and not found in heresy.
That preparation is lived out by meeting together and providing places to present the truth as it is in Jesus. Obedience to all of God's commandments fits people for a place among His commandment-keeping redeemed, and this prospect should lead every believing soul to seek earnestly for eternal life. Readiness also calls for working for one another, practicing love in dealing with others, and helping others seek the heavenly home as a prize worth striving for in preparation for eternity. It calls for determinedly bringing up youth in a right manner so they receive the crown of life as overcomers, with fathers and mothers taking hold of the work, with schools educating boys and girls assisted by angels, and with the Holy Spirit working with all human effort to save souls.
The promise comforts those who mourn and gives hope amid present grief and earthly troubles by looking forward to the resurrection of the dead and everlasting life, when death, sorrow, and pain are gone and God dwells with His people. The words are true and faithful, and the former things passing away assures that pain and death will no longer afflict His people in the blessed hereafter. That renewed existence is one of continued learning beyond what is known now, where He leads His people to the tree of life and walks with them explaining the parts of His Word they did not understand, until they see His face. That life is worth striving for with every nerve, sinew, muscle, and power of mind to reach the highest standard possible, while the Lord of heaven performs the rest.
