Romans 16:25
Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,
God is able to make believers stand firm through the good news and the proclamation of Jesus Christ. That good news unveils a purpose hidden in silence since the world began. It was not invented after humanity fell, but was settled in eternity when provision was made for rebellion and fall without making sin necessary, even covenanting to give the Son so believers might live forever. The secret includes that outsiders are now joint heirs with Israel, parts of one body sharing the promise in Christ through the gospel. What was hidden is now openly shown through the prophetic writings by order of the eternal God to all peoples so they may obey in faith.
Power to Establish Believers
God has power to establish believers according to the gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ. That stability comes from God alone through the gospel of Christ. This gospel is identified with the enduring power of the sacred Word, which must be taught always, at all times and in all places, because nothing else can take its place as truth against error.
The call to be established stands together with marking and avoiding those who cause divisions and offenses contrary to doctrine. Such dividers deceive the hearts of the simple by good words and fair speeches. Against them believers are to be wise toward what is good and simple concerning evil. And all is to end in giving glory forever through Jesus Christ to God only wise.
When the message of the verse is spoken with the power of the Holy Spirit, it brings conviction and conversion. It turns people from darkness to light. In doing so it strengthens them in faith.
Mystery Kept Secret Revealed
The gospel is the revelation of a mystery, a purpose kept secret since the world began and kept in silence through eternal times. That plan of redemption was not devised after Adam's fall, for from eternity God and Christ knew of Satan's rebellion and of humanity's fall and made provision for that crisis without ordaining that sin should exist. It unfolded principles that had always been the foundation of God's rule and included the covenant to give His Son so that believers could have everlasting life. The mystery is the hidden wisdom God ordained before the world unto human glory, not the wisdom of this world nor of its rulers that comes to nothing.
That hidden purpose embraces much concerning the love and goodness and compassion of God, far beyond strangely limited human ideas. Its central aim is to restore the image of God in the human soul, which is the central theme of Scripture. The mystery once kept secret is God's purpose that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs with Israel, members of the same body, and sharers in God's promise in Christ by the gospel. Though hid in God from the beginning of the world, the mystery lighted up the dark future as soon as humanity sinned in the gospel preached in Eden that the seed of the woman should bruise the serpent's head. At that same time Christ commenced His priesthood after the order of Melchizedek, so that the fallen order under the dominion of death was not left to become extinguished but was made prisoners of hope.
The unfolding of that mystery and the sad apostasy were watched with intense interest by the other worlds God had created. It engages the attention of Christ and angels and unfallen beings. None of the princes of this world knew the hidden wisdom, for had they known it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. The science of redemption is the highest field of study and will occupy the redeemed throughout endless ages. Yet many mysteries still remain unrevealed and require implicit faith and trust in God's moral government.
Making the Mystery Known
What was kept secret since the world began is now made manifest, and by the Scriptures of the prophets according to the command of the eternal God is made known to all nations for the obedience of faith. The revealing began with the promise given in Eden and continued through the prophets, and now includes warnings that must be heeded to escape the perils of the last days. The same hidden purpose kept in silence through eternal ages was given to Paul to fulfil and to make known to the Ephesians and to the Colossians, for Paul was given the ministry of making this mystery known among the Gentiles.
That revelation was given to Paul at the beginning of his gospel ministry as his special commission to enter the broad missionary field of the Gentile world. To prepare him for that extensive and difficult work God brought him into close connection with Himself and opened before his enraptured vision glimpses of the beauty and glory of heaven. The revelation of Christ the Crucified changed Paul's life and led him to this ministry.
The mystery is known by experimental knowledge of Jesus Christ in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that faith stands in the power of God and not in enticing words of human wisdom or in fear of offending Jews and learned heathen. In Christ God gives wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, choosing the foolish and weak and base and despised things of the world to confound the wise and mighty so that no flesh should glory in His presence. Its precious things have not been opened to understanding because knowledge of spiritual things has become dwarfed and enfeebled by earthliness and commonness, with failure to advance from light to greater light, bringing loss that calls for humility.
