Romans 2:16

In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

In the day foretold God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to the gospel, with Jesus Himself as both judge and lawgiver. That judgment looks not on outward appearance but on the heart, with no respect of persons, for His eye sees every act, plan, thought and motive with no veil able to hide them, and every deed is weighed by the motive behind it. The standard in that judgment is God's law as a transcript of His character, the ten commandments by which character is measured, so that doers of the law and not mere hearers are declared just, through obedience rendered by faith. Each soul is judged by the light of God's will allowed to reach him and by faithfulness to that light, so that both those who sinned without law and those who sinned in the law are held accountable without favoritism. This judging of secrets is the closing work of Christ's intercession until probation closes, therefore all must prepare by confessing and forsaking sin and keeping God's law through faith, while leaving all judgment of character to Christ and refusing to measure or condemn fellow believers.

Secrets Judged by Christ

In the day foretold God judges the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to the gospel, with Jesus as both judge and lawgiver. That judgment searches the heart rather than outward appearance, with no respect of persons, holding accountable both those who sinned without law and those who sinned in the law. His eye sees every action, scheme, plan, purpose, thought and motive, searching out every hidden thing so that no veil can hide the inmost thoughts, and every act is weighed by the motive behind it. Outward respectability cannot conceal a cherished sin, for only what agrees with the principles of God's law will stand.

At the judgment there will be revelations when every secret, unconfessed sin is laid bare and secret thoughts and transactions are set in the light of God's countenance. Then men will realize how hateful their practice has been and to what use they have turned the talents given to be used for His name's glory. Then all the wicked will be convicted as they see that their actions came from depraved character and carried on the rebellion begun in the heavenly courts. They will see all the cruelty and wickedness that dishonored their Creator and brought about the wretchedness that fills the world, while obedience would have made character as fine gold, kept happiness and peace, borne fruit in sanctified love, and filled the world with holiness and purity.

Present testing and proving already exposes the secrets of the heart, just as affliction reveals what is false and what is genuine. God so tests and proves all people, including Catholics, just as He tests those who know present truth, measuring accountability by faithfulness to the light received and willingness to stand whatever testing comes. So many Catholics who live up to the light they have better than many who claim present truth will be accepted, and a great number will be saved.

The verse was brought home to Felix, who realized his secret crimes were known to God and that he would be judged according to his deeds. The conviction brought terror, but he dismissed it instead of repenting. Human destiny is determined under this judgment, for people pass away but will live again, and sin and transgression of God's law give the coming judgment its solemn significance and make the warning and light of truth needed.

Standard and Accountability

God's law is the standard in the judgment of secrets by Jesus Christ, and doers of the law and not mere hearers are declared just. That law is a transcript of His character, pointing out His justice and benevolence, by which every soul will be tried and measured. In the last great day the holy law of ten commandments, written on tables of stone by the finger of God and placed in the ark, will appear before the obedient and the disobedient as the standard of righteousness by which character approved by God is measured. Only what agrees with its principles will stand, for outward respectability cannot conceal cherished sin when every act is weighed by its motive. Obedience to God's commandments is necessary for worship to please Him, and faith is essential to obeying and keeping the law.

Each soul is judged by the knowledge of God's will and the light God has allowed to reach him, measured by faithfulness to that light and willingness to stand whatever testing comes. Sinners do not perish for want of opportunities, privileges, and means of knowing God's will, but for unwillingness to come out from the world, be separate from selfish practices, deal with justice and mercy, and do the works of a Christian. Those who turn from presented truth to their own way will reap as they have sown and will have no excuse to offer when every case stands out as it is. For this reason there is no simple yes-or-no answer about being lost for not keeping the Sabbath apart from the light given to that person.

God holds accountable both those who sinned without law and those who sinned in the law, without favoritism and without respect of persons. The judgment will reverse human estimation, so many now low in man's estimation will stand high in God's estimation, and those who have worked with integrity and diligence will be justly rewarded. Many Catholics who live up to the light they have better than many who claim present truth will be accepted, and a great number will be saved. Many standing aloof from Seventh-day Adventists are living more in accordance with their light than are many Adventists, so judging others who have not seen the light is foolish wisdom that coming demonstrations will expose. In the day of judgment human beings will stand ashamed and condemned because, though made the crowning object of creation and given intellect, reason, and power of speech, they would not obey God's law. That day makes clear and distinct the line of demarcation between the obedient and disobedient, between those who serve God and those who serve Him not.

Timing and Human Response

The judging of secrets is the closing work of Christ's ministry of intercession, which began in 1844 and continues until the cases of both the living and the dead are decided and human probation closes. In that judgment God judges hidden things and hidden deeds through Jesus Christ according to the gospel, with His law as the standard by which character is measured, declaring just not mere hearers but doers of the law. Faith is necessary to obey and keep that law and for worship to please Him.

Because all are living in the last days dealing with solemn realities, preparation must be made by keeping God's law through faith with diligent work for time and for eternity. Embittered minds toward one another and all unjust dealing must be put away, sins confessed, sin repented of and forsaken, with repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. Growth must go on from light to greater light and from faith to greater faith into a rich and deep experience, with all faculties brought from selfish purpose into God's service, the work of the inner man of the heart carried on, and the plowshare of truth going deep and thorough until truth has power over daily life and character. Obedience would have made character as fine gold and principles as the golden wedge of Ophir, keeping happiness and peace and bearing fruit in sanctified love and beauty of character, filling the world with holiness and purity. Young men in particular must therefore examine the course they pursue, the influence they exercise over one another, whether they build character with chaff or sow pure seed in the soil of the heart, and whether their associations lead to purity and to recognizing and obeying the law God has given.

Since the judgment searches the heart rather than outward appearance with no respect of persons, and since God alone knows the heart and judgment belongs to Christ as judge and lawgiver, no man is given the work of numbering Israel, putting human measurement upon ministering brethren, reading the heart, or making himself judge of character by measuring or condemning fellow believers. The one found fault with may be more righteous in God's sight. Judging others who have not seen the light is foolish wisdom that coming strange demonstrations will expose, for many standing aloof live more in accordance with the light they have received than do many who claim present truth.

Human destiny is determined under this judgment, people pass away but will live again, and sin and transgression of God's law give the coming judgment its solemn significance and make needed the warning and light of truth. That coming judgment gives urgency to warning others, for those in covenant to serve God must fear lest their lives fail to show the contrast between truth and error. In that day the line of demarcation will stand clear and distinct between the obedient and the disobedient, between those who serve God and those who serve Him not, while the lives of the righteous put to shame those who refuse allegiance to God.
