Romans 10:6
But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? ( that is, to bring Christ down from above:) But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? ( that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
The righteousness which is of faith does not ask anyone to climb to heaven to fetch Christ down, nor does it make salvation depend on hard journeys, costly pilgrimages, hardship, impossible tasks, or any human effort to reach Him. No pilgrimage needs to be undertaken and no impossible deed performed in order to bring Christ near, for the word of faith is already near, in the mouth and in the heart. Humble seekers do not have to accomplish an impossible journey or make Christ present by their own doing, because Christ and God are already near, present, and accessible.
Salvation is offered freely and without price to those who believe in the heart that God raised Jesus from the dead and confess Him with the mouth as Lord. That saving faith is more than intellectual agreement, for it trusts Christ personally as personal Savior and only hope of salvation. It places the affections on Him, accepts the terms of salvation, does His word, and walks in obedience and fellowship with Him, working through love to shape character after the divine likeness.
Drawing near to God is not a bodily movement nor a violent effort of the mind, but a submitting of the human will to His wisdom and a meeting with Him through Christ's atoning sacrifice. Christ's death supplies the ground of reconciliation, so that those who come are welcomed, reconciled to His will, given power to become God's children, and covered with Christ's righteousness. A sinner may come to Christ simply and humbly, in faith and contrition, trusting His promise of salvation. When the sinner consents to give up sin and acknowledges guilt, the barrier between the soul and the Saviour is removed, and Christ who waits at the door of the heart enters.
This nearness meets thirsting souls who look elsewhere for life while Christ the living fountain and Messiah is close at hand. It also belongs to daily life, where faith meets Christ as a present help in ordinary places. Jesus stands by the believer's side to be walked with and spoken with, ready to give sympathy and help through sorrow, trials, and moral darkness.
