Revelation 5:12
Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
On Patmos was seen a vast multitude around the throne with living creatures and elders, myriads upon myriads, proclaiming with a loud voice that the slain Lamb is worthy to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and blessing, until every created thing joins in ascribing blessing and honour and glory and dominion forever. He is worthy because He was slain, triumphed over the prince of darkness and conquered death and the grave, and by His blood redeemed to God a people out of every kindred and tongue and people and nation. He is worthy because, though Maker of worlds adored by angels, He left heaven, bore guilt and shame and the hiding of the Father's face, endured the cross for the joy of bringing many sons to glory, and lives again bearing the marks of Calvary as lasting testimony to redemption's price. The acclamation was fulfilled at His ascension when the Father accepted His sacrifice and He took His throne in triumph, it is sung in heaven over every repentant sinner, and it will break forth in immortal triumph at the second coming and remain the science and song of the saved through eternity on the earth made new. It is to be learned now by faith in homes and assemblies with thanksgiving, surrendering body and soul in willing service, weaving truth into character in mercy, unity and overcoming, so as to be prepared to join the heavenly choir.
Vision Scene Described
On Patmos was seen a vast host round about the throne with the living creatures and the elders, ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands in number, declaring with a loud voice that the slain Lamb is worthy to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and blessing. That acclamation was then taken up by every created thing in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, ascribing blessing and honour and glory and dominion and power forever and ever to Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb. The four living creatures answered Amen, and the elders fell down in worship before Him who lives forever and ever. The outburst follows the taking of the sealed book from the right hand of Him who sits on the throne, and it follows the new song of the four living creatures and twenty-four elders with harps and golden vials of the prayers of the saints.
The acclamation belongs to the sealed book, even the sealed roll, which the slain Lamb alone was found worthy to take and open through victory and sacrificial death. That book contains God's authority and counsel, His words and commandments and laws, and the course of His providences. It holds the prophetic and symbolic history of nations and the church and of ruling powers from the beginning of earth's history to its close.
The scene presents the life and character and mediatorial work of Christ, revealing infinite wisdom and infinite love and infinite justice and infinite mercy, with depths and heights and lengths and breadths that require eternity fully to know. It is a large and comprehensive theme worthy of contemplation, which all the angelic hosts are now seeking to communicate, a truth capable of constant expansion that grows brighter and higher and deeper as it is beheld. It stands at the center of the solemn truths of Revelation that are to be proclaimed, and belongs to God's highest teaching alongside the commandments spoken at Sinai, to be read and studied with skill and presented in simplicity and plainness to bring light and instruction and lead to the waters of life.
The chapter is to be studied in connection with Ezekiel 9 and Ezekiel 2:1-10, showing that the Lord's eye is upon every transaction and that His judgment will come upon wrongdoing unless there is repentance. Its melody is the praise of heaven to God and the Lamb, sounding forth from myriads, celebrating the great plan of redemption and the matchless love that moved God to give His only begotten Son so that whoever believes should not perish but have everlasting life. Believers are therefore to stand under the shadow of the cross where the beams of the Sun of Righteousness shine, exalt the Redeemer rather than exalting science, let praise flow from their lips instead of remaining dumb, and look for God to disclose more and more of that wonderful power and open new lines of thought about it to His church.
Why Lamb Is Worthy
He is worthy because He was slain, and His sacrificial death brings pardon and everlasting life to those who suffered and worked with Him after conflict and tribulation end. The praise celebrates that through His death humanity is redeemed to have life that measures with the life of God, voiced in heaven when conflict and tribulation are over. His sacrifice purchased the redeemed to live in His presence forever, and His victory is celebrated as triumphant conqueror when the conflict is over.
He is worthy because He triumphed over the prince of darkness and conquered death and the grave, a victory that brings joy through heaven and grants Him supreme place. The glad shout rings through the courts of heaven when, escorted upward by the heavenly host with songs of joy and triumph and welcomed through the opened portals of the City of God, He takes His position upon the throne of the Father surrounded by His majestic commander's host. With deepest adoration and joy the hosts of angels bow before Him and declare Him worthy, with songs of triumph mingled with music from angelic harps till heaven overflows with harmony and inconceivable joy and praise. The reception honors His triumph over Satan, death and the grave and celebrates His place on the Father's throne immediately after His ascension as He enters escorted by the heavenly host and by those raised from the dead with Him.
