The Four Horsemen Ride Across the Plainby emmanuel_higgins

Revelation 6:5

And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.

Revelation 6 is full of meaning and reveals terrible judgments of God. It belongs to the Lord going forth to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity, when the earth discloses her blood and no longer covers her slain. Its judgment points forward to and culminates in the plagues of God upon the earth, when hail weighing about a talent will fall upon the wicked who would not obey God but insulted Him and despised His mercies.

Mercies are mixed with judgment, for the Lord has a people whom He will preserve. The pair of balances in the rider's hand are the balances of the sanctuary where God weighs every human work. Every transaction small or great, especially work done by institutions established to advance the cause of God, is registered in the books of heaven and compared with the great standard of righteousness, which is truth, strict equity, and the character of God expressed in His holy law.

Any deviation even in the smallest detail loses the divine favor and signet, is marked with condemnation, and is weighed and judged deficient. This includes one act of oppression, selfish dealing, injustice, or sharp practice to take unfair advantage of saint or sinner even to prosper the work.
