Romans 11:9

And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:

The verse repeats David's prayer that the table of unbelieving Israel be turned into a snare and a trap and a stumblingblock and a recompense to them, with their eyes darkened so they cannot see. It adds that their backs are to be bowed down always. Their stumbling was not a fall beyond recovery, but through their fall salvation came to the Gentiles to provoke Israel to jealousy and emulation, that some of them might be saved.

Their fall became the riches of the world and their diminishing the riches of the Gentiles, and their fulness will be much greater riches; their casting away is the reconciling of the world, and their receiving will be life from the dead. If the firstfruit is holy the lump is holy, and if the root is holy so are the branches. Some of the natural branches were broken off because of unbelief, and the Gentiles as a wild olive tree were grafted in among them to partake of the root and fatness of the olive tree, standing only by faith.

Gentiles bear not the root but the root bears them. They must not boast against the branches nor despise the Jews nor be highminded, but fear and continue in God's goodness, lest God who spared not the natural branches also cut them off. Jews who abide not still in unbelief will be grafted into their own olive tree again, for God is able to graft them in.

Blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fulness of the Gentiles comes in, and then all Israel will be saved when the Deliverer comes out of Sion to turn ungodliness from Jacob and take away their sins under God's covenant. As concerning the gospel they are enemies for the Gentiles' sakes, but as touching election they are beloved for the fathers' sakes, for the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. The chapter to which the verse belongs outlines the work for the Jews.

That work must not be ignored but must be carried out with special wisdom, giving the Jews every opportunity to come to the light. It requires the wisdom of God to come upon His people and is done by clearing the King's highway in all wisdom and righteousness. It requires bringing present truth to Jews everywhere without despising them. Among the Jews the Lord has mighty men who will come to the light and proclaim the truth with power. They will proclaim the immutability of the law of God with wonderful power.
