Revelation 5:13
And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
John in vision on Patmos heard every creature in heaven and earth and under the earth and in the sea join as one voice to give blessing and honor and glory and power forever to Him on the throne and to the Lamb together, as the climax of worship after the living creatures and elders and myriads of angels praised the Lamb for taking the sealed book. Its final fulfillment comes when sin and sinners are no more and the earth is restored as the eternal home of the redeemed, so that one pulse of harmony beats through a clean universe with no discord and no cries of torment mingled with the songs of the saved. The Lamb is worthy of this equal and universal honor because He was slain and by His blood redeemed people out of every kindred and tongue and nation and made them kings and priests, triumphing over the prince of darkness and over death and the grave. United with angels around the throne, the redeemed cast their crowns at the Redeemer's feet and fill heaven with music to the Lamb, growing in love and joy as eternity brings richer revelations of God and of redemption's riches. Christ's followers are therefore to learn that song now and sing heaven's praise on earth in readiness to join the heavenly choir, for only minds trained to delight in spiritual things can feel at home in that holy harmony.
Vision Setting and Wording
What John beheld and heard on Patmos reaches its climax when the Lamb takes the sealed book and every created thing joins the worship. First the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders with harps and vials of prayers praise Him for redeeming by His blood people out of every kindred and tongue and nation and making them kings and priests, then myriads of angels around the throne cry that the slain Lamb is worthy to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing. Then every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea joins in one voice, and the four living creatures answer Amen while the elders fall down and worship Him who lives forever and ever.
The wording gathers all creatures in heaven, on earth, under the earth, and in the sea into a single ascription of blessing and honor and glory and power and dominion forever and ever. It is directed together to Him who sits upon the throne and to the Lamb, giving both equal and universal honor. That joint honor celebrates the Lamb's worthiness and saving work and the future scene of victory when conflict and tribulation end and the redeemed are gathered home.
The book the Lamb takes from the hand of Him who sits on the throne is the roll of God's providences. It contains the prophetic history and destiny of nations and the church, divine utterances, authority, commandments, laws, the whole symbolic counsel of the Eternal, and the history, influence and destiny of every ruling power, nation, tongue and people from the beginning of earth's history to its close. It is written within and without with no blanks and no space for more writing, and as it is taken and unrolled all who look upon it are filled with awe. The Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, prevails to open it, and the slain Lamb with seven horns and seven eyes takes it, and the universal praise honors both the One on the throne and the Lamb.
The chapter belongs especially to those serving God in the last days and presses upon them the coming judgment and accountability for works. It is to be studied in connection with Ezekiel 9 and Ezekiel 2:1-10, showing that the Lord's eye is upon every transaction and that judgment will come upon stealing and wrongdoing, with the wrongdoer's name written unless he repents.
The vision is essential truth about Christ to be presented in simplicity for present and eternal good, instructing and bringing light with every word. It reveals the life and character of Christ and His mediatorial work, displaying infinite wisdom, infinite love, infinite justice and infinite mercy. It holds large and comprehensive lessons worthy of contemplation, with depth and height and length and breadth that will require eternity fully to know. All the angelic host are now seeking to communicate these themes, and through the Holy Spirit they are presented fresh and new to every mind.
Time and Fulfillment
The universal praise fills heaven when Christ, having triumphed over the prince of darkness and conquered death and the grave, ascends and takes His position upon the throne of the Father. He is welcomed into the heavenly courts and city amid deepest adoration and joy, with songs of triumph mingled with music from angelic harps till heaven overflows with harmony and inconceivable joy. After the Father accepts His sacrifice and grants that those given Him be with Him where He is, the Father commands all the angels to worship Him, and they bow in adoration before the King of glory and make heaven ring with triumph. Then heaven rings with voices in lofty strains ascribing blessing and honor and glory and power forever and ever both to Him that sitteth upon the throne and unto the Lamb.
