Romans 1:25

Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

To change the truth of God into a lie is to worship and serve the creature more than the Creator, exalting nature and its laws above nature's God and treating the grand things of the natural world as if they were God. Nature is not God and never was God, but His created work that bears testimony to His power, glory and love, as a fine workmanship points to the designer without being put above him. Knowledge of God drawn from created things alone is imperfect and cannot reveal His moral perfection, for nature is marred by sin and under a curse, so full knowledge requires the revelation He has made of Himself in Christ. This exchanging of truth for falsehood has always taken the form of giving to created things the worship belonging to the Creator alone, whether to sun, moon and stars, to images and groves, to human genius and works, or to false ideas of God enthroned in place of the living God. To reject God's truth in this way is to reject God Himself, leaving the mind blinded, the heart given to sinful desire, and the soul exposed to Satan's control until sin punishes sin.

Meaning of the Verse

Romans 1:25 belongs to the whole first chapter of Romans, which must be read and weighed and grasped in its particular meaning and given in its full force. It stands with the warning that the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of those who hold the truth in unrighteousness.

To change the truth of God into a lie is to worship and serve the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. It is done by exalting nature and the laws of nature above nature's God and supposing that the grand things of the natural world are God. Human wisdom without God does this, professing itself wise while becoming foolish and idolatrous.

Nature is not God and never was God. It is His created work, an open book and lesson book that bears testimony to His power and shows forth His glory, love, goodness, mercy, and skill as Master Artist. Like a fine work of human skill that delights the eye and gives an idea of the designer, yet the thing made is not the man and is not to be exalted above him, so nature is not to be exalted above the Lord. Knowledge of God drawn from created things alone is imperfect, giving no high thoughts of God and not lifting mind and soul and heart and life into agreement and conformity with His will. Nature itself is imperfect, under curse and blight and marred by sin, and in its imperfections does not represent God and cannot reveal His moral perfection. Perfect knowledge therefore requires the revelation God has made of Himself in Christ, the express image of His person and personal Saviour.

God's power is constantly revealed in nature as His servant and miracle-working power displaying His handiwork. Looking at nature should lead from nature to nature's God, to see an infinity above and beyond the things made and to know Him who formed man and created all the beauties of the natural world. In original perfection created things expressed God's thought and taught Adam and Eve about Him. But the sinfulness of humanity cast a pall and veil over creation, so that works made to manifest God became a barrier concealing Him. People ceased to discern God in His works, and even man's teaching, the sacrificial service, and the Scriptures themselves, all given to reveal God, were turned into means of concealing Him, until Christ came to draw aside the veil sin had cast over nature and bring to view again the spiritual glory all things were created to reflect.

Idolatry in Past Ages

Pagan philosophers once possessed a pure knowledge of God but fell into degeneracy, and that fall obscured their knowledge when they worshiped His handiwork in the sun, moon and stars instead of the Creator, professing themselves wise while becoming fools. Their ideas stand in striking contrast to the revelation of God in Genesis. Even so the uneducated heathen still learns through nature and through his own necessities, and dissatisfied with darkness reaches out for light searching for God as the first great cause. God speaks to the heathen in various ways recorded in Genesis.

Before the Flood men put God out of their knowledge and worshiped the creatures of their own imagination in revelry, until they denied His existence. They changed the truth into a lie by fixing their affections upon the gifts instead of the Giver, using His many rich bounties to glorify themselves until those bounties became a curse. They worshiped and served the creature more than the Creator by employing gold and silver, precious stones and choice wood with skillful workmanship to build and beautify their own dwellings to excel one another and gratify proud hearts, by reveling in pleasure and wickedness, by adoring nature in place of the God of nature, and by glorifying human genius. They worshiped the works of their own hands and taught their children to bow down to graven images, and they set up altars of idols in green fields and under trees, with extensive evergreen groves dedicated to false gods joined to beautiful gardens, winding avenues, fruit-bearing trees, statuary and all that could delight the senses and allure to idolatrous worship.

