The verse foretells the fall of the Ottoman Empire at a fixed prophetic time, when the Ottoman power in Constantinople would be broken. Its hour and day and month and year are calculated as 391 years and fifteen days, which commence at the close of the first period of 150 years and end on August 11, 1840. The prediction was fulfilled at the very time specified, when Turkey through her ambassadors accepted the protection of the allied powers of Europe and thus surrendered its independence and placed itself under the control of Christian nations.
This exact fulfilment proves the correctness of the principles of prophetic interpretation adopted by Miller and his associates, convincing multitudes and strengthening confidence in those principles. The fulfilment gave a wonderful impetus to the Advent Movement from 1840 to 1844, as men of learning and position joined in preaching and publishing.
