Revelation 22:15
For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
Those named remain outside the holy city, shut out from entrance through its gates with no right to the tree of life and no place in God's kingdom. Right to enter belongs only to those who do His commandments with whole-souled daily obedience, for mere profession gives no entrance. Loving and making a lie means especially proclaiming God's law abolished, changed, or void, including knowingly rejecting the Sabbath, and teaching human traditions and fancies instead of God's Word. It also covers every form of untruthfulness, evasion, exaggeration, and false report, and above all evil-speaking, circulating accusations and prejudice against others. The exclusion becomes final when probation closes and destiny is fixed, so every soul must now make thorough work for repentance and open the heart to Christ.
Wording and Literary Setting
The excluded remain outside the holy city as dogs, sorcerers, whoremongers or adulterers, murderers, idolaters, and whosoever loves and makes a lie, marked by evil practices including sorcery, sexual immorality, murder, idolatry, occult impurity, violence and falsehood. Those who persist in these evils are shut out from entrance through the gates into the city, in contrast to those who do His commandments who have right to the tree of life and may enter in. Their exclusion is part of the final judgment after each receives according to deeds, with certain destruction without remedy for those who persist.
To be without means to have no right to the tree of life and no place in God's kingdom, not received into heaven as holy, happy beings. The wicked and unrepentant do not inherit eternal life, but are outside the holy city with no share in its life, since the kingdom belongs to those who overcome sin and obey God. The disobedient have no right to enter or claim the holy city, for their character leaves them outside, unfit to be received as loyal citizens.
The words are the testimony of Jesus Christ, who never lies, made known to John on the Isle of Patmos and sent by His angel to the churches. He testifies as the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last, the root and offspring of David and the bright and morning star. They stand joined to the call of the Spirit and the bride for the thirsty to come and take the water of life freely. They declare what will be spoken when probation closes and eternal destiny is forever fixed, when mercy folds its wings and steps from the throne above the ark with It is done, fixing the unjust and filthy in that state and the righteous and holy in theirs, with Christ coming quickly with His reward to give every man according to his works, judged not by profession but by purity of motive and obedience to God's law. Keeping the commandments in this setting is evidence of love for Jesus, and obedience means freedom from the law's bondage, not being under that bondage.
The verse stands in the last chapters of Revelation that make known the last events of earth's history and give Christ's final missionary warning calling people to choose righteousness before the time of decision and away from sin and its judgment toward obedience. The last four chapters must be read carefully now, because Satan is at work in all deceivableness of unrighteousness to deceive if possible the very elect, and if he can keep minds confused about these things he gains a great victory where confusion may be death unto death. It belongs to the account of events at the close of the thousand years after Christ's second advent, when the holy city descends to the earth.
Entrance Condition and Exclusion
Right to the tree of life and entrance through the gates into the city belongs only to those who do His commandments and do the will of the Father, who hear the Word of God and keep it with whole-souled daily obedience in the footsteps of Christ. Saying Lord, Lord and mere profession or claim to know Him gives no entrance, for abiding in Christ is shown by keeping His commandments. While commandment keepers enter where there is no more curse and no night, the impure, occult, immoral, violent, idolatrous, and false remain without, shut outside the city.
All who are disobedient to God's commandments are left outside, shut out from the tree and the gates with the false shepherds they believed. They are judged not by profession but by works, purity of motive, and obedience to God's law. Entering requires complying with the requirements, obeying God's law which remains fully in force without loss of jot or tittle.
All people merge in character under two heads, the Prince of Life and the prince of darkness. In probationary time there are only two sides and two parties, the loyal and obedient whom God trusts and the wicked who love and make a lie under Satan's banner. Those who receive Christ are given power to become loyal sons of God who keep His commandments and enter through the gates into the city to the tree of life, while commandment-breakers remain outside. Those outside have chosen Satan's service and rejected repentance and God's mercy.