The religion of the Cain worshipers before the Flood trampled God's law underfoot and gave to created things the worship belonging to the Creator, while the descendants of Seth acknowledged the power and government and right of the living God to govern. God bore long with that perversity and iniquity until He declared He would bear with them no longer and fixed one hundred and twenty years as the end of their probation, sending the warning through Noah. Israel afterward gradually departed from God and scorned the Creator for created things, although they knew their idols could neither save nor destroy and knew heathen worship was contrary to reason. They persisted in sin until clear moral judgment was lost, and Satan led them astray.

In the last half century before the Assyrian captivity Israel fulfilled the exaltation of nature above the God of nature when in the worship of Baal and Ashtoreth the people paid supreme homage to the forces of nature. This rejection of God to give themselves wholly to evil-doing was the same iniquity as in the days of Noah and in every other age of apostasy, and it always results in the grossest of evils. By severing connection with all that is uplifting and ennobling, such worship breaks down the defenses of the soul, leaves worshipers with no barrier against sin, makes them an easy prey to temptation, and yields them to the evil passions of the human heart. The worship of Baal, the Phoenician sun-god, exemplifies this idolatry as it stood in ancient Israel in Elijah's time and as deifying nature while denying the God of nature persisted in the Christian world, whether by false ideas about God or by false doctrines and theories and a philosophical image enthroned in place of the living God revealed in Scripture, in Christ and in creation.

Men denied the Creator and gave the honor due to God to images made by human hands and to precious materials, trees and land provided for their benefit, turning gifts meant to lead them to glorify God into objects of worship. They dedicated beautiful groves to idols instead of worshiping the Creator there, and gave no thanks to their Maker, while God was rejected. Putting created things above God blinds men to the power, majesty and glory of the infinite God so that they represent Him by a graven image or even by a beast or reptile. They bow down to revolting and senseless objects no higher than themselves and symbolized by their own handiwork, forgetting their own divine relationship formed in the image of their Maker. Such worship destroys the efficacy of all worship because man cannot be elevated by adoring what is no higher than himself, and it opens the way for foul license with the evil passions of the heart unrestrained, giving Satan full sway as he seeks to wrench away God's chosen people in the very face of Heaven.

In the days of Christ men had well-nigh ceased to discern God in His works, for sinfulness had cast a pall and veil over creation so that works made to manifest God became a barrier concealing Him. Man's teaching was put in the place of God's, and nature, the sacrificial service and the Scriptures themselves, all given to reveal God, were turned into means of concealing Him until Christ came to draw aside the veil and bring to view again the spiritual glory all things were created to reflect. In the same perversion the Jewish leaders turned God's truth into a lie when they interpreted the words and works that testified to Christ's divinity as evidence against Him. Their ambition led them to reject the truth, and each further display of Christ's mercy made them more determined to resist the light.

Image worship sprang from the idolatrous tendency of the human heart to put created things above God, and this corruption of Christianity crept into the church stealthily and almost without notice under a fair disguise. It did not develop at once or it would have met decided censure and rebuke, but with one practice after another introduced so gradually the church became deeply steeped in practical idolatry without efficient opposition or decided remonstrance. When at length an endeavor was made to root it out the evil was found too deeply fixed to admit of removal. Images and pictures introduced as aids to instruction or devotion instead darkened understanding and redirected worship from God to created things.

Modern Forms of Idolatry

Rejecting the truth of God is rejecting God Himself, and misrepresenting His character leads to worshiping created things instead of the Creator. That idolatry is not only bowing to images but replacing the true God with false ideas about Him, with false doctrines and theories, and with a philosophical image of God enthroned in place of the living God revealed in Scripture, in Christ, and in creation. Deifying nature while denying the God of nature is idolatry even in the Christian world, differing in form from ancient Israel's worship in Elijah's day yet the same in principle.