When His triumph was assured, the heavenly beings and the hosts of unfallen worlds praised God and the Lamb for opening salvation to fallen humanity and redeeming the earth from sin's curse. The verse also pictures the future blessedness of heaven after the conflict and suffering of this life have ended, when tribulation and strife are over. Those who in this life cooperated with Christ and counted it a privilege and honor to suffer for His sake receive a gracious welcome as they stand on the threshold of eternity. United with the angels around the throne, the redeemed cast their crowns at the feet of the Redeemer and join in songs of victory, honoring the Lamb who was slain and lives again as triumphant Conqueror, who died that human beings might have life that measures with the life of God.
Its final fulfillment comes when sin and sinners are no more, the wicked are destroyed so that they become as though they had not been, the earth is restored as the eternal home of the redeemed, and the entire universe is clean. This is typified by the Feast of Tabernacles as the feast of harvest after the great day of final ingathering, when the Lord of the harvest sends forth His reapers to gather the tares in bundles for the fire and to gather the wheat into His garner. Then every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea joins in one universal anthem without discord, and one pulse of harmony and gladness beats through creation. No lost souls remain to blaspheme God, no beings in hell mingle their cries of torment with the songs of the saved, and the wicked have no place in the universe of God.
It is sung after Christ returns and brings His people to their promised home and after they enter the New Jerusalem as sons and daughters of the Most High, not as convicts, welcomed by the Father to His bosom and crowned by Christ's own hand. Sung in the kingdom of glory as the song of Moses and the Lamb showing forth the matchless charms of the Redeemer, it echoes and reechoes through the courts of heaven. The Lamb sits beside the Father on the throne and presents those He rescued from death through His own life, whom He will raise from their graves at His second coming, and the crowns He places on them signify the redeemed of every nation and tongue and people. As Christ enters the heavenly courts with the redeemed, welcomed by angels with golden harps, they are His trophies of victory and witnesses that His suffering and sacrifice were not in vain, and seeing the marks of Calvary in His glorified body they find their greatest joy in His presence.
Grounds for Praising Christ
The Lamb is worthy of this universal honor because He was slain and by His precious blood redeemed people to God out of every kindred and tongue and nation and made them kings and priests. The redeemed honor Him for that saving death and victory, casting their crowns before Him and acclaiming Him with harps as the triumphant Conqueror who died and lives again. Their song celebrates the pardon and everlasting life made possible through His humiliation, sacrifice, death and victorious resurrection, a salvation whose sight sustained Him through His suffering.
The praise proclaims His triumph over the prince of darkness and His victory over death and the grave, in which the lost are found, love has conquered, and His supremacy is acknowledged with everlasting glory and power and honor and blessing. Then the cost of the redemption of the race will be fully realized, when the redeemed stand with the Redeemer by the throne of God. As they gain capacity to appreciate the value of immortal life and the worth of their eternal reward, they swell the song of victory and immortal triumph to the Lamb who was slain.
Christ remains marked by the suffering and death He endured for humanity, and His wounds remain as lasting signs of the cruelty suffered and the price of human redemption. His sin-atoning death gives immortal life, and understanding that sacrifice brings people into closer harmony with heaven. Those who mocked and killed Him will see Him as King in glory and be overwhelmed, compelled by His majesty to acknowledge His kingly authority. The redeemed will see the marks of Calvary in His glorified body and find their greatest joy in His presence.
The Lamb shares the throne and receives the same everlasting praise and honor as the Father, seated upon the throne with power to give the covenant blessings and righteousness purchased by His death. His sacrifice remains fully effective through every age and never diminishes in value, and He pleads in heaven for the church and for those redeemed at the cost of His life. His power and merits are the ground of salvation for everyone who believes. He alone is worthy to receive honor and glory and majesty, for He alone can forgive sin and mediate between people and God, in contrast to honor given to images.