He is worthy because by His blood He redeemed people to God out of every kindred and tongue and people and nation and made them kings and priests to live in His presence. The new song rings through the arches of heaven as praise and thanksgiving when Christ and those who labored together with God see the souls they sought to win saved, eternally saved, as monuments of God's mercy and a Redeemer's love. Faithful soul-winners rejoice to see their labor bear fruit, showing the Redeemer glorified because He did not die in vain and His workers satisfied in the travail of their souls for perishing sinners, with all anxious hours and perplexing circumstances and sorrow over those who refused peace forgotten. In heaven the saved give the glory to Christ, not to any human being, and sing triumphantly to Him as the one whose death wins them to God and heaven.
He is worthy for the wonderful work that held the world fast, broke Satan's rule, drew it back into favor, freed the earth from sin's curse and united earth to heaven and finite man to the infinite God. All the heavenly host, cherubs and seraphs, sang when by His life and death of humiliation He held the world fast, drew it back into favor with God, and proclaimed Satan's death sentence. When the conflict is over forever the redeemed host will sing it again as a rich, full anthem rising from immortal voices without a discordant note, because salvation had been opened to fallen humanity.
He is worthy because He endured the cross and despised the shame for the joy of bringing many sons to glory, and He is satisfied beholding the redeemed renewed in His image. The white-robed ones about the throne sing when He occupies His rightful position glorified above principalities and powers and every name that is named, after the great sacrifice of the Father and the Son in man's behalf has been clearly presented and God's wisdom, justice and goodness stand fully vindicated before the assembled multitudes of the righteous and the wicked. He suffered and died to purchase the redeemed with His blood that they might dwell in His presence throughout eternal ages, and greater than His sorrow and shame is His joy and glory as He looks upon them renewed in His own image, every heart bearing the perfect impress of the divine and every face reflecting the likeness of their King. He beholds in them the result of the travail of His soul, is satisfied, presents them as the purchase of His blood, and leads His redeemed children purchased by His blood through the pearly gates to present them without spot or wrinkle.
He is worthy because, though Maker of worlds and Beloved of God adored by cherub and seraph, He left heaven as an exile, humbled Himself, bore guilt and shame and the hiding of the Father's face till a lost world's woes broke His heart on Calvary, facing the risk of failure and eternal loss. When the redeemed stand with Him before God's throne and see the glory of their eternal home, they will recognize the cost and in gratitude cast their crowns at His feet. In Christ glorified they behold Christ crucified, never forgetting that He whose power created and upheld unnumbered worlds, the Majesty of heaven and Arbiter of all destinies, laid aside His glory from love to man to uplift fallen man, beholding the eternal glory of the Father shining in His countenance and His throne from everlasting to everlasting with a kingdom that will have no end. They declare Him worthy because He was slain and redeemed them to God by His own most precious blood, to the everlasting wonder and adoration of the universe.
He is worthy as the slain Lamb who lives again as triumphant Conqueror, still bearing the marks of Calvary and earthly humiliation as lasting testimony to redemption's price. Though His life had no worldly wealth, honor or display, and He was despised for His humility, holiness and purity, He will be seen in the grandeur of heaven and the unsurpassed glory of His Father as an honored king, escorted by all the heavenly host with songs of victory, majesty and might. Those who thirsted for His blood, mocked, struck and spit upon Him will behold Him bright as the noonday sun and wail and seek to flee, compelled to acknowledge His majesty and exceeding glory. The proclamation follows the Father's acceptance of His sacrifice and grants Him the worship once held back until that acceptance was confirmed, through which the church is justified and accepted and His people share His glory and humanity is joined to God. His death as sin-atoning Saviour gives immortal life, and appreciating that sacrifice brings people into harmony with heaven, which is the reason heaven honors Him with power, riches, wisdom, strength, honour, glory, blessing, authority and dominion.