That modern idolatry takes the form of false ideas about God rather than only images of wood or stone, turning from the Author of truth to give worship to created things instead of the Creator. The false god so revered by many educated and influential people is compared to Baal, the ancient Phoenician sun-god. Extolling human reason above divine revelation and exalting nature while forgetting the God of nature ensnares through what is called science those who cannot be drawn by pleasure. Wherever an influence causes men to forget their Creator, that is magic and sorcery, the work of Satan.

Exalting nature above nature's Creator was devised as an ingenious way to win souls away from the living God, away from truth and religion, disguising the thorns of error, skepticism, and infidelity with the garments of philosophy and science. Those not enlightened by God's Word who view discoveries in art and science from a merely human standpoint become bewildered and lost and come to wrong conclusions, concluding Bible history unreliable because they cannot explain God's works and ways from natural causes. They exclude God from the exercise of sovereign will and power in the established order of the universe, will not admit His miraculous power, demean man the noblest of His creatures and destroy his dignity, and teach by theory and speculation that man has come by slow degrees from a savage state and from the very lowest form of the brute creation.

Turning God's truth into a lie is the work of the father of lies, and the belief that the present age represents real progress in human knowledge, despite the greater strength and knowledge of people before the Flood, is a delusion shaped by that work. Turning from divine truth into vain philosophy leads to questioning and finally disbelieving God and divine revelation, as Satan makes sin attractive and thereby leads to transgression of God's law. Teaching that God is in the flower, in the leaf, in the tree puts the creature in the place of the Creator, and once God is located in created things the plain next step is to give those things the honor due to God alone. Its beautiful pictures especially delight young people while even long-taught believers are blinded to the danger, and taking the works of God and making them to be God is a fearful misrepresentation by those who do not know God nor Jesus Christ sent to save sinners, whose course they do not understand and which must be opposed.

Worshiping nature, the works of the divine hand in granite rocks, mountains, valleys, trees, grass, buds and flowers, is worshiping the creature above the Creator, yet even that worship strikes the senses as more sensible than worshiping images bearing the mold of finite man and shrines of dead men. All these things are God's house built for man and bear unmistakable tokens of the great Architect's matchless power, love, and laws to govern nature that lie at the foundation of all government in heaven and earth, meant day by day to call the mind to the Creator of heaven and earth and to awaken gratitude. The heart that needs images of man to worship is thankless, dull and ungrateful, and if these rich tokens do not lead it to God, images never will. People likewise turn from honoring the Creator when they devote affections to created things and treat them as objects of worship, as in admiring paintings and artistic skill while forgetting the Maker whose creation supplies their designs, since even the finest art is only an imperfect copy of nature and turning from nature's beauty to worship art diverts the mind from God.

People are prone to turn from God and give the Creator's glory to created beings, but God alone is to receive glory and exaltation, for human beings are only weak instruments whose victories and good works come from God. God's record of human history resists this tendency by ascribing glory for human victories and good works to God alone, showing people as weak instruments and keeping them from taking the Creator's honor. Serving the creature more than the Creator includes worshiping a wife before God when a husband regards her as the supreme object of thought and affection, heeds her every suggestion, and yields to every impulse of her uncontrolled nature. Making the creature instead of the Creator the god worshiped happens when the affections purchased by Christ's own blood are trifled with and perverted by placing them upon unworthy objects and centering them upon human beings instead of having them purified, ennobled and refined to twine about Creator and Redeemer.

Worshiping and serving the creature more than the Creator includes indulging appetite and debased passion through stimulants instead of holding them under the control of reason, which sacrifices reason, dishonors a man's own body and God's cause, and lowers him to the level of the beast. It comes from letting go of hold upon God and acting in independence, self-confidence and selfishness, yet God has not wholly left the one who does this. It means serving self instead of God by following feeling and inclination rather than reason and conscience, indulging passion and appetite to the injury of physical and moral strength, living for temporal interest and personal pleasure while disregarding religion, disregarding God, neglecting the influence owed to fellow beings, dishonoring God who gave human propensities for high and holy purposes, and debasing the moral, nobler, higher powers by burying God-given ability in the earth.