The verse shows the final outcome of the plan of salvation, by which not only man but his lost dominion, the earth itself usurped by the enemy, is redeemed and all that was lost through sin is restored. At last one song of love rises throughout the universe because through the revelation of the character of God in Christ the beneficence of the divine government is manifested, the charge of Satan is refuted, and the nature and result of sin are made plain. The perpetuity of the law is fully demonstrated against Satan's declaration that the law was faulty and that the good of the universe demanded a change in its requirement. By attacking the law he thought to overthrow the authority of its Author and gain supreme allegiance for himself, but through the plan of salvation its precepts are proved perfect and immutable.
The salvation of souls won to Jesus makes the Redeemer's suffering fruitful, for as He leads His blood-bought church without spot through the gates and looks upon them He sees the travail of His soul and is satisfied. The crowns He places on them signify the redeemed of every nation and tongue and people whom He rescued from death and will raise from their graves. The saved and those who labored to bring them to Jesus join heaven's shouts of praise and thanksgiving.
Universal Worship Without Discord
Every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea joins in one mighty chorus of praise to Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever. Ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of voices unite and sweep golden harps in that swelling praise. Heaven is a high, holy state of perfection where its inhabitants praise God and the Lamb in perfect harmony, with high and melodious music, love filling souls and joy beaming upon every countenance. Ceaseless streams of light flow from the face of Him who sits upon the throne and from the Lamb upon the saints, giving inexpressible glory and bliss, with ever-increasing capacity to receive and rise higher in eternal enjoyment from ceaseless supplies.
That same melody of heaven is praise to God and the Lamb, and it should flow from human lips now rather than silence. Only those who on earth have trained the mind to delight in spiritual exercises and learned the language of heaven can mingle with the heavenly throng, share their songs, and receive the high purity and exalted glory emanating from God and the Lamb, while one suddenly transported while satisfied with dwarfed spiritual life and taken up with selfish business could not share it. There is no note of discord, for no lost souls remain to blaspheme God or mingle cries of torment with songs of the saved. Those who perish with the wicked will not share the ceaseless praise the redeemed will offer through endless ages to God and the Lamb.
Every man and woman met daily is Judgment-bound with only two outcomes, to share in that endless praise or to perish with the wicked, for whom Christ suffered and died that they might enjoy a blissful eternity of praise. The wicked, whose characters are fixed in hatred of God, truth and holiness, could not join this praise or endure the glory and holiness of heaven. Its purity and peace would be torment to them, and they would long to flee from God's presence, so their exclusion by their own choice is just and merciful. From the minutest atom to the greatest world, all things animate and inanimate in unshadowed beauty and perfect joy join the praise and declare that God is love.
One pulse of harmony and gladness beats through the vast creation when sin and sinners are no more and the entire universe is clean, as life and light and gladness flow from Him who created all throughout the realms of illimitable space. Heaven is a peaceful kingdom where vast numbers of holy beings live in happy intimacy, seek one another's happiness, and show greatness by humility, gratitude and love. As the years of eternity bring richer and more glorious revelations of God and of Christ, progressive knowledge increases love and reverence and happiness and admiration of His character. As Jesus opens before the ransomed the riches of redemption and the amazing achievements and victory won in the great controversy with Satan, their hearts thrill with more fervent devotion and more rapturous joy, and their praise grows ever stronger.
Redeemed Share in Praise
United with angels around the throne, the redeemed cast their glittering crowns at the Redeemer's feet, touch golden harps, and fill all heaven with rich music and songs to the Lamb, exclaiming His worthiness as the One slain for their saving work. They ascribe blessing and honor and glory and power forever to Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb together, joining in songs of triumph around the great white throne. Those brought to God through faithful labor are especially heard in this praise, having been washed in His blood and saved with everlasting salvation. The redeemed who are brought to the city of God swell this same music, for the verse embraces the final song of all who are saved in the kingdom.
