There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
By nature fallen humanity on its own does not understand spiritual truth and does not seek after God. No one by nature understands spiritual things, and people in their sinful condition neither understand nor seek God.
The verse belongs to a larger description of universal unrighteousness in which there is none righteous and none doing good. That condition includes corrupt and deceitful speech, with a throat like an open grave, tongues using deceit, and poison under the lips. It includes going out of the way and becoming unprofitable and doing no good, with ways of destruction and misery without peace, and with no fear of God before the eyes.
That unrighteous condition portrays the present condition of the world and the church today. This universal failure to understand and seek God has been brought about by making void the law of God.
People do not find salvation by seeking God first; salvation begins with God seeking sinners. Repentance does not earn God's love and favor, but God reveals His love to sinners so that they may repent.
Estrangement from God shows this condition in practice through evil and mutual hostility and refusal to heed warning. It is seen where evil is cherished, where people go astray and forsake God, and where envy, hatred, jealousy, strife and bitterness are borne. It is seen where warning and reproof are refused and where there is refusal to turn back to God for healing.
The verse warns students at the school at Avondale that although Christ gave His own life to purchase their freedom from slavery to sin, they dishonor Him by words and riotous actions and show they do not understand and do not seek God. It stands as a heavenly record of what could be said of them if they continue in cheap common talk, disorder and impropriety. So continuing would join lack of righteousness, going out of the way, becoming unprofitable, and doing no good, with a throat like an open grave, tongues using deceit, and poison under the lips, and with no fear of God before the eyes. Such a course gives the Lord no pleasure and brings no real satisfaction to themselves.
No person is good in himself and no one is as good as he ought to be, so a person should refuse praise from others and humbly admit his own lack.