Singers Offering Worship
Countless angels bow before Him with deepest adoration, cast their glittering crowns at His feet, touch golden harps and fill all heaven with rich music and songs to the Lamb who was slain yet lives again in majesty and glory, till the courts echo and re-echo with harmony and inconceivable joy. This outburst is the Father's answer to Christ's appeal for His people, proclaimed as a command for all the angels of God to worship Him, joyfully sung by the leaders of the heavenly host in adoration of the Redeemer declaring the slain Lamb worthy to receive full honor and blessing. It was heard when Christ ascended after His resurrection with the multitude of risen captives and the heavenly host, holding back the angels from worshiping Him until He heard from the Father that His sacrifice was accepted, then entering the city of God amid the gate dialogue proclaiming Him the King of glory while an innumerable company waited to welcome Him. In that lovely and glorious worship the angels cease singing to take their crowns from their heads and cast them glittering at His feet, crying with melodious voices in praise and honor to the Lamb, surrounded by unutterable glory that is a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory laid up as treasure for the faithful little remnant who love God and keep His commandments and are faithful to the end, who will ever be in the presence of Jesus and sing with the holy angels.
The redeemed in white raiment join that praise, casting their crowns at the Redeemer's feet, touching golden harps and filling heaven with songs to the Lamb, entering the city and receiving crowns of glory and life that all earthly riches cannot buy. Those who shared Christ's work and suffered for Him cast their crowns before Him and praise Him as their Redeemer, and this honor continues forever after conflict and strife are over. With immortal tongues they will sing in eternity forever and ever for the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, declaring His worthiness out of gratitude for His redeeming sacrifice, and winning even one such voice for that eternal praise repays every sacrifice made on earth to save souls. Their acclaim belongs to the glad day when the redeemed enter God's kingdom and are gathered home, when the ransomed shout as those brought into right relation to God by words spoken to them and by influence through Christ that led them to accept truth of heavenly origin, who will then turn to the ones who labored for them to acknowledge that influence. The slain Lamb who lives again as triumphant Conqueror is thus worthy of praise as the redeemed join heaven's song.
All heaven's inhabitants praise God and the Lamb seated on the throne, their voices in perfect harmony. The redeemed sing His worthiness and proclaim salvation to God and the Lamb, while the angels answer with praise to God for blessing, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honor, power, and might.
Adam discerns the nail prints of the crucifixion, and instead of embracing Him casts himself and his crown at Jesus' feet in humiliation declaring the slain Lamb worthy, bearing witness that by those marks the Son of God redeemed humanity from failure and fall. Through the atonement Adam is redeemed and reinstated in his first dominion, restored to Eden more lovely than when banished, shown its trees and vines and flowers of innocence, led to the tree of life to eat its fruit, and shown a multitude of his redeemed family standing in the Paradise of God. Then transported with joy he casts his glittering crown at Jesus' feet, embraces the Redeemer, and sings of the slain Lamb who lives again, a song taken up by the whole family of Adam as they cast their crowns at the Saviour's feet and bow before Him in adoration, joining the redeemed host whose gratitude for restored Paradise lost through disobedience and received through repentance and faithful obedience swells the worship.
The song is the song of the Lamb, the song of grace and redemption, sung in heaven in louder, loftier, more sublime strains with Christ as the center of the church's history on earth and the redeemed church in heaven. It joins the song of Moses in praise of God's providence through the different dispensations, whose meaning is then fully seen, and it is a new song never before sung in heaven. It is also the song of the bridal celebration, with countless harps joining heart and voice in honoring Him. Its themes are praise and thanksgiving sung by the heavenly choir round about the throne, flushed with the glory of God, and the Redeemer leads believers to the threshold of the Infinite to catch those themes, so that when the echo of the angels' song is awakened in earthly homes hearts are drawn closer to the heavenly singers and heaven's communion begins on earth where its people learn the keynote of its praise, for singing is an act of worship joining earthly worship to heaven's praise.
