Revelation 9, including the opening of the bottomless pit and the rising smoke, foretells the history and overthrow of the Ottoman Empire. The prophecy works through measured prophetic time periods, a first period of 150 years followed by 391 years and fifteen days, ending on 11 August 1840 when Ottoman power in Constantinople would be broken. On that date the prediction was fulfilled when Turkey surrendered its independence and Ottoman power was broken.
This took place when Turkey through its ambassadors accepted the protection of the allied powers of Europe and placed itself under the control of Christian nations. Fulfillment at the specified time confirmed the correctness of the principles of prophetic interpretation.