Idolizing human power and wisdom in healing by crediting doctors or medicines with recovery while ignoring God is serving the creature rather than the Creator, giving created beings the honor and trust belonging to God. It describes those unwilling to put forth effort to learn the laws of life and the simple means for restoration of health, who do not place themselves in right relation to life, for when sickness results from transgression of natural law, instead of correcting errors and then asking God's blessing they resort to physicians, and if they recover they idolize human power and wisdom, seeming to know no other god than the creature, dust and ashes. Devoting Christmas to gluttony and self-indulgence likewise exalts created things above the Creator, whereas the day should honor God with gratitude and generous gifts in remembrance of Christ's sacrifice.

Corrupting Truth into Falsehood

Many families whose names stand on the church record claim to be sons and daughters of God yet change His truth into a lie by holding it as supposed belief while denying it in works and home life. Their mere knowledge does not cleanse from iniquity because they leave out sanctifying grace in the home and neglect the solemn work of fathers and mothers to live true conversion before the family. They fail in accountability as faithful, exemplary laborers together with God in obedience to truth in righteousness, and must awaken to neglected responsibilities, seek the Lord, and be cleansed from all iniquity.

Ministers change God's truth to suit the prejudices, opinions and tastes of world-loving members, which is departure from the truth. A professed Christian, and especially a teacher of children and youth, turns the truth into a lie before others by an unsanctified heart and temper and a selfish, impatient, unchristlike spirit. Such a spirit declares by conduct that the grace of Christ is not sufficient at all times and in all places and in every circumstance. When Christ is formed within, the truth acts with transforming power upon the natural temperament, the character is changed, and God's authority is shown in reality and truth instead of in name only.

Ministers also turn truth into a lie by teaching that sinners will have another season of probation and repentance after Christ's advent, deceiving sinners and giving careless believers false security when probation has ended and mercy is no longer offered. Changing truth into a lie further includes heeding the false science of the enemy and then denouncing true prophetic reproof and warning as that of a false prophet. It includes placing false, twisted, wrong interpretations on testimonies and messages that uncover concealed wrongs, making improper use of messages given to the church, misconstruing them, refusing to listen to counsel and correction, refusing to correct the course and do the appointed work, and thereby confusing many minds as Satan stirs to action even those once used by the Lord.

Turning truth into a lie includes perverting truth for gain, and requires instead refusing to distort truth for selfish advantage and handling it wisely and carefully without haste under God's Spirit of grace, wisdom and sound judgment as a wise counselor and helper in His work. It also includes deception in bartering and buying and selling, overreaching in trade, and profiting at another's expense, contrary to the God of truth whose work from beginning to end sets forth eternal principles of truth. Safety is only in truth received into the heart and carried out in the life, valuing God's abiding presence more than scheming devices, studying His character and living His law, when truth and holiness have been almost blotted from the world. Truth is put to torture and turned into a lie by forced, mystical constructions upon the Word, showing danger and need of the touch of the divine Spirit in the heart. When the Spirit touches the heart the message for this time becomes the burden without searching for human tests or for something new and strange, for the Sabbath of the fourth commandment is the test for this time and all connected with this great memorial is to be kept before the people.

People dishonestly distort God's truth and turn it into a lie through fallacious and inconsistent courses and wicked babbling to serve their own interests and please the author of all evil, with pride of heart letting such influence win to hold one on the point of deciding for truth. Defending truth may involve exposing this dishonesty, but taking position to investigate and expose all such men lets Satan stir up opponents to keep pens constantly employed in answering objections while other branches suffer and voices are silenced from the most important work for the present time, so precious time is not to be consumed in that way. Joining those who turn truth into a lie means opposing the truth, joining hands with its opposers, strengthening sinners and the hands of sinners against God's counsel, and setting His counsel against one's own soul. It is warring ignorantly against what one does not know while blinded by Satan and driven by a proud heart wounded by slight, without growth in spirituality and devotion, without witness that the ways please God, and with zeal without knowledge, whereas faithful servants searched for truth amid such opposition and their labor benefited the world.

