Romans 2:2

But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.

God's judgment against those who practice wrong is true, fair, impartial, and fully in line with truth. It falls on those who commit evil and such things, especially those who condemn others for the same wrongs they themselves commit. Anyone who judges and condemns another for wrongs he himself practices condemns himself and is inexcusable and without excuse. Such a person who judges others while doing the same things cannot expect to escape God's judgment.

The verse belongs to the warning not to despise the riches of God's goodness, forbearance and longsuffering, for the goodness of God leads to repentance. Hardness and impenitent heart treasures up wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, when He will render to every person according to deeds. To those who by patient continuance in well-doing seek glory, honor and immortality and work good He gives eternal life and glory, honor and peace, to the Jew first and also to the Gentile. To those who are contentious and do not obey the truth but obey unrighteousness and do evil come indignation, wrath, tribulation and anguish upon every soul, to the Jew first and also to the Gentile, for there is no respect of persons with God. The eternal life He gives is a life that runs parallel with the life of Jehovah.

Judgment has been given to Christ alone, because He lived humanity and He alone understands human weakness and human striving to attain Christian perfection, so no person has the right to measure and condemn the character of fellow church members. Even though there are counterfeit Christians in every church, the wheat and the tares must grow together until the harvest, because the church militant today is not the church triumphant and the work of judgment and separation has not been committed to men. Seeing faults in church members therefore gives no one reason to refuse to be a Christian. Readiness to see failings in others and in brethren and to pass judgment on them reveals distrusted principles, lack in one's own experience, and a condemning conscience that makes one keenly alive to the failings of others and suspicious of brethren. The one who condemns a brother is guilty of the same sin and adds conceit and censoriousness, making the judging spirit a greater sin than the fault criticized.

Instead of finding fault with others, each must tremble and be afraid for self, see that his own heart is right with God, faithfully weed his own garden until he has no time for the gardens of others and to find fault with them, judge himself, and make sure he is elect through sanctification of the Spirit unto obedience and purified love of the brethren, with a soul purified by obeying the truth so as to love the brethren fervently with a pure heart. The verse warns against judging others because each person's life record will soon pass in review before God. It applies to those who unsparingly condemn another for faulty financial management while knowing their own financial embarrassment is not after God's order. It means that God does not help men in transgression but visits iniquity upon them and punishes disregard of warning and reproof.

It applies to the Jewish people who betrayed their sacred trust and at Satan's instigation sinned in defiance of the law of God's kingdom through selfishness, self-exaltation and oppressive power. It applies also to the rulers in Christ's day whose selfish, money-loving, grasping and covetous example discouraged many, caused loss of the true sense of God and His commandments, and gave the Gentile world occasion to misinterpret God and the laws of His kingdom. This instruction condemns all who have had the truth laid before them yet continue the things condemned by the inspired record.