After the Lamb opens the gates of the city of God for all nations that kept the truth, He places a crown of glory on each head, pronounces His blessing, and places a golden harp in each hand, having suffered every phase of temptation and suffering for them on the cross. They enter through gates swung back on glittering hinges, each saved person receiving the harp and joining until all heaven is filled with rich music and songs of praise and thanksgiving to the Lamb. Faithful families enter eternal life together, with parents presenting children led heavenward, and angels unite in the songs of triumph, while again and again the entrants cast their crowns at the feet of Jesus and give Him the glory. On the new earth where Eden is restored, Jesus leads them beside the living stream flowing from the throne of God and explains the dark providences that perfected their characters, and there they cast at the Redeemer's feet the crowns He placed on their heads. Overcomers who sought glory and honor and immortality receive crowns and white robes as reward decided by how they treated Christ in fallen humanity, beholding the King in His beauty and abiding to go no more out forever in life eternal, and living the life of Christ now, making life a heaven to self and others by helping and lifting the cast down, is the way to enter that heaven hereafter. Entering into that praise is graduating into a higher school that requires readiness now.
Their song is the song of Moses and the Lamb, celebrating grace and redemption, with the matchless charms of the Redeemer echoing through heaven's courts. It is a new song never before sung in heaven, louder and more sublime, with Christ as the center of church history and of the legal, prophetic, and gospel dispensations.
They assemble in the heavenly sanctuary from Sabbath to Sabbath and from one new moon to another to unite in loftier songs of thanksgiving and praise to God on the throne and to Christ forever. Through ceaseless ages their powers with heart and tongue dwell on His incarnation and atoning sacrifice, which will be the science and song of eternity and the angels' theme to be studied now. Their lasting life comes through Christ's life-giving power, as those made alive by Him live forever, appearing as grace has made them while worldly wealth, fame, renown, and selfish exaltation pass away. Gathering now in God's house with songs of praise, fervent prayer, lessons of God's wondrous works, grateful hearts, and perfect love fits dwellers of earth for the mansions Christ has gone to prepare and for that unending worship.
Those brought to God through another's Christ-led influence join this praise and then thank those whose words and influence through Christ led them to accept heavenly truth, embracing them and acknowledging how they were brought into right relation to God. All praise, honor, and glory for redemption is directed to God and the Lamb, and gratitude to the human instruments God employed in saving souls ready to perish does not lessen God's glory or detract from Him. The heavenly song gives no glory to self but honors God as the one worthy of praise, so giving glory to finite people in Christ's place dishonors God.
The young who are saved stand around the throne in the spotless robes of Christ's righteousness, wearing the crown of life, and add their happy voices to the victorious song that resounds through heaven in honor and glory and majesty to God and the Lamb. The faithful remnant who love God, keep His commandments, and remain faithful to the end join the heavenly angels in praising Jesus whose glory is beyond measure, sharing His immeasurable glory and living forever in His presence. The Holy Spirit disciplines and purifies people so they may be fitted for the society of saints and angels and join in that final song of redemption. The heavenly choir around God's throne is echoed in the bridal song of ten thousand harps joining in praise to the Lamb, whose songs can be spiritually discerned through study of God's Word, meditation, and prayer in thanksgiving to Jesus sent to take away the sin of the world.
Present Call to Preparation
Christ's followers are to learn the angels' song now so they can join the heavenly choir when their warfare is over, reflecting the love of the Father and the Son in preparation for sharing the universal praise to the One on the throne and to the Lamb. All the way up the steep road to eternal life there are wellsprings of joy to refresh the weary, for those who walk in wisdom's ways are exceedingly joyful even in tribulation because the One whom their soul loves walks invisibly beside them. At each upward step they discern the touch of His hand more distinctly and brighter gleamings of glory from the Unseen fall upon their path, and their songs of praise reach ever a higher note as they ascend to join the worship before the throne.
The melody of heaven is praise to God and the Lamb sounding forth from ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands, and it should flow from human lips on earth rather than silence. Believers are to talk less and exalt science less and self not at all, but exalt their Redeemer while standing under the shadow of the cross where the beams of the Sun of Righteousness shine directly. God is ready to open new lines of thought to His church about His wonderful power and the great plan of redemption, the matchless love that moved Him to give His only begotten Son that whoever believes should not perish but have everlasting life. Even one voice raised in praise to God and the Lamb is enough to show Christ is present and the heart is given to God, without regard to wealth or social standing.