Rejecting God's truth and authority as a lie breaks confidence and heartfelt fellowship with those who faithfully serve God, because thoughts and loyalties about God, truth and eternity are opposed. It marks the contrast between serving God and being governed by worldly values, exchanging truth for a lie, disregarding divine authority, and giving worship and service to created things instead of the Creator. Deceptive teaching that turns truth into a lie now meets people on every side, brought by Satan through unsanctified people with deceptive human inventions, while God has given His Word so none need walk in darkness or leave duty to God and to one another in uncertainty. Standing requires being obedient Bible readers who settle every question by the law and the testimony however inconvenient, asking from the heart what is truth, receiving the heavenly anointing, and letting the Holy Spirit alone enable distinguishing truth from error and sin from righteousness, with assurance that the light of those who seek truth as hidden treasure will shine more and more unto the perfect day.

In the perils of the last days those who resist evidences of truth for fallacies turn truth into falsehood, and precious time is not to be devoted to trying to convince them. God's people are instead to stand on the platform of truth as given in the third angel's message, hold fast the evidences that have confirmed the truth in righteousness, proclaim those evidences over and over with a straightforward, clear-cut message until the close of earth's history, while Satan works miracles and presents pleasant pictures to confirm minds in the belief that he is God in order to deceive even the elect if possible. Living and teaching in a spiritual atmosphere poisoned with skepticism and falsehood produces, after evidence of truth, a subtle long-continued influence toward distorted representation and false coloring, where falsehoods about God's Word and work are reported as truth. Those who do this are not fit teachers of youth, students preparing for future immortal life must not stay or remain where this rules, those seeking heaven must keep truth pure, and none who turn God's truth into falsehood can enter heaven, being shut out thereby. Those who turn from truth, purity and holiness strengthen Satan's temptations and become tempters leading one another away from God, and those instructed from youth have no excuse for irreligion. Unless thoroughly converted they grow weaker and still weaker in moral power until the Spirit leaves them to carry out self-will to ruin, with escape only by greatly humbling the soul at the foot of the cross, learning meekness and lowliness of heart, and having genuine godliness woven into character as a light in the world.

Consequences of Rejecting Truth

To reject God's truth is to reject God Himself, exchanging truth for falsehood and turning worship to created things. That idolatry is broader than bowing to images, for it includes replacing the true God with false ideas about His character and deifying nature instead of worshiping its Creator. This same idolatry exists in the Christian world as it did in ancient Israel in Elijah's day. Rejecting truth leads to accepting deception and giving the self to sinful desires and lust, and such sins bring judgment upon the heathen.

When God's precepts and government are rejected, Satan's delusions are accepted, sin no longer appears sinful and righteousness no longer appears desirable. Those who refuse God's rule become unfit to govern themselves, and teaching that fosters insubordination helps produce a lawless and licentious society. The sins of that society are of the same kind that brought judgments upon the heathen.

Rejecting truth and worshiping what is created rather than the Creator removes people from God's protection and leaves them exposed to Satan's control. God bears long with sinners and grants opportunity for repentance, but when mercy is persistently rejected and the Spirit resisted, His restraint is withdrawn and they reap the destructive results of their own choices. When parents or rulers neglect the duty of punishing iniquity, He Himself takes the case in hand by in measure removing His restraining power from agencies of evil and permitting events to take their natural course, so that a train of circumstances arises in which sin is punished by sin. So it was when David unfaithfully failed to punish Amnon and Amnon continued two years in impenitence, and God did not restrain Absalom; the impenitent who continues in sin through granted time is at last cut down with guilt upon him to await the tribunal of the Judgment.

