Romans 11:36

For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

All things originate from God and come from Him, they exist and are sustained and accomplished through Him, and they belong to Him and exist for Him and are directed to Him, so glory belongs to Him forever. It is praise for the depth of the riches of His wisdom and knowledge, whose judgments cannot be searched out and whose ways cannot be traced, since no one has known His mind, no one has been His counselor, and no one has first given to Him so that repayment is owed. He is the eternal, immortal, invisible King who alone has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, high above the heavens, and all things depend on Him and belong to Him. His greatness and works exceed human understanding, seen in perfect power, justice, and righteousness and in the wonders of nature that He guides and directs upon the earth for correction or for blessing, so that all people He has made may know Him. People own nothing of themselves and have received all from His liberality, so they owe all to Him and are to fear Him and give Him glory and trust Him as the One who takes away sin and gives righteousness. Finite and erring people cannot interpret Him or carry on discussion about Him, so silence before Him is eloquence and speech about Him must be careful, for He knows thoughts afar off and every word on the tongue.

Words and Chapter Context

All things originate and come from God, exist and are sustained and accomplished through Him, and belong to Him and exist for Him and are directed to Him, so that glory belongs to Him forever. He is the source and the means and the end of everything. The utterance is praise for the depth of the riches of His wisdom and knowledge, whose judgments are unsearchable and whose ways are past finding out and untraceable. No one has known the mind of the Lord, no one has been His counselor, and no one has first given to Him so that repayment is owed, for He knows all His works from the beginning.

That praise arises from His dealing with Israel and the Gentiles. Israel as a nation lost connection with God through unbelief and rejection of His purpose, while believing Gentiles as branches of a wild olive tree were grafted contrary to nature into the good olive tree to partake of its root and stand only by faith. The broken natural branches will be grafted into their own olive tree again if they do not remain in unbelief, for God is able to graft them in again. After blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in, all Israel shall be saved when the Deliverer comes out of Zion to turn away ungodliness from Jacob and take away sins. Concerning the gospel they are enemies for the Gentiles' sake but concerning election they are beloved for the fathers' sake, the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, and God has concluded them all in unbelief that He might have mercy upon all.

The verse belongs to the outline in Romans 11 of the work for the Jews, which is to be pursued with special wisdom and must not be ignored. His wisdom is to come to His people so that in wisdom and righteousness they clear the King's highway and give the Jews every opportunity to come to the light. It closes the eleventh chapter of Romans, which is to be read carefully and prayerfully. It leads directly into the appeal to present the body a living sacrifice and be transformed by the renewing of the mind to prove the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

God's Greatness and Human Response

All things are of God and through God and to God, and glory forever belongs to Him because He is the eternal, immortal, invisible King. He alone has immortality, dwelling in light which no one can approach, whom no one has seen nor can see, and to whom honor and everlasting power belong. He is in the height of heaven above the height of the stars, His armies are without number, His light rises upon all, and He does great things that cannot be comprehended. His supreme greatness and dread show that all things depend on Him and belong to Him.

His greatness and works exceed human understanding, revealing perfect power, justice, and righteousness that call people to fear Him and give Him glory. His mind and ways are beyond human comprehension, seen in His great works in nature that cannot be comprehended. Snow, rain, clouds, and lightning are spread abroad and turned about by His guidance to do whatever He commands and directs upon the earth. This is done whether for correction, for His land, or for blessing and loving-kindness, so that all people He has made may know Him.

The riches of His wisdom and knowledge are deep, His judgments cannot be searched out, His ways cannot be traced out, no one has known His mind, no one has counseled Him, and no one has first given to Him so that repayment is owed. Finite, erring people cannot interpret God and cannot carry on discussion about Him, so silence before Him is eloquence and speech about Him must be careful. This is because He understands thoughts afar off, is acquainted with all ways, and knows every word on the tongue. Those who speculate about God will meet their words when all things are brought to light and truth and falsehood are placed in sharp contrast, for He is all-wise and all-knowing and swiftly brings foolish human devisings to nothing.

All things originate from God, are sustained through Him, and exist for Him, and therefore all glory belongs to Him forever. People owe all to God, own nothing of themselves, and have received all from His liberality. His unsearchable wisdom and knowledge support trust in Him as the one who takes away sin and gives His righteousness.

It is the greatest honor to link up with Christ, to wear His yoke, to bear His burden, and to labor together with God as His field and His building. That labor means bringing right material into character building in view of the sacrifice of Him who was equal with God and became poor so that people through His poverty might be made rich. In the same spirit the verse is joined to prayer for strength, clear thought, and the Holy Spirit to serve God acceptably, affirming Him as the source of what is needed and the one to whom service and glory are due.