The exclusion is final when probation closes and eternal destiny is forever fixed. It comes after mercy folds its wings and steps from the throne above the ark with the proclamation It is done, and after the decree fixes the unjust and filthy in that state and the righteous and holy in theirs, with no further justification and no second call to the feast for those who refused pardon and salvation. At the final judgment after the wicked surround the city for battle, Jesus closes its gates and stands with angels and saints crowned on the wall. The wicked outside look up and see the glorious company radiant with the image of Jesus, clothed with glory, honor, immortality, and eternal life, and see the glory and majesty of the King of kings, and their courage fails as they feel what treasure and glory they have lost, for the wages of sin is death, and their grief comes too late because destiny is settled.
Christ's atonement offers people the opportunity and power to become God's children, but it does not remove the call to obey God's fully binding law or save anyone while continuing in sin. Entering requires complying with the requirements, following Christ in self-denial and cross-bearing with His tender spirit ruling the heart, overcoming temptation through His power, and turning wholly from sin and selfishness to obey the terms of salvation. Those who choose to continue in sin stay outside and must accept the awful results of their course, while those who choose the righteousness of Christ and diligently maintain integrity enter, for to admit the unclean who refuse would bring their unsanctified ideas into heaven and begin another rebellion.
Law Sabbath and Doctrine
To love and make a lie means above all to declare God's law abolished, changed, altered, or made void, and to teach by precept or example that transgression does not matter and that it is indifferent whether men keep or break the law. That falsehood is Satan's own lie against God, first uttered through the serpent to turn the sinless pair into sinners, growing out of his insinuation in heaven that God's law of government was imperfect and needed to be remodeled, for which disloyalty he and his sympathizers were expelled. With long practice in deception he still labors to make gross error appear as truth, and all who accept men's assertions above the Bible and voice his words stand under God's curse and will be found outside the city with all commandment-breakers to receive according to their works.
The last chapter answers whether a person can be saved without keeping the Sabbath, showing that right to the tree of life and entrance through the gates into the city belongs to those who do His commandments, so that keeping the Sabbath is necessary for salvation and entrance. Those who knowingly reject that light and remain disloyal will be outside the city of God and not among the loyal and righteous in the heavenly kingdom. To refuse to honor the Sabbath as the memorial of creation for the sake of human favor and convenience, or to avoid inconvenience and reproach, dishonors Christ and places the chooser with the disloyal and with the forces opposed to God and of antichrist. Such disobedience bears sinful fruit and can lead others astray, and the influence withheld from righteousness and the stumbling blocks and obstacles put in others' way will be counted against them in the judgment when each person is judged by deeds.
To invent and teach as doctrine human suppositions, traditions, fables, fanciful imaginary doctrines, and new theories not contained in God's Word is to love and make a lie that shuts out, and ministers and teachers who preach their own suppositions place themselves with those left outside. Such inventive minds confuse the mind so that people cannot know whether they are keeping God's Word or following men. Young men who would teach truth must not do this but must preach the Word, search the Scriptures earnestly with solemn fear, and sink deep into the mines of heavenly truth to secure riches that mean eternal life.
The verse belongs to the third angel's message, which combines the first and second messages and binds them up with the third, bringing into view the closing scenes of this earth's history. It marks the great and last warfare between two classes, those who keep the commandments of God and those who make void the law of God, showing that lawbreakers and liars are left without. It is a communication for all who live in these last days, lifting up the standard of truth as the last message of mercy and final warning given to the world, to be declared by all who love God and keep His commandments against fables taught to counteract the truth, calling people away from sin and its judgment toward obedience to God.
Keeping the commandments is presented as evidence of love for Jesus, and obedience means freedom from the law's bondage rather than being under that bondage. The verse marks the contrast between those who obey God's commandments and enter through the gates and those named as remaining outside in their listed evils. Entry into the kingdom is therefore not secured by professing faith alone, but by the acceptable obedience of the kind Christ offered to the Father.
