Revelation 9, to which this verse belongs, foretells the fall of Ottoman Turkish power and its loss of independence. The prophetic time periods of that prophecy were reckoned to terminate on August 11, 1840. On that day the Turkish government surrendered its independence in fulfillment of the prediction. It did so by accepting the protection of the European powers and thereby coming under their protection and control.