The heavenly choir joins God's servants on earth, and believers join their own songs of praise to the songs of angels before the throne. Those walking the steep road to eternal life find wellsprings of joy to refresh them, and those who walk in wisdom's ways are exceeding joyful even in tribulation because Christ walks invisibly beside them, with His hand discerned more distinctly at each upward step and brighter gleamings of glory from the Unseen falling upon the path, till their songs reach ever a higher note ascending to join the songs before the throne. The angels' praise accompanies the victories and honors won as Christians fight the good fight of faith under their Redeemer's banner, and this worship around God's throne honoring the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world is echoed in the saints' assemblies and in sanctuary worship of the Lamb forever, glimpsed through spiritual understanding. Angels sing rapturous praise to God and to the Lamb as they watch what Jesus is doing in His church on earth, though evils exist in it until the end and the church in the last days is enfeebled and defective, needing reproof, warning, and counsel, yet Christ bestows His supreme regard on it as the light of a world polluted and demoralized by sin and as the workshop where through cooperation of human and divine agencies He works by grace and divine mercy upon human hearts. Their amazed, joyful response beholds transformation of character in those who yield themselves to God: those by nature children of wrath converted and becoming laborers together with Christ in drawing souls to God, those in darkness becoming lights to shine amid the moral night of this wicked and perverse generation, and those becoming prepared by a Christlike experience to suffer with their Lord and afterward to be partakers with Him in His glory in heaven above. So the choir above joins the redeemed army below in songs of praise and thanksgiving to God and to Jesus the Son of God while God's servants carry forward aggressive warfare with gospel truth under apparently discouraging circumstances, winning new conquests over idolatry and heathenism and new honors as they rally round the banner of the Redeemer and raise the standard of truth, expressing the connection of the church on earth with the church in heaven through faithful ones who receive precious gifts to become laborers together with God and through all the angelic messengers serving humble believers on earth.
Fulfilment Across Time
The shout was fulfilled at the ascension when Christ, escorted upward by the heavenly host with songs of joy and triumph and with those raised from the dead with Him, entered through the opened portals of the City of God and took His position upon the throne of the Father. He held back the worship of the angelic throng until the Father answered with acceptance of His sacrifice in the words let all the angels worship Him, and then with deepest adoration and joy the hosts bowed before Him and declared the slain Lamb worthy to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing. Their songs of triumph mingled with music from angelic harps till heaven overflowed with harmony and inconceivable joy and praise, proclaiming that the Son of God had triumphed over the prince of darkness and conquered death and the grave and now lives again in majesty and glory.
It had echoed and re-echoed through the worlds when Christ arose from the tomb enshrouded with a cloud of angels in wondrous power and glory as Deity and humanity combined. The singing by angel and archangel, cherubim and seraphim, celebrated His amazing achievement in taking in His grasp the world Satan claimed as his lawful territory and in restoring the whole race to favor with God by giving His life.
That same future shout on the threshold of eternity sustained the Son in His betrayal and trial, for He saw the travail of His soul satisfied in the happiness of those who through His humiliation would receive pardon and everlasting life that measures with the life of God. He heard the redeemed, after conflict and tribulation and strife are ended, united with the angels around the throne of God, casting their crowns at the feet of the Redeemer and proclaiming Him worthy to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing as the triumphant Conqueror who was slain and lives again. There the redeemed greet those who directed them to the uplifted Saviour and unite in songs of victory, having counted it a privilege and honor to suffer and cooperate with Christ in this life.
It is sung in heaven over one sinner who repents and is humbled and contrite before God, when self is humbled, Satan loses his hold on the human agent and suffers defeat, and Christ gains a victory as another heart is conquered by mercy and love while all heaven watches the conflict. Whenever a sinner is brought back to God all heaven rejoices and praises God and the Lamb for mercy and loving-kindness to humanity, joining the praise due the slain Lamb for His sacrifice.