Meaning of Loving Falsehood
Loving and making a lie covers every form of untruthfulness, including evading the truth by silence for fear of offending, testifying to a lie by word or act or silence, playing fast and loose with truth, dissembling to suit others, falsifying, prevarication, exaggeration, and any false statement or untruthful report. Those who utter untruths serve him who has been a liar from the beginning, and untruthfulness grows upon the one who practices it until he can trust no one. He who utters untruths sells his soul cheaply for temporary advantage, while safety lies in making truth the girdle, being true in utterance, never speaking or acting a lie, and holding firmly to truth as essential to Christian character.
Evil-speaking is loving and making a lie, for circulating accusations, carrying hearsay from one to another, and putting prejudice against a brother or sister into minds disturbs peace and weakens confidence. Craving contention and strife and damaging spiritual reports is a depraved appetite that ruins religious experience and places those who indulge it outside the city of God with liars. Those who do this depart from Christ to follow Satan who teaches them to lie, and whatever their position in God's service they dishonor Him. Their work proves lack of Christlike love and loss of first love, which no ability or position can make up.
The liars left outside include the wicked who put reproachful falsehoods into circulation concerning God's people, pictured as black balls thrown after the saints as they press forward for the heavenly treasure, including falsehoods against those looking for the Lord. God's faithful people must live a blameless life, abstain from all appearance of evil, keep the eyes fixed on the heavenly priceless treasure, and move boldly forward paying no regard to those reproachful falsehoods. So doing makes them more and more like Christ and transforms and fits them for translation, and they can bear reproach cheerfully as Jesus suffered rejection and death while looking to their inheritance and reward in heaven.
The verse covers uttering falsehoods against others, holding them up in a ridiculous light, blackening character to gain a selfish aim, and gathering up bits of slander with the poison of asps under the tongue, while the precious truth coming from the lips is to be revered. Those who accuse God's children belong with those who love and practice lying and will be left outside, standing under the banner of the prince of darkness. They are not contrite and humble but are known by their fruits, and in probationary time there are only two sides and two parties, the loyal and obedient whom God trusts and the wicked who love and make a lie.
The description applies to those who have withdrawn from the body, whose moral worth and standing before God is low, who long unconsecrated in heart felt close testimonies to be a yoke of bondage, threw off the yoke, kept corrupt ways, and delight in warring against God's truth. A few honest ones among them will be rescued, but most will have their true character fully developed in a little while, and God calls His people to separate from them and cut loose from them. It also applies to those deceived by Satan who join falsehood and spread it as truth, who hide true purposes while in fellowship with the fallen angel to deceive those partly in darkness and turn some from truth to error, and who unite with unbelievers because they have not stood firmly for the truth. Deceptive miracles, including healings and other marvels, will lead them into falsehood.
Those who invent falsehood and delight in it are shut out with the wicked as agents of Satan, using lies as weapons against the truth because they have no Bible argument against it. They rejoice when false publications give excuse to resist the truth and deceive others by them, so their work must be counteracted. Those who make a lie and love the lie after it is made need to be saved from that state, which men choose more easily than believing the truth. The way not to make a lie nor love it is to have Jesus presented as Pattern, for loving Jesus makes one pure, harmless, undefiled, surrounded with the atmosphere of faith rather than doubt and skepticism and unbelief, talking of Jesus and heaven and Christian duty and warfare and how to resist Satan successfully, and not preying like vultures upon others' supposed defects.
Bearing false witness and making lies require church discipline, for persistent lying, murmuring, and contention foster a selfish loveless character like Satan's and place people among those excluded from the city. Deceptive false visions, such as Annie's unless corrected, will leave the practitioner among those outside, for only the sanctified, pure, and holy can enter the holy city.
Moral Failures That Exclude
Fornicators will be outside the city of God, and their exclusion is certain when judgment is executed and the Spirit withdraws from the world even while the church's triumph draws near. Guilty adulterous love forfeits heaven, as when one loves a married man, steals him from the wife of his youth and breaks her heart, thereby choosing to stand outside with dogs, sorcerers, adulterers, whoremongers and all who love and make a lie. To persist in adultery and other sin is to reject God's law, bring guilt and misery, and be barred from the life of the holy city by one's own choice, selling heaven very cheap to satisfy forbidden love.
