Romans 2:28

For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:

A person is not made a true Jew by outward profession or status, by lineal descent from Abraham, or by a bodily rite in the flesh, and such outward circumcision by itself is not meaningful. A true Jew is one inwardly, and true circumcision is of the heart in the spirit and not in the letter, whose approval comes from God and not from men. That inward identity is shown by sincere obedience to God's law and a righteous life shaped by grace, which is worship in spirit and truth, distinct from hypocritical pretense, mere keeping of the letter, abundance of ceremonies, and added traditions and burdensome rites. Outward circumcision profits only when the law is kept, while breaking the law turns it into uncircumcision, and uncircumcised keeping of the righteousness of the law is counted as circumcision and condemns the transgressor, so those who know Bible truth but do not practice it are circumcised in profession but uncircumcised in practice. Acceptance with God has always been by inward heart obedience under both the former dispensation and the gospel, so the Israel of God are those who are converted rather than those who are Jews by birth, and with Christ there is no caste, for He receives all without partiality.

Inward Jew and Circumcision

No outward profession makes a person a Jew, and no outward status does so either. Lineal descent from Abraham does not make a person a Jew, nor does a bodily rite performed in the flesh make circumcision meaningful. Outward rite in the flesh and outward standing in the body cannot establish Jewish identity before God.

A true Jew is one inwardly, and true circumcision is of the heart in the spirit and not in the letter. Such praise is not from men but from God. This inward reality concerns the heart and the spirit rather than reliance on an outward sign.

Inward identity is shown by keeping the law rather than relying on its outward sign, by sincere obedience to God's law and a righteous life shaped by grace. It is inward worship in spirit and truth, not an outward form or ceremony performed with hypocritical pretense. Strict keeping of the letter of the law and an abundance of ceremonies do not make a person righteous. True obedience is distinct from the added traditions and burdensome rites of the elders.

Outward circumcision profits only if the law is kept, while breaking the law turns it into uncircumcision. Uncircumcision that keeps the righteousness of the law is counted for circumcision and judges the transgressor who has letter and circumcision yet breaks the law. Teaching others without teaching self, while stealing, committing adultery and sacrilege and breaking the law, dishonors God and causes His name to be blasphemed among the Gentiles. Those who know Bible truth but do not practice it and neglect faithful service to seek and save the lost are in reality among the uncircumcised and are left without the righteousness of Christ. Those with every privilege of knowing Bible truth who do not bring it into the inner sanctuary of the soul, who nominally accept truth without practicing it and refuse to put on the robe of Christ's righteousness, are professedly circumcised but uncircumcised in practice, and walking with the uncircumcised in covetousness places them among the uncircumcised to be destroyed with the uncircumcised and spared no more than the veriest sinner.

Jesus was a Jew who gave the perfect pattern of inward Jewish faithfulness. He rebuked pretentious piety and displays of piety, upheld God's law and taught obedience to its precepts, while freeing people from senseless religious demands. By contrast, outward piety that trusted in strict observance of religious forms concealed pride, hypocrisy, and avarice.

Covenant Unity and Faithful Living

The denial that outward descent or outward rite makes a true Jew proves that the Old and New Testament Scriptures do not contradict each other. True religion under the former dispensation was just as essential and thorough and full in its requirements as under the gospel when Christ became minister of the better covenant. Christ was the originator and foundation of the Jewish ceremonies and Moses was the administrator, with type meeting antitype in the death of Christ, so acceptance with God was always by inward heart obedience. In every nation the one who fears God and works righteousness is accepted with Him.

The Israel of God are those who are converted, not those who are Jews by birth. Outward descent from Abraham and outward privilege do not make anyone a true Jew or an heir of the promises claimed on the ground of descent from Abraham, even when clothed in garments of self-righteousness. True Jewish identity is shown in the heart and in a righteous life shaped by grace, not by descent and bodily circumcision alone. Outward observance of the ceremonial law does not make one nearer to God, and circumcision is not required for Gentiles to enter Christ's church.

The Jewish nation received light concerning the kingdom of God, the oracles of God, and clear truth to impart to those in darkness. Instead of feeling need and obligation to share it, they became self-complacent and boasted that they alone were God's favored people and more exalted than their neighbors. When heart and mind and strength are used to exalt and favor self, all claims to superior wisdom and to be children of God are as nothingness in His sight. Hearts not given to God are not clean but full of selfishness, impurity, pride, and deceit, and outward Jewish identity and outward circumcision have no value with God apart from a heart, mind, and strength devoted to Him.

There is no caste with Christ, who with marvelous condescension receives all who come to Him graciously without prejudice or partiality, rich or poor, white or black. Being a Jew is inward and circumcision is of the heart in the spirit, with praise not from men but from God. Ministers and physicians and all who have received the light of present truth are to contemplate this redeeming love and show the same impartial, unprejudiced reception of all.

No one is given the work of numbering Israel or putting human measurement upon ministering brethren by appearances. The heart cannot be read, and the one found fault with may be more righteous in the sight of God. God has no respect of persons, and in the day when He judges the secrets of men by Jesus Christ He justifies not hearers of the law but doers. Amid the perils of the last days each is to take heed to self, to crucify hasty temper, impatience, and hasty speech, to be careful how a brother is measured, and to put no occasion of stumbling in a brother's way.

Nominal profession without faithful service to seek and save the lost leaves a person without the righteousness of Christ. Outward circumcision and nominal profession of truth do not make a person truly faithful, for those who know Bible truth but do not practice it are in reality among the uncircumcised. Those who have every privilege of knowing Bible truth yet do not bring it into the inner sanctuary of the soul, who nominally accept the truth but refuse to put on the robe of Christ's righteousness, are professedly circumcised but uncircumcised in practice. Walking with the uncircumcised in covetousness places them among the uncircumcised, and though circumcised they will be found as the circumcised among the uncircumcised and punished and destroyed with the uncircumcised, spared no more than the veriest sinner.
