Romans 15:16
That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost. That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.
By God's grace Christ's servant ministers the gospel so that the Gentiles may become an acceptable offering, made holy by the Holy Spirit. The verse teaches that believers are sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Sanctification is God's work in them, attained through His truth, and the Spirit's work is to guide them into all truth, which is God's Word.
Truth also means God's law, and by the Word and the Spirit the great principles of righteousness embodied in God's law are opened to people. A character formed by obedience to that holy law becomes holy and like Christ, and this is true Bible sanctification. God's law is holy and just and good, a transcript of divine perfection. Christ is the perfect example of such a character because He kept His Father's commandments and always did what pleased Him, so His followers are to become like Him by forming characters in harmony with the principles of the holy law.
This sanctifying work can be accomplished only through faith in Christ by the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The Spirit's sanctifying work continues after baptism, so those raised from the water are to live a new life, dead to sin and hidden with Christ in God, with their words, spirit, and character sanctified and shaped by the Spirit. Being sanctified by the Holy Spirit means having brain-power and the talent of speech sanctified, and only when these are sanctified is a person fitted for service.