Persistently rejecting God's warnings and invitations brings abandonment to blindness and its consequences. Those who would not heed the light they had received nor reform from selfishness and other sins are given over to their own ways and left to follow their own desires. When a man disregards light about an improper association and keeps society that does not help his morals nor strengthen his spirituality, he places himself in the way of temptation and God leaves him to follow the carnal promptings of his own mind. In that abandonment Satan secures such souls under his control unto ruin.

This is Satan's working, whose hatred of the principles of God's law and enmity against Christ is carried out against Christ's followers. He works by deception that makes error appear as truth, substituting human laws for the law of God and turning men to give to the creature the worship and service belonging to the Creator alone. With this he misrepresents the character of God to cause men to fear and hate Him rather than love Him, sets aside the divine law to lead men to think themselves free from its requirements, and persecutes those who resist the deception. The same policy runs through all the history of the past, seen in patriarchs, prophets, apostles, martyrs and reformers.

To turn from the principles of truth while knowing the contrary is to contend in blindness of mind against God and His truth and His messengers, walking contrary to truth and greatly dishonoring God. Those who have had opportunity to know the truth and have received great light and peculiar advantages and gifts from God become fools in His sight when they turn from God's way to their own way and exchange His truth for falsehood. In perversity they lead others astray, fail to let their light shine, and fail to do the good they might have done. God does not decide destiny by position, color, or poverty but by character formed, judging according to work and calling to account for misused opportunities, with punishment proportionate to light, opportunities and mercies received and conspicuous for those distinguished above others by mercy and grace, so that all may see that He is a God of justice and His ways are equal.

Faithfulness in Response

Romans 1 belongs as a whole to be read and weighed and grasped in its particular meaning and given in its full force, standing with the warning that the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men and women who hold the truth in unrighteousness. In that light ministers who preach the Word must be sanctified through belief of the truth, a thorough work must be done in the churches, and every family must be converted. Many families with names on the church record claim to be sons and daughters of God yet fail in accountability as faithful, exemplary believers and laborers together with God, changing the truth into a lie by holding it as supposed belief while denying it in works and failing to obey it in righteousness in the home life. Mere knowledge of the truth does not cleanse from every species of iniquity when sanctifying grace is left out of the home and fathers and mothers neglect the solemn work of living true conversion before the family, so they must seek the Lord, awaken to neglected responsibilities, and become cleansed from all iniquity.

Those who defend biblical truth must not take a position of investigating and exposing every dishonest man who distorts truth into falsehood by a fallacious and inconsistent course, for Satan will then stir up opponents enough to keep pens constantly employed in answering objections while other branches of the work suffer and voices are silenced from the most important work for the present time. Precious time is not to be devoted to trying to convince those in the perils of the last days who have resisted evidences of truth for fallacies and turn truth into falsehood. God's people are instead to stand on the platform of truth as given in the third angel's message, hold fast the evidences that have confirmed the truth in righteousness, and proclaim those evidences over and over with a straightforward, clear-cut message until the close of earth's history. This steadfastness is needed while Satan works miracles to confirm minds in the belief that he is God and presents pleasant pictures and miracles in order to deceive even the elect if possible.

Taking the works of God and making them to be God is a fearful misrepresentation that turns His truth into falsehood and gives to created things the place and service belonging to the Creator alone. Those who hold such pantheistic teaching locating God in created things do not know God nor Jesus Christ whom He sent to save sinners, and do not know where their course is leading, so the teaching must be opposed.

Turning the truth into falsehood shuts a person out of heaven, for none who do so can enter there. Living and teaching in a spiritual atmosphere poisoned with skepticism and falsehood, after having evidence of truth a subtle, long-continued influence leads to distorted representation and false coloring of the truth, with falsehoods about the Word and work of God reported as truth. Those who do this are not fit to be teachers of youth, and students preparing for future immortal life and seeking heaven must not stay or remain where this is done nor be taught by such teachers. Turning truth into a lie includes perverting it for gain, so truth must not be distorted for selfish advantage but handled wisely and carefully without haste under God's Spirit of grace, wisdom and sound judgment as a wise counselor and helper in God's work.
