Romans 1:10

Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.

Paul's prayer was for a prosperous journey by the will of God to come to the believers at Rome, an object of long-standing hope, desire and continual prayer. He thanked God through Jesus Christ for them all, because their faith was spoken of throughout the whole world. He longed to see them to impart some spiritual gift to the end they might be established, that he might be comforted together with them by the mutual faith both of them and him.

The visit was desired so that he could witness for Christ, proclaim the gospel and win many people to the truth. He reached Rome as a prisoner, chained and treated as a criminal, in a way of going he had not expected. He thought his plans had been frustrated by Jewish hostility and feared those circumstances would hinder his witness and frustrate his hope.