Heavenly angels join the songs of God's people on earth in praise to God and His Son, so that earthly prayers and praise take part in heavenly worship and the voices of God's children unite with the angels to give honor, glory and praise for the great salvation provided. As the redeemed army on earth sings while carrying forward the last proclamation of gospel truth under discouraging circumstances, the choir above joins with them in thanksgiving. All angelic messengers are at the service of humble believing ones, faithful workers become laborers together with God, and the church below is thus connected with the church above in one act of worship. Heavenly beings are near and present among people and can teach the song on earth, and angels sing thanksgiving when believers labor faithfully and unselfishly.
Music forms part of God's worship in the courts above, where heavenly choirs sing together in harmony flushed with the glory of God, and human songs of praise should endeavor to approach as nearly as possible to that heavenly harmony. Proper training of the voice is an important feature of education that should not be neglected, and singing as part of religious service is as much an act of worship as prayer. The heart must feel the spirit of the song to give it right expression. When the echo of the angels' song is awakened in earthly homes, hearts are drawn closer to the heavenly singers, for heaven's communion begins on earth where its keynote of praise is learned.
Only those with purified sympathies can join the united song in which the pure and holy host ascribe praise to God and to the Lamb. Those whose sympathies are corrupt and debased, with darkened minds and untrained powers, cannot sing it because they are out of harmony with the heavenly host, would not feel at home in the society of the pure and holy, and would be unhappy in heaven. No one will be prepared to blend in that holy, happy harmony without previous training, so God's schools must be training schools for that kingdom, fitting students for God's service not only in this life but in the future immortal life. Making the knowledge essential to prepare a people to stand in the great day of God the all-important theme gives such schools a standing of no inferior order to other colleges and seminaries. Worshippers may by faith catch sight of the heavenly choir's song of thanksgiving as they contemplate heaven's temple, and seeing Christ as Advocate offering His merits brings a fuller sense of God's immense and varied love.
The vision is to be dear to the church to sustain faithful labor and suffering by the prospect of pardon, everlasting life, and reunion with those led to the Saviour, for heaven is now waiting for souls and breaks into singing as soon as they turn to the truth, with God Himself rejoicing over them. All heaven is made glad over one sinner who turns from sin in repentance toward God and faith toward Christ, with seraphs and cherubs touching their golden harps and singing praises to God and the Lamb for mercy and lovingkindness to the children of men, and this joy calls believers to greater earnestness. Angels rejoice in praise as they witness people transformed by divine grace, those once under sin becoming Christ's co-workers, lights in a morally dark world, prepared to suffer with Christ and share His glory. The conversion of souls through the spread of the gospel brings praise to the One seated on the throne, and those who share Christ's self-denial and sacrifice can help bring people to Him and may see them saved forever to join that praise. Believers are therefore to honor and thank God for His everlasting Gift given to die to save the world, sing all day long in their homes, labor with words that win souls to Jesus, share the treasures of present truth and give of their means in self-denial for its advancement, and live Christ's life now as heaven to self and others by lifting the downcast.
The church on earth should be full of joy and resounding praise in response to heaven full of joy over so wonderful a sacrifice for redemption, publishing throughout the world the joy of serving Christ. Those who will join with the angelic choir in that anthem must learn on earth the song of heaven, whose keynote is thanksgiving, by turning the mind away from love of self and the world and from dwelling on what to eat and drink and wear, trusting Christ's promise to provide, and by talking of heaven and giving praise to God now. All who have breath are called to praise the Lord and sing heaven's songs on earth in readiness to join the heavenly choir, talking of Christ's coming and of infinite love in the Son's infinite sacrifice, and loving one another. This praise belongs with the hope of inheriting the purified earth and living in the city of God after it descends, and points to the worship that can rise from a church marked by unity and reconciliation. Him who sits upon the throne is to receive thanksgiving and praise and honor with lifted hands.