Those who persist in sin and take pleasure in unrighteousness will perish outside the city with every abominable thing. That includes dishonesty and falsehood and indulgence of the lust of the flesh, and those who continue in such abominable practices will be left outside unless transformed. Even offenses deemed minor are transgressions, every act is recorded for judgment, and repeated small sins form a character unfit for the kingdom. Without God's transforming power upon life and character sinners will not become overcomers but will be weighed in the balances and found wanting.
Professed disciples who love the world, partake of its spirit and follow its fashions while merely professing faith will remain outside and receive the portion of hypocrites and unbelievers. Profession does not make them Christ's people, for Jesus will acknowledge as His only those who are pure and holy, purified through suffering and kept separate and unspotted from the world. To keep the name of disciple while living with no distinction from unbelievers wounds Jesus and puts Him to open shame, so they must cut loose from the world at once. Profession without obedience brings only greater anguish, and punishment will be greater because they knew His will but did it not. Those who refuse to do right from fear of financial loss, reproach, trials, persecution or suffering show cowardice and shame of Christ and hearts not right with God, and are counted with idolaters, liars and other sinners facing the second death. Yet personal fears do not place one in that class when one remains faithful and does duty.
Those who distrust God will be outside with those who love and make lies, while entrance belongs to overcomers whose hearts are shaped by Christ's love and who cherish the obedient Spirit of the Creator unto eternal life and glory. Those who persist in perversity are outside, especially those who follow human examples instead of God's Word and Christ's faultless pattern, for others' sins do not lessen guilt or change the deserved reward. Neglecting the work needed for one's own soul while searching out others' faults can lead to being left outside the gates. Those who serve the devil even part of the time lose heaven, and a review determines whether the nations that kept the truth are welcomed into the Lord's courts or forbidden any part there.
The ungodly who choose sin and corrupt ways and defile their bodies are shut out from the city and perish with the wicked. The books are opened and they are judged according to works, including secret thoughts and vile acts. Those who persist in evil, including sorcery, adultery, and loving and making lies, remain outside, and this exclusion is connected with the second resurrection, urging sinners to turn from their hard-hearted course rather than face that end.
Urgent Call to Repentance
The division between those inside and those left without presses its warning upon heart and life and character as a call to earnest prayer and untiring work. There is no time to dally, and every soul must now make thorough work for repentance. The soul is to be purified by heartfelt repentance, God asked to forgive unfaithful discharge of duty, no longer tarrying in an unprepared state, and the door of the heart opened that Christ may enter.
The warning belongs to the last four chapters that must be read carefully because the work that should have been done long ago must be done now. What is required is deep and thorough individual work, diligent cultivation of the soil of the heart, and cleansing, refining, and transformation of the soul temple. Those in positions of responsibility in the office and the church are to humble the soul thoroughly before God, so that fruit appears in the life in proportion to light given and a wrong spirit and backsliding are prevented.
Outside the city stands a company rejected of God and forsaken of God. Jesus does not want anyone to be with that outside company, so He came to heal people and save them from it. He took it all upon Himself and felt what the rejected sinner will feel, feeling forsaken of God, suffering that rejection so people would not have to suffer it. Giving self to God in humility and accepting Christ in humble belief writes names in the book of life and keeps people from that outside place, while remaining hard, stubborn, impenitent, indifferent to His claims and unmindful of the great love bestowed leaves a person with that outside company and insults Christ.
Those who love and make lies will be outside the city of God unless they change, facing eternal ruin. They are to be pitied and warned, for those who side with Satan in falsehood are in peril unless they repent. Repentance, confession of sin, and the sanctifying power of truth can transform them and keep them from that end.
Loving and making a lie is incompatible with following Christ, for a person cannot follow Christ while allied with the source of lies. Human beings may be sincerely pious yet have errors of understanding and defects of character, but a life of falsehood is a fraud and a fatal deception. Frankly acknowledging one's own sin takes inward strength, wins a victory over self, and shuts the door against the enemy.
