Revelation 9:11

And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

Revelation 9 foretells the history and overthrow of the Ottoman Empire. Its prophetic periods of 150 years followed by 391 years and fifteen days ended in August 1840, with Ottoman power in Constantinople broken on August 11, 1840. That breaking meant Turkey surrendered its independence on August 11, 1840, by accepting through its ambassadors the protection of the allied powers of Europe and placing itself under the control of Christian nations. Fulfillment at the very time specified proved the correctness of the principles of prophetic interpretation pointing to the second advent and gave impetus to the Advent Movement from 1840 to 1844.

The king over them who is the angel of the bottomless pit is the destroyer, who is Satan. As the destroyer, Satan works through human agents to entice people to sin and disguises sin in order to destroy souls and rob Christ of glory, and he can use professed Christians especially effectively, so that anyone who entices others to sin serves as his agent. In particular, a man who takes advantage of corrupt influence in a woman and by word or action confirms her in the ways of sin to gratify his passion has placed himself on Satan's side as a laborer together with Satan to corrupt and defile, indulging in sin whenever opportunity presents itself, and his name is registered in heaven as a corrupter, an unholy and defiled man.