It will break forth as the song of triumph of immortal beings at the second coming, when Christ comes with the sound of a trumpet and calls the dead from their prison house. Then vile mortal corruptible bodies are changed to holy, glorious, immortal, incorruptible flesh like His glorious body, for holy flesh with this mortal putting on immortality and this corruptible putting on incorruption is not received in this life while sin is forgiven but its results remain. At that moment the angelic host united with those waiting to receive Him hail Him as divine Conqueror in complete reversal of His first-coming humiliation, with no crown of thorns but a crown of glory, no mock kingly robe but a robe whiter than the whitest white, no cry of crucify Him but universal acclamation, His nail-bruised hands shining like gold and His eyes like flame searching creation through. The same Jesus who ascended and now lives as intercessor and advocate with the Father will be beheld in His beauty, admired in all them that believe, seeing the travail of His soul and satisfied, crowning those who waited for and loved Him with glory and honor and immortality and eternal life, raising the righteous dead and catching up the living to meet Him in the air to be ever with Him and welcoming them into the kingdom prepared from the foundation of the earth with the declaration that their warfare is accomplished.
It is the welcome of those who cooperated with Christ and counted suffering and reproach a privilege, receiving heaven's welcome, casting their crowns at the Redeemer's feet and joining the angels in honoring Him forever when conflict is over. It is the victory song of the redeemed standing around the throne when all tribulation and strife are at an end, greeting those who led them to the Saviour and praising Him who died that human beings might have life that measures with the life of God and lives again as triumphant conqueror, till songs of victory fill all heaven. It is the song of triumph that will fill all heaven when Christ enters the heavenly courts accompanied by His redeemed ones as trophies of victory and living witnesses that His mission of suffering and sacrifice was not in vain, angels touching golden harps welcoming the King while the redeemed washed and made white in the blood of the Lamb shine forth in the glory of the Father and the Son.
It remains the science and song of the saved nations through eternity on the earth made new, the song of victory and immortal triumph sung standing with the Redeemer by the throne of God. Its full realization of the cost of redemption and capacity to appreciate the value of immortal life and the eternal reward will not come until then, for His sacrifice will remain the subject of wonder and praise as they increasingly understand what salvation cost and learn more of His character. As they behold the Father's glory in His face and His endless kingdom, their devotion and joy grow ever fuller without discord, celebrating Christ crucified in Christ glorified.
Doctrine Lived Today
The verse acknowledges Christ as Prince of life, supreme over heaven's rulers, powers and angels, glorified above every name, with His victory bringing joy and praise throughout heaven.
The Father's acceptance of the sacrifice justifies and accepts the church through Christ as its representative and head, ratifying the covenant to receive repentant and obedient people through His merits.
That acceptance is followed by angels worshiping Him as the slain and risen Lamb, triumphant Conqueror who lives again, worthy of honor and worship.
All authority is given to Him, and He receives power and glory while securing His people's share in His glory and kingdom and reign, returning to impart power and glory to His disciples.
The slain Lamb enthroned is worthy to dispense the priceless covenant blessings and gifts purchased by His sacrifice, possessing all power to give people His righteousness by faith to those who believe.
His atoning sacrifice remains effective through every age for the sins of the whole world, its power undiminished by passing centuries, and He pleads in heaven for the church on behalf of those redeemed by His blood.
Those who receive His righteousness are led to obey all God's commandments, and this gospel of grace is to be proclaimed clearly to the world as the third angel's message with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus alone as the slain Lamb is worthy to receive honor, glory, majesty, blessing and praise, alone able to forgive sins and mediate between people and God and save completely, His blood washing away sins.
Glory therefore goes to the Lamb, not to people who claim to have loved, washed or redeemed themselves, while the saved look forward to joining God's family in His kingdom and praising Him with songs.
His self-sacrificing death for humanity reveals God's love in giving His Son to die, embodies God, and displays divine wisdom and power in the plan of salvation beyond finite understanding.
Through His self-sacrificing love and purity and merits people may obtain salvation and immortal life.
Heaven's praise and hallelujahs declaring Him worthy of authority, power, dominion and glory accompany and answer God's just sentence and judgment that Satan and his followers and those aligned with him will be utterly consumed, celebrating Christ's victory.
Every privilege and benefit and blessing enjoyed in this world came through His sacrifice in our behalf, as the future triumphant company of the redeemed will acknowledge when casting crowns at His feet and crying worthy is the Lamb slain and living again.
In light of that sacrifice and coming acknowledgment God in mercy now invites full surrender of body, soul and spirit to His service, requiring in return for His infinite sacrifice a whole sacrifice in willing and doing.
The heavenly anthem with thanksgiving as keynote can and must be sung and learned on earth now by faith in homes, families and assemblies in preparation for joining the heavenly choir.
It is the redeemed and angels' song of victory proclaiming the slain and living Lamb worthy to receive power, riches, wisdom, strength, honour, glory and blessing, sung by those who cast crowns at Jesus' feet and praise Him for salvation with immortal tongues.
They had learned it on earth by fixing eyes on Christ, relying on His strength, seeking victory and receiving victory through Him, carrying the song every day after receiving immortality and while preparing for heaven.
It is a real heavenly scene to be contemplated and regarded as real now by faith, with the sight of crowns laid up for overcomers, and dwelling on Christ and the heavenly world and listening to the song gives powerful stimulus and support for fighting the Lord's battles against temptation and evil.
Beholding those crowns encourages believers in struggles, and beside Christ's loveliness and the glories of the better land soon to be home, pride and love of the world lose power, earthly attractions seem of little worth, and talk is of Jesus with praise from heart, soul and voice instead of self and worldly things.
Music forms part of God's worship in the courts above where heavenly choirs sing praise in harmony, and earthly songs should endeavor to approach as nearly as possible to that heavenly harmony.
Proper training of the voice is therefore an important feature in education not to be neglected, for singing as part of religious service is as much an act of worship as prayer.
The heart must feel the spirit of the song to give it right expression, and music serves a holy purpose to lift thoughts to what is pure, noble and elevating and to awaken devotion and gratitude to God.
Seeing by faith His matchless charms outweighing all earthly treasures, with looking to His cross enough, calls everyone to accept the salvation offered at Calvary.
Everyone has something to do to gain the victory, each to do their part, and all who come off victors will join in proclaiming the loving Saviour slain for us worthy to receive power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory and blessing.
He is seen standing before the Father's throne holding out wounded hands pleading for souls perishing in sins because He was slain and redeemed people to God, which calls for putting away every idol, giving no time to frivolity or unwise expenditure of means, using means and every penny to send truth to needy ones and accomplish good, daily gaining increase of strength, looking to crowns for overcomers and preparing for the Lord's coming.
Those who helped bring people to Christ through Christ-guided influence join that praise, rejoicing that the saved are lasting witnesses to God's mercy and the Redeemer's love, and those led to truth will thank them for bringing them into right relation with God.
The faithful will hear Well done, thou good and faithful servant for going to work for the Master and taking the Lord with them, then in the sweet heaven of rest cast glittering crowns at Jesus' feet, touch harps and sing to the Lamb who died because they see matchless charms in Him, having part in eternal weight of glory and songs of rejoicing through endless ages.
Joining the anthem Worthy is the Lamb is a privilege for those prepared for God's temple and kingdom by weaving principles of truth into character, being at peace among one another, striving to see eye to eye and belonging to the royal King, whereupon God's blessing rests as on Solomon's Temple and light and truth go out to work upon hearts.
Keeping the law by showing mercy as neighbor to those in need prepares souls to have part in that singing after receiving crowns and entrance and welcome into the joy of the Lord, when with golden harps they praise the Lamb because He died that they might live and lives as triumphant Conqueror, with voices echoing and re-echoing to God's praise and glory.
Those whose sympathies and powers are corrupted, debased and untrained cannot join the heavenly host, for they would be out of harmony, unhappy in heaven and not at home among the pure and holy.
One dwarfed and crippled in divine things, occupied with selfish business and worldly enterprise, cannot mingle with the throng, share songs of love and joy beaming on every face with ceaseless streams of light from Him on the throne and from the Lamb, nor receive that high holy pure spiritual transporting glory overwhelming the unready where capacity grows to bear more and rise higher in eternal enjoyment of ceaseless glory and inexpressible bliss.
Only those who have trained the mind to delight in spiritual exercises, with self-denial and overcoming by His blood, can be translated to stand in that sacred purity and transcendent glory and blend into holy harmony.
